Publisher's Summary

Happily ever after is easier said than done....

Sarah Matamoros can’t complain. After immigrating from Mexico when she was nine years old, she’s content with the life she’s made for herself in sunny San Diego. She works hard at her mother’s housecleaning service by day and spends the evenings with her quirky eight-year-old daughter, Grace.

From a very young age, Emory Owen had several concepts drilled into her head. Success is everything. Be the best. Fight your way to the top. Expectations were high in the Owen household and the world was watching. Born into a high society family, Emory never wanted for anything...at least anything money could buy. When she meets Sarah, hired to sort her mother’s home, her sterile life suddenly sparks into color.

But when the emotional logistics of combining two very different worlds proves to be too much, a terrifying turn of events spurs the question: If love exists, can it really find a way?

Good Listen

With the exceptions of some over reliance on cliches and a senseless breakup which seemed quite contrived I liked it. Even with a slight man bad; woman good attitude this was a nice listen. It made six hours of landscaping go by almost quickly. Even for guys I can recommend this book. It was a pleasant experience if you can overlook some of the obvious faults. The four stars were earned.

Sweet Story, Witty Writing & Fantastic Narration

What I loved about Heart Block was the combination of great writing and the way the narrator captured the spirit of the characters. This story was sweet without too much drama which I generally prefer for romance novels. This is definitely a story I will listen to many times.

I loved the story

The story itself was really good. there was a few moments the dialog was kinda cheesy but it made me smile so who doesn't like cheese.lol
the narration was great first time EVER there was a Hispanic leading role where the narration was able to portray the actual Acsent correctly. so that alone was amazing.
She dis have issues with the male characters.
I also wish the resolution happened a few chapters sooner so we could enjoy it more.
all in all it was a great book I loves it and will definitely recommend it to everyone.

Classic (and witty) Brayden

I listened to this one over the course of a couple of days while my foot was iced, elevated, and compressed. Happily, 'Heart Block' was the perfect antidote to a completely frustrating and boring two days of "sorry, we're waiting on your X-rays" and made what would have otherwise been a wretched time tolerable.

Here's the basics: you've got Sarah, who is a single mom dealing with the worst moment ever: her kid collapsed in a dead faint, and there's something awry with her heart. Second, you've got Emory, an upper-class daughter from a socialite background who has worked her butt off to be a successful CEO and is a high-powered mover and shaker (never mind that her family never sees her that way). She's also dealing with her own awful moment: her mother has had a stroke, and is brain dead.

When Emory hires someone to clear out her childhood home, it's Sarah who shows up. Sarah's mother runs a family cleaning/organizing business, and the two might get off on the wrong foot, but it's not long before sparks fly. But they're from very different worlds with very different expectations of what they want from life, love, and family.

Brayden brings her game here, and pulls all the heartstrings (no pun intended), especially those of family, mothers-and-daughters especially, and what it means when your feelings aren't lining up with your expectations.

A wonderful audio narrator made this one a truly enjoyable book.

However, the narrator made it painful and frustrating for me to listen to...Other than that, the story rocks!

Sweet and predicetable!

A cute, gentle novel, but wish it had more depth to the story. Brayden is the Queen of lightweighted lesbian romantic content.

Heart Block

Melissa Brayden is such a talented writer. Her books really hook you in! This was a really good book! The storyline was well written. The narration was on point which added to the listening experience! I also just appreciate that she takes the time to write an epilogue which helps with providing a wonderful ending. I am such a fan of hers I have listened to all of her books accept the one that the subject matter doesn't interest me. I will most likely however end up listening to that book and liking it do to her talented nature. I get so excited when she has a new book out that I pre-ordered the last one and was counting down the days until it became available! Melissa Brayden is one of my favorite authors! I hope you will continue to write such awesome books for many years to come!

Good sweet romantic story

Ms. Brayden writes great witty dialogue between the two main characters that bypasses traditional syrupy romance dialogue and provides very realistic and funny repartee that gives the relationship much more authenticity. Plus her characters are very real and honest although the child is a bit over precocious. I highly recommend it for a nice diversionary trip from traffic, work headaches, and domestic demands. The narration was good but the accents seemed a little heavy especially for a person who came to the country at an early age. It didn't really fit the author's description as a slight accent. Over, I recommend it and think you won't be disappointed!

Stick with it

I read Heart Block shortly after it was released and loved it. I love the story, the humor, and the characters. It's a great romance novel.

I was in the mood to experience the story again but needed my eyes for other things so I decided to purchase the audio book. Within the first 30 minutes I was certain I'd be returning it. I really didn't like the way the narrator handled the voices at all. As the book went on, however, she seemed to settle into the voices more and I was able to enjoy the story.

If you're a fan of lesbian romance books, stick with this one and I don't think you'll be sorry.

Cute quirky sweet love story

The story itself is not especially complicated or challenging, but it is an easy listen, very engaging and endearing. The dialogue fun and witty, the narrator Mia Chiaromonte brings out the characters and dialogue perfectly. The story itself I found a bit bland, and predictable, and I worried initially that it would not appeal to me but, the quirky nature of the story, the sweetness, dialogue and simple charms makes it well worth the listen.

Fabulous romance!

I have read this book a few times and it remains one of my favourites. I was delighted to find it in the audio format. The author has an ear for dialogue and the banter between the central characters is believable and engagingly endearing without becoming saccharine. It is an unashamed feel good romance but a refreshingly well written one with characters you soon find yourself rooting for. The narrator has a lovely light voice and reads it well. Definitely recommended for listening to while walking your dog on a beautiful autumn day while wrapped up warmly in a scarf and your best woolly bobble hat! Enjoy!

the warm mexican and the head strong american

What did you like most about Heart Block?

i liked how openly and easy the respective friends and family members accepted their relationship

What did you like best about this story?

the story was so loving and sweet especially Grace. the child was unexpected bold and understanding, she knew her mom was in love with Emory before her mom did.

What about Mia Chiaromonte’s performance did you like?

i loved her natural ways about her, she didn't let Emory's money or her doubt get the better of her, she went after what she wanted.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

headstrong meets homie and love

Any additional comments?

i was ready to cry when Grace ended up in the hospital because i was sure Sarah wouldn't called Emory and i knew Emory was the only person that could help Sarah through it. I was here praying to God not to let the child die. I was just ready to email the author and curse if she didn't know how a love story should end but she came through.

Just Fabulous!

What made the experience of listening to Heart Block the most enjoyable?

Listening to the narrator add personality and character to the stars of this audio was a pleasure. It made my listening most enjoyable, I could feel the rawness of their emotions just deep for you to partake in and it was so well depicted through the voice of the narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the outpouring of raw emotions. The passion, the subtle and realness of how love was presented.

Which character – as performed by Mia Chiaromonte – was your favourite?

Sara

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The most moving moment of the book for me was the first sexual encounter at the fire side wild the storm was raging outside. I believe the author was very clever in how she juxtapose the scenes. The warmth of the fire on the inside was just so contradictory to the raging storm that was taking place just a few steps away, yet it was so reflected of their inner emotions and passion, contained by their fear and their nervous, the ferocity of their emotions were masked. I just love this part of the book. I don't think anywhere in the rest of this book is there any imagery so real and appealing to the literary eye

Any additional comments?

The progression of the plot was just marvelous. The flow of the story and the development of the characters was well done.

A little gem found in a pile of rocks.

I saw the summary for this audio book, and honestly decided that it could easily be another cliched lesbian romance novel, full of two dimensional characters, sex, and not a lot else.

With that in mind I hit the little green sample button not really thinking it would draw me into trying out the book. One advantage of being a member of audible is the fact that you can return books if you find they aren't quite what you were expecting, and hearing the sample I decided it was worth the risk.

Boy I was wrong about my initial assessment based on the summary. Sure there are moments when it could come under those cliches, but actually, you get good three dimensional characters that you really care about. Even the part towards the end where you get the expected break-up before they come back together is done in a fashion that reflects the way the characters have developed and evolved. That's what makes the third dimension possible. The whole story was a very pleasant surprise. I'm not sure if this author has written more works, but if she has, then I would certainly be willing to read/listen to more based on this novel.

Added to that, the recording and narrator are far better than a lot of the lesbian audio books out there. The narrator does a reasonable job of separating out the characters, and there is no or little echo/reverberations that I have heard on some recordings and that frankly really helps this story along. Far too many recordings feel as though they have been rushed onto the audible catalog with little or no consideration to the quality of the engineering behind the work, even works by 'popular' authors have fallen into this trap. So it was a pleasant surprise to find a recording that falls into the more professional category.

Too many lesbian novels have fallen into the routine of the two dimension, which is sad because with a little thought they could be so much more. And so, within that pile of similar rocks that have fallen together, you do get the odd little gem popping up, and this is certainly one of those gems.

WONDERFUL EMOTION IN A ROMANCE

This author has a great ability to keep you involved in the emotion of Sarah and Emory. Its a girl romance but (i think) should appeal to anyone. There is no graphic sex like you can find in some romance, just the nice flowing tale of two people who should be together. The narrator is good after I had a slight hesitation to her style she really grows on you and the story works with her voices. If you like a nice romance story this is very much worth a credit.
