Publisher's Summary

A bold new plant-based plan that challenges popular keto and paleo diets, from an award-winning gastroenterologist.

The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases. And the scientifically proven way to fuel our guts is with dietary fiber from an abundant variety of colorful plants.

Forget about the fiber your grandmother used to take - the cutting-edge science on fiber is incredibly exciting. As Dr. B explains, fiber energizes our gut microbes to create powerhouse postbiotics called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are essential to our health. SCFAs are scientifically proven to promote weight loss, repair leaky gut, strengthen the microbiome, optimize the immune system, reduce food sensitivities, lower cholesterol, reverse type 2 diabetes, improve brain function, and even prevent cancer. Restrictive fad diets starve the gut of the critical fiber we need, weaken the microbes, and make our system vulnerable.

As a former junk-food junkie, Dr. B knows firsthand the power of fiber to dramatically transform our health. The good news is that our guts can be trained. Fiber-rich, real foods - with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes - start working quickly and maintain your long-term health, promote weight loss, and allow you to thrive and feel great from the inside out.

With a 28-day jump-start program with menus and more than 65 recipes, along with essential advice on food sensitivities, Fiber Fueled offers the blueprint to start turbocharging your gut for lifelong health today.

Includes a PDF of recipes and shopping lists.

Gut info is fantastic, vegan emphasis is not.

Dr. Bulsiewicz clearly knows what he is talking about when it comes to fiber and gut health. That information is worth the price of the book. I particularly enjoyed his de-bunking of the demonization of plant foods - grains, legumes, nightshades, etc. However, he then goes on to demonize all animal foods using the same types of limited and flawed arguments and studies that he unraveled on the plant side.
In summary, the gut health information is great. As far as whether a vegan diet is a good idea for most people, or even best for the environment - I would have liked to see a more balanced and well-researched treatment.

best book on nutrition since how not to die

I heard Dr. B on a plant based podcast and i just finished listening tothis book for the THIRD time. I'm a plant based nutrition fiend and this is the best book ive read since dr. Gregers how not to die, which changed my life, my partners life, and though we didn't know it at the time, our daughters life. this book gets into the mechanism behind how plant based eating improves health - the microbiome! dr. B is no Michael Greger.. the studies cited are not reviewed in detail, but clearly he is well read and leads with the studies. he gets an A from this research methods professor. I also loves the discussion about behavior change and growth mindset. and the best part is that this book encouraged me and my partner to cut out the processed junk from our vegan diet and reclaim the whole-foods in whole-foods-plant-based. can't wait to see how my kraut turns out! thanks dr. b.

Unnecessary information

This book could be a lot shorter. The author continues to use technical long words to increase the length of the book. The important information could be provided in less than two hours. The book Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski was much more comprehensive.

first science driven nutrition book i have read

I have struggled with gut health over the past year. I have listened to many nutrition books that claimed to be driven by science or human evolutionary history. Unfortunately many of these were filled with flawed logic and a poor understanding of general scientific consensus. This book was different. It was based on a thorough review of available scientific literature. The advice in this book has also been highly effective at improving my gut health and overall feeling of health. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Good introduction to the microbiome

Not a bad book, but I expected more from a doctor who is a specialist in this field. There's a fair bit of repetition and filler. Probably a good read for someone who doesn't really know anything about gut health, but it could do with a bit more substance. The audiobook I read just before this was Dr Michael Greger's How Not to Diet. This book seems a bit lightweight by comparison.

Mind blown

I’ve always known about the gut due to lots of intolerances I have and research I have made due to it over the years, but I didn’t know the information in this book. My mind is blown and I cannot wait to implement this information. THANK YOU SO MUCH! You have given me hope!

A MUST for anyone trying to understand the gut

Let me start with the writer's CV:

- Med school at Georgetown School of Medicine
- Trained in medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
- Trained in GASTROENTEROLOGY at The University of North Carolina Hospitals
- Got Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University
- Certificate in nutrition from Cornell University.
- Board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology

Given all the 'gurus', non medical doctors, influencers or even journalists online spreading their misinformation on gut health it was refreshing to see someone who is actually more than qualified to talk about it. Very thorough research, very well explained and from credible sources and studies. Definitely A MUST for anyone trying to understand the gut.

Solid- (don't be put off by Enthusiastic American)

I bought this Audio Book on Audible- as its instantly available- having seen Dr B on Dr Li's Eat to Beat Disease webnar.
Dr B is part of Zoe's (Dr Tim Spector "Spoon-Fed", Gut Biome- personalised nutrition) team, not yet available in UK.

Was initially put off taking the advice, as Dr B's narrator was just too enthusiastic for my British reserve, and 'Plant Based Diet' meant Vegan in this case. Listen to the book- I can see why its right for Dr B.
I did work through the pdf download, finding interesting new ingredients- The Biome Broth, is now my go-to vegetable stock.
I found the recipes did need a bit of translation- not just the obvious name changes- but what is the UK locally grown, seasonal, low foodmiles sustainably produced equivalent. I didn't follow the recipe plan- I have no health gut issues- and would prefer to work out the reasoning behind it and make my own UK based family meal plan [diversity of grains, pulses, fermented foods, seasonal local produce, homegrown salads in summer, sprouted seed in winter]

I have now gone back to listening to the book, paying particular attention to the fibre types, to enable me to achieve good gut diversity.

I do recommend this book, it does give a solution, on how to improve your gut. It is one you will keep going back to.

Amazing!

Confirmed what I knew about a whole food plant based diet but I had no idea about gut health. I’ve been WFPB since January this year and so far…migraines gone, back pain done, knees pretty much stopped clicking and lost 3 stones. I also practice time based eating which really helps with discipline and routine. The whole experience has been life changing!

Repetitive.

A lot of interesting information about the gut biome and it’s response to food but then this was just repeated in slightly different forms.
Lost me when the author reported taking supplements. If this is the best diet for health why are pills still needed?
Some of the ethical and environmental assertions around veganism don’t really stack up either.
It was ok, but could have been ⅓ the length.

Great book with heaps of insights

Great book with heaps of scientific data and insights. Really worth the time and while it is a little vegan focus there is so much you can take out of this even if you still like a nice steak at times.
