Imagine this (go ahead, it's an easy one): You're bored with your workouts. Nothing's changing; you're not getting stronger or leaner or feeling better, and, heck, maybe you'll just take a layoff and see what happens. You know what happens. That two-week layoff lasts a year, that's what happens! Now consider this: Traffic was light and you're 15 minutes early for your dental cleaning appointment. You flip open your device and bring up your new copy of Before We Go. By the time the dental tech calls you, you've heard two chapters and are amped to get to the gym. Your mind is racing through the appointment, and it's all you can do to stay in that squeaky lounge chair.

In this collection of short talks, I tried to link together what I thought was crucial and important in the fitness field - and in sports in general - that sometimes don't work very well in something like a book or an article. These are all too long for an article, and too short for a book. But they're all very important principles, and these are all concepts I think need to be linked together.

Publisher's Summary
Most diet and workout books are focused on the wrong things: They focus on WHAT instead of HOW. The leanest people focus on how, on their eating habits, not on fad diets. Diets that rely on willpower and discipline fail. The path to results is made up of eleven small, simple, step-by-step habits. Rotating through phases of metabolic, endurance, and strength workouts yields the best fat-loss results.
- 1. Almost all diet and workout books are focused on the wrong things - They focus on 'what’ instead of 'how.'
- 2. The leanest people focus on eating habits, not on fad diets.
- 3. Diets that rely on willpower and discipline fail. A smart plan wins.
- 4. The path to results is eleven small, simple, step-by-step habits.
- 5. Rotating through phases of metabolic workouts, endurance workouts, and strength workouts yields the best fat-loss results.
- 6. Pull-ups are the strength move for fat loss. A smart, progressive plan can take you from absolute zero, to your first, third, or tenth pull-up.
- 7. High-intensity workouts are power tools, most effective only twice per year before important events.
Josh Hillis and Dan John know these habit-based diet and workout hacks, and they teach them well. JOSH HILLIS is a nutrition coach who specializes in habits-based, positive changes. LoseStubbornFat, his popular fat-loss blog, has tens of thousands of readers, and his fat-loss and kettlebell-training ebooks have helped people reach their personal goals for more than 10 years. Josh is currently the head coach at PowerHour Personal Training in Denver. DAN JOHN spends his work life blending workshops and lectures with full-time writing, and is an online religious studies instructor for Columbia College of Missouri. His books include Intervention, Never Let Go, Mass Made Simple and Easy Strength, which was written with Pavel Tsatsouline.

Sound information not intended for audio
Is there anything you would change about this book?
If the accompanying PDF came with information regarding the 11 habits and how to use the differing strategies. It's too inefficient to have to sift through audio to refer back to important tidbits.
What other book might you compare Fat Loss Happens on Monday to and why?
"The End of Overeating." They both seem to use a no nonsense approach.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His passion.
Was Fat Loss Happens on Monday worth the listening time?
No. I'd prefer reading it.

A "feel-good" fat-loss manual.
Before I review the book, I should mention that some chapters are great as an audiobook (particularly Dan John's portions). Other portions of the book are really more conducive to reading (like the strength programming chapters, which simply refer you to view the "included PDF". I'm new to Audible and unsure where the PDF is stored, so I didn't see those chapters here. I have the book on my Kindle, too, so it wasn't a big deal for me.
Now the review:
Dan John's chapters alone make this book a MUST-read for anyone with the desire to be better. And I don't just mean with regard to fat loss. I actually forgot, at times, that I was reading (yet another) book on fat loss. I stumbled across Dan's name because another trainer who I respect mentioned him in one of her digital products. Google led me to this book, and I am so glad the stars aligned. Dan's wisdom, humility and humor are a pleasure to read and he really digs into the way that perspective and approach contribute to our success (or lack thereof). But more importantly, he emphasizes enjoyment of the journey. He is a natural leader and left me feeling very motivated.
Josh Hillis had tons of practical advice and delivers straight-talk about how to get the body you desire. It's very matter-of-fact and, if you want to lose fat, amazingly helpful. I love the sensible "11 Habits" as a foundation upon which to build a lifestyle. I've done loads of research on how to eat the right foods to look amazing naked, and these habits are spot-on--and much, much more clearly explained in this book than most other resources. "Do this. Get that. Do that. Get this." No BS. Plus, Josh explains the hierarchy of which habits are most important and how to apply them.
If you are ready to dig into your own lifestyle habits, and truly try to unveil what works and what doesn't, this book is the next best thing to hiring a coach. If you're still feeling super emotional and angsty about whether your tired body can even lose weight anymore, the sensible advice in this book WILL HELP. It's reassuring to see the path. To paraphrase from the book, fat loss isn't a mystery, it's just a problem. And problems have solutions.
If, however, you're feeling overly emotional and still looking for a magic bullet that will deliver an ideal body in 30 days or less ... you're just not ready. And that makes me sad for you. You deserve the solid information in this book. If you can step away from your despair (and junk food), I have full faith that THIS BOOK can help you get where you need to go. Imagine the difference a year can make. :) I finally did!!

Where's the pdf?
The sound quality is very poor. The information conveyed is life changing. However, it is repetitive in some places. Unfortunately, you will not be able to follow along with the well thought out workouts since no pdf is included with the purchase. The exercise program is a required part of the program as Josh repeatedly says. Perhaps, he can be persuaded to put the pdf on his website? I feel really upset about not having access to the workout program. I do not recommend this book because it is incomplete.

Good information, albeit incredibly repetitive
The principles are sound and the habits they suggest are functional and important to long-term overall health. That said, the chapters by Josh Hillis are unbearably repetitive and I found myself starting to skip to the next chapter halfway through hoping that the next chapter was a Dan John authored chapter. Josh Hillis also repeats the phrase "Lean and Sexy" upwards of 100 times. The judgments Hillis placed on being "lean and sexy" vs. being "skinny fat" or "loose and giggly" weren't really my cup of tea. Dan John, on the other hand, goes past the superficial and is much deeper in his presentation of strong health habits for life.
Audio quality was an issue. Preview before you purchase to decide if you can tolerate the poor audio quality. Also, @audible, where's the advertised PDF download? There should be a credit or refund issued given that the PDF is nowhere to be found.

Great content with a few minor glitches
Dan John is always good. On point, funny and actionable. Same can be said about his co-author here. Only real downside being this as an audiobook, parts of it were a bit "list-y". He also repeats a few times in a row that this chapter does not suit audio and must be viewed on PDF. That could have been consolidated into "chapters 23-25 do not suit audio...."
Overall though really enjoyed it and the information presented is solid.
