Publisher's summary

Ninety-plus-year-old Rubin James awakes in the hospital discovering not only has he suffered a stroke, but an inoperable brain aneurysm is bringing him to certain death.

Ten-year-old Jonathan Baines has a rare form of brain cancer. Despite all the efforts of his talented doctor father, the cancer's relentless spread has not been stopped, and death appears to be just days away.

Rubin and Jonathan meet seemingly by accident, only to discover that God’s providence has woven together their life stories, as both are exposed to the startling story of Lazarus of Bethany. Lazarus' story, a man dead for four days, and his resurrection from that death, paves the way for hope not only for Rubin and Jonathan, but for their families and friends, as they experience the miraculous work of the man called Christ.

Loved the research, creativity, and message

The author has done an awe-inspiring job of combining the Biblical accounts, research, theology, and fiction to create two inspiring and intertwined stories: the witness of Lazarus, his family and community of Bethany with the modern tale of two very ill hospital patients, one old, one young. I had picked up this book in written form, but put it down again. If you're writing about God's actions in the lives of people, won't you get a deus ex machina ending? Without a spoiler alert, I can say I was surprised, pleased, satisfied, and deeply moved. In auditory form, sometimes the switching between the history and the story can be a little confusing, especially at the beginning. It's nice to be able to go back and replay it. I wish the narrator had been skilled enough to help us by changing the pitch, tone, or pace of his voice, as I have heard in other recordings, especially since the text gives cues ("as she resumed reading, her voice changed."), but I did enjoy the accent and the clear enunciation.

Amazing story with deep meaning

I absolutely love the author’s take on expanding the stories of those seemingly secondary characters from the Bible but who played a part in the life of Jesus and helped shape the store of redemption, salvation, and grace. Uplifting and full of hope, this book was a pleasure to read and fun to listen to as well.

Like the characters, I had to hear the rest!

If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to have experienced first hand being healed or raised from the dead by Jesus, or what it was like to live during the time Jesus was alive from a perspective not written about in the Bible, read or listen to this story! I couldn’t put it down, I simply had had to know what happened!
