best book on nutrition since how not to die

I heard Dr. B on a plant based podcast and i just finished listening tothis book for the THIRD time. I'm a plant based nutrition fiend and this is the best book ive read since dr. Gregers how not to die, which changed my life, my partners life, and though we didn't know it at the time, our daughters life. this book gets into the mechanism behind how plant based eating improves health - the microbiome! dr. B is no Michael Greger.. the studies cited are not reviewed in detail, but clearly he is well read and leads with the studies. he gets an A from this research methods professor. I also loves the discussion about behavior change and growth mindset. and the best part is that this book encouraged me and my partner to cut out the processed junk from our vegan diet and reclaim the whole-foods in whole-foods-plant-based. can't wait to see how my kraut turns out! thanks dr. b.

Unnecessary information

This book could be a lot shorter. The author continues to use technical long words to increase the length of the book. The important information could be provided in less than two hours. The book Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski was much more comprehensive.

Gut info is fantastic, vegan emphasis is not.

Dr. Bulsiewicz clearly knows what he is talking about when it comes to fiber and gut health. That information is worth the price of the book. I particularly enjoyed his de-bunking of the demonization of plant foods - grains, legumes, nightshades, etc. However, he then goes on to demonize all animal foods using the same types of limited and flawed arguments and studies that he unraveled on the plant side.
In summary, the gut health information is great. As far as whether a vegan diet is a good idea for most people, or even best for the environment - I would have liked to see a more balanced and well-researched treatment.

first science driven nutrition book i have read

I have struggled with gut health over the past year. I have listened to many nutrition books that claimed to be driven by science or human evolutionary history. Unfortunately many of these were filled with flawed logic and a poor understanding of general scientific consensus. This book was different. It was based on a thorough review of available scientific literature. The advice in this book has also been highly effective at improving my gut health and overall feeling of health. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Excellent, Intelligent, DIVERSITY OF PLANTS

D IVERSITY OF PLANTS in your diet...stronger healthy diverse microbe -- healthy you. Fiber is powerfully healing and this book is excellent. Dr B is funny and smart! I recommend this book! I like the guy that's reading the book he sounds like Dr B!

Great Information. . Great Naration.

Usually I most enjoy the books that are read by the author. The narrator of this book was so enthusiastic in his reading that I felt like it was his story. Great information and advice for health seekers everywhere.

High expectations

There is some good in this book but I kind of had hoped that it would go more into how to transition into a vegetarian diet. It just gave the tired old go slow advice. The end of the book got boring and I could not finish it. The narrator has a lot of enthusiasm but he doesn't really have a full quiver to work with. I would have preferred a slightly more organized approach. The PDF has a shopping list and the first week is an explosion of vegetables etc. For someone like me, who is trying to transition, it would be too much for me to handle.

Good introduction to the microbiome

Not a bad book, but I expected more from a doctor who is a specialist in this field. There's a fair bit of repetition and filler. Probably a good read for someone who doesn't really know anything about gut health, but it could do with a bit more substance. The audiobook I read just before this was Dr Michael Greger's How Not to Diet. This book seems a bit lightweight by comparison.

A MUST for anyone trying to understand the gut

Let me start with the writer's CV:

- Med school at Georgetown School of Medicine
- Trained in medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
- Trained in GASTROENTEROLOGY at The University of North Carolina Hospitals
- Got Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Northwestern University
- Certificate in nutrition from Cornell University.
- Board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology

Given all the 'gurus', non medical doctors, influencers or even journalists online spreading their misinformation on gut health it was refreshing to see someone who is actually more than qualified to talk about it. Very thorough research, very well explained and from credible sources and studies. Definitely A MUST for anyone trying to understand the gut.

Mind blown

Not what I was hoping for

I was looking forward to this book as I wanted to learn more about fibre and its benefits on human digestion and make inroads into eating more in my diet. Being a competitive cyclist I take my nutrition seriously and I found the book was written like it was preaching to children rather than a serious educational book for adults, making awkward jokes about defecation and skating around the word faeces with "poop". There were some take home information but a lot of contradictive messages like sugar. Will goes into detail with pretty much all his findings, stating scientific evidence and explaining the biological data etc as you'd expect but with the sugar section it is pretty basic with little data other than "sugar is bad" but not when its in food!! I consume a lot of sugar, without it I wouldn't be able to do the rides and training I do. Sugar is instant glycogen, without fat it is absorbed into my cells and gives me the energy boost I need. The book however demonised sugar but promoted the unlimited energy on the diet. So I persisted with the book and near end the book the bombshell is dropped. Caffeine. Promoting the diet as healthy and also promoting caffeine did not leave me feeling confident, stimulates like caffeine are socially accepted neurotoxins that fatigue body in particular the thyroid. It's like buying energy with a credit card, you have to pay it back. Constantly feeding your self with natures pesticide which alerts the brain to remove the poison from your body, increasing blood flow, dilating veins and arteries and evacuating the digestive organs to rid the body of caffeine is not a state the body needs to be in daily. This was a big turn off on the book and like other restrictive diets once a stimulant is prescribed it's clear the nutrition is lacking.
Despite the above there are some take homes, fermented foods and sprouting is something I'll be adding to my diet but I will not be reducing my sugar intake just yet.

Good book, but won't play on my mp3 player.

I was looking forward to listening to the whole book but I just can't get it to play on my mp3 (Sandisk clip sport) player no matter what I do, every other book from audible plays fine so I don't know what the problem with this one is (and it is in the same enhanced format as my other audible books). From what I've listened to so far on my PC it is very interesting, and it comes with a helpful PDF. I'll get the kindle version too so I can read it properly. The challenge to eat 40 different plant foods a week is a great way to make healthy eating more interesting as it shifts the focus from removing "bad foods" to increasing good ones. I have IBS so I kind of cheat somewhat by making food into soups and smoothies and sometimes peeling fruits and veg, and I rarely eat salads, but I have still felt the benefits of eating a more diverse range of plant foods.

Simple map to health

This is a good health bible. All advice well explained and easy to follow. Yes we all know we should eat our veg. This book explains why and says how the author managed to put the building blocks in place for his own life. He is an expert in this field. There is a lot of content. The audiobook helped me plough through all the information. Definitely worth it. I have been inspired and feeling the benefit

Absolutely Amazing!

I first heard of Dr B whilst listening to the Plant Proof Podcast by Simon Hill and was completely taken back by his knowledge. It has changed the way I eat and my relationship to food for the better and I'm so happy his book has finally come out so others can benefit aswell!

Just listen to it.

The book provides detailed information of gut, microbiome and how different foods are used in the body. The author has sincerely written the book on the relationship between foods and our health. If you want yo be healthiest version of you, I definitely recommend it.
