It will take you by surprise

What made the experience of listening to Mr Loverman the most enjoyable?

The book is beautifully written, as one would expect from Ms Evaristo. This is the story of secret love, told in such an engaging style, with such beautifully drawn characters you can't help but be fully engaged in what is such a sad tale. It had me laughing out loud in places, and near to tears in others. The book is a joy.

Any additional comments?

The performance of James Goode was stellar. He brought authenticity to the characters, and read so beautifully I want to hear more from him. He was the perfect choice to read such a wonderful novel.

WEST INDIAN AS RICE AND PEAS

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book was recommended to me and I would definitely recommend it to others. It is a great story about two elderly Caribbean males. A demographic we rarely hear from or read about.

What other book might you compare Mr Loverman to, and why?

Of the books I have read and listened to, including those written by Caribbean writers, I can think of none that compare.

What does James Goode bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

James Goode's narration was excellent. Narration makes or breaks an audio book. These accents sounded authentic.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me laugh and cry. This is a story of bittersweet relationships. Between the central characters and lovers Barrington and Morris and Barrington and his wife, Carmel.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book very much but found that the English classical education references (Greek mythology etc) jarred and seemed to be more about the author than the character.

Brillant

What did you like most about Mr Loverman?

I loved this audiobook and a big part of it was the narration. He brought the characters alive and I was engrossed. At the end I felt as if I had lost a friend.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr Loverman of course

What does James Goode bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I don't know what it would have been like reading the story compared to listening to it but I worry that I would have missed some of the tenderness and humour.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nearly but wanted to spin it out and enjoy it more.

Wow.

Not many can write a sexy scene set in an office with a fffax machine, masculine stapler and heavy-duty ribbed carpet - but Evaristo can and Goode reads it with gusto.
Excellent.

Wonderful!

You can't fault this audible story - brilliantly written (so much so, I had to buy the book at savor it in print and am so glad I did, because visually it's so exciting ...)
And superbly read by James Goode. Poignant, real and so funny in parts. A wonderful surprise listen.

A Gem

A surprisingly bright and engaging novel, that comes across as though it were an unusually revealing and perceptive autobiography. I only came across it by chance, and took a gamble on it, hoping that it would be worthwhile, not knowing anything about the author or its content.
I clearly won big time on this occasion. The story is very much more expansive than at first appears, and although it covers a relatively small canvas, it is full of the most felicitous musings and penetrating comments by its narrator that turn the whole thing into a moving and memorable experience. It is very much a character study of an immigrant from Antigua made good in the UK, who masterfully describes his present circumstances, past life, his disastrous marriage and the thorny subject of his abiding gay relationship with Maurice.
What makes this audiobook absolutely unforgettable is the masterful, incredible performance of the reader. It is not so much read, as performed, - and what a tour de force it is. This is real Oscar worthy stuff, the likes of which I have rarely heard.
As I say in the heading, this is a gem: a real treat.

Stick with it..

This audiobook grew on me, so stick with it. I really enjoyed it in the end, but admit that towards the beginning I was going to give up.

This book is about the relationship between the two older Caribbean men. I choose the book because of the storyline and was not disappointed.

Hang in there.
