#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her latest book, Brené Brown writes, “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.”

In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.

Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s singular skills as a storyteller, to show us how accurately naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice.

Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

How many emotions can you name
Happiness, sadness, anger, and...then? In surveys taken by 7,000 people over five years, Brené Brown and her team found that on average people can identify only those three emotions as they are actually feeling them. In Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience, Brown unpacks 87 distinct emotions, gathered into 13 land masses—including such biggies as lonely, jealousy, love, hopelessness, and despair—and backs it up with research. As fans of her popular Ted Talks, best-selling books, podcasts, and Netflix lectures series already know, this cartographer of the human experience delivers an actionable guide to healing and making better decisions, especially when it comes to shame and guilt. In her latest, Brown goes beyond her previous works to mine her personal biography, revealing new layers of vulnerability despite all the logic and intense study. So I'm looking forward to hearing her share her battles—she’s a recovered alcoholic, a committed swimmer, a former waitress, a perfectionist from a dysfunctional but high-performing family—all punctuated with her big laugh and Texas twang. —Jerry P., Audible Editor

As a college librarian that teaches information literacy, I am so grateful to Brené Brown for citing where she’s getting her information. In a world of misinformation and disinformation, I applaud and am grateful to her weaving in her storytelling with showing her references. Oh, and teaching me to name my feelings and shit. Love you, Brené.

Brené Brown has been a driving force for positive change in my life since 2014. I would dare to say she is THE conversation starter/leader for the catalytic power of vulnerability, shame, and connection in the lives of diverse, yet uniquely similar, humans worldwide. I will be forever grateful for the words to express things I have longed to say for years. These words have validated my feelings and brought meaning to confusing situations and emotions, and best of all — they help me make sense of myself and my relationships. I highly recommend this book

The etymology of emotion is laid out with perfect grace and detail. I finally have the words…

I wish it was an international requirement for every household to have a copy of this book. It helps to re-educate myself and encourage others to do the same to better understand oneself and our behaviors towards each other. A true guide to re-define and dissect terminology regarding emotions and feelings, that will help to make each encounter and interaction with oneself and others more meaningful, effective, and purposeful.
It is so much more engaging when the author narrates his/her own story. Thanks for sharing you!

Enjoyably self confronting master piece

I completely agree with everyone else who has commented on the excellent reading of this book. Having listened to many audiobooks, I find that Dr. Brown's presentation is uniquely engaging, perhaps in part because she is a self-proclaimed avid audiobook listener.
Bandhu, if you see this comment, you asked about the illustrations...go to your Audible library and there should be a "View PDF" link on the right side of the book description, just below "Listen Now". The PDF is well worth downloading; the images beautifully illustrate the points.
I can't wait to "backtrack" and listen to Brené Brown's other works.

I personally find the author’s narration a tad annoying- over use of the word “like,” as an example. A wonderful work and my commentary is simply personal. I look beyond this to the content which is excellent. Thank you for also including the full color illustration.

Love This Work!
