Publisher's summary

A bold new plant-based plan that challenges popular keto and paleo diets, from an award-winning gastroenterologist.

The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases. And the scientifically proven way to fuel our guts is with dietary fiber from an abundant variety of colorful plants.

Forget about the fiber your grandmother used to take - the cutting-edge science on fiber is incredibly exciting. As Dr. B explains, fiber energizes our gut microbes to create powerhouse postbiotics called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that are essential to our health. SCFAs are scientifically proven to promote weight loss, repair leaky gut, strengthen the microbiome, optimize the immune system, reduce food sensitivities, lower cholesterol, reverse type 2 diabetes, improve brain function, and even prevent cancer. Restrictive fad diets starve the gut of the critical fiber we need, weaken the microbes, and make our system vulnerable.

As a former junk-food junkie, Dr. B knows firsthand the power of fiber to dramatically transform our health. The good news is that our guts can be trained. Fiber-rich, real foods - with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes - start working quickly and maintain your long-term health, promote weight loss, and allow you to thrive and feel great from the inside out.

With a 28-day jump-start program with menus and more than 65 recipes, along with essential advice on food sensitivities, Fiber Fueled offers the blueprint to start turbocharging your gut for lifelong health today.

Includes a PDF of recipes and shopping lists.

Gut info is fantastic, vegan emphasis is not.

Dr. Bulsiewicz clearly knows what he is talking about when it comes to fiber and gut health. That information is worth the price of the book. I particularly enjoyed his de-bunking of the demonization of plant foods - grains, legumes, nightshades, etc. However, he then goes on to demonize all animal foods using the same types of limited and flawed arguments and studies that he unraveled on the plant side.
In summary, the gut health information is great. As far as whether a vegan diet is a good idea for most people, or even best for the environment - I would have liked to see a more balanced and well-researched treatment.

best book on nutrition since how not to die

I heard Dr. B on a plant based podcast and i just finished listening tothis book for the THIRD time. I'm a plant based nutrition fiend and this is the best book ive read since dr. Gregers how not to die, which changed my life, my partners life, and though we didn't know it at the time, our daughters life. this book gets into the mechanism behind how plant based eating improves health - the microbiome! dr. B is no Michael Greger.. the studies cited are not reviewed in detail, but clearly he is well read and leads with the studies. he gets an A from this research methods professor. I also loves the discussion about behavior change and growth mindset. and the best part is that this book encouraged me and my partner to cut out the processed junk from our vegan diet and reclaim the whole-foods in whole-foods-plant-based. can't wait to see how my kraut turns out! thanks dr. b.

Unnecessary information

This book could be a lot shorter. The author continues to use technical long words to increase the length of the book. The important information could be provided in less than two hours. The book Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski was much more comprehensive.

first science driven nutrition book i have read

I have struggled with gut health over the past year. I have listened to many nutrition books that claimed to be driven by science or human evolutionary history. Unfortunately many of these were filled with flawed logic and a poor understanding of general scientific consensus. This book was different. It was based on a thorough review of available scientific literature. The advice in this book has also been highly effective at improving my gut health and overall feeling of health. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Mixes awesome science with regrettable biases

I had to stop reading this when 90 percent of what he was saying was great and insightful, but the author would slip in little things that show an anti-technological preference.

When describing the problem of over prescribing antibiotics, he slipped in adding fluoride to drinking water to his list of grievances with health advancement. When he talked about rising obesity, he brought up increase of certain cancers from eating non organic. That is purely observational and you cannot claim, like he did, that the increase of incidence from those cancers comes from GMO crops or glyphosphate.

I understand the anger behind treating everything with a pill or being skeptical of herbicides. Those things legitimately scare me that we see those as the solutions. But don't bring in your biases and coat it with science and feed people a diet program to make them skinny and healthy.

I've take a class on the human Microbiome and it was my absolute favorite class. It was rife with new discovery and connections found within our own bodies. As a molecular biologist, I'm enthralled by that science.

However, I can't stand to have that wonderful scientific literature be framed in lense of a panacea diet program that will stop you from taking your prescribed pills.

Fiber is amazing and important! That's why I bought this book. But really the only diet advice you need for a healthy gut microbiome is eat lots of fiber in a diverse and fulfilling way for yourself.

Great Information. . Great Naration.

Usually I most enjoy the books that are read by the author. The narrator of this book was so enthusiastic in his reading that I felt like it was his story. Great information and advice for health seekers everywhere.

I FOUND THE PDF!

Great book! Nice energetic narrator and author explains things very well. I've started incorporating more plant-based fiber into my diet about a week ago and I already notice an improvement in the way I feel.

To everyone who was looking for the downloadable PDF, the way you get to it is: open the audible book in the app, tap the 3 dots menu in the top right corner, and tap "Accompanying PDF". Once you have it open you can save it to your device, save it to Google drive, etc.
