The desire for dignity is universal and powerful. It is a motivating force behind all human interaction - in families, in communities, in the business world, and in relationships at the international level. When dignity is violated, the response is likely to involve aggression, even violence, hatred, and vengeance. On the other hand, when people treat one another with dignity, they become more connected and are able to create more meaningful relationships.

Surprisingly, most people have little understanding of dignity, observes Donna Hicks in this important book. Drawing on her extensive experience in international conflict resolution and on insights from evolutionary biology, psychology, and neuroscience, the author explains what the elements of dignity are, how to recognize dignity violations, how to respond when we are not treated with dignity, how dignity can restore a broken relationship, why leaders must understand the concept of dignity, and more. Hicks shows that by choosing dignity as a way of life, we open the way to greater peace within ourselves and to a safer and more humane world for all.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"With its accessible tone, pithy observations and lessons, and Hicks's argument that the 'quest for dignity is as common in the boardroom as in the bedroom', this book is a must-read for all." (Publishers Weekly)

With so much going on in the world right now, one thing we cannot allow is to be treated with indignity. This book truly has given me new found perspective and knowledge. Thank you immensely, Donna Hicks, Ph.D

Foundational perspective on an important topic for which threads can be pulled across all lived experiences. I tend to prefer brevity in illustrative examples; I mostly found the examples/stories helpful. This book is useful for giving names to prior experience. Applicable to life at all ages…a must read.

Donna Hicks has given the world a gift with Dignity and Its Role in Resolving Conflict. This is not simply a book about conflict resolution—it is a roadmap for becoming more fully human.

As an educator and school leader, this book profoundly changed the way I think about relationships, leadership, and learning. Hicks reminds us that beneath every conflict is a universal human need: the need to have our dignity recognized, protected, and restored. Her framework is practical, deeply compassionate, and immediately applicable in every setting.

What resonated with me most is that dignity should not be reserved for moments of conflict. It must be intentionally taught, modeled, and practiced every day until it becomes a way of living and treating one another. In education especially, we spend enormous amounts of time responding to broken relationships, yet far too little time proactively building cultures where dignity is the norm. Imagine if children learned the principles of dignity alongside reading and mathematics—not as another program, but as the foundation of how we lead, communicate, disagree, and belong.

This book has inspired me to rethink what education can be. I believe dignity-centered schools have the power to transform not only classrooms, but families, communities, and future generations.

If you are a teacher, administrator, parent, coach, or anyone who works with people, this book is essential reading. Donna Hicks has articulated something that the world desperately needs: peace is not created by avoiding conflict, but by learning to honor the dignity of every human being.

Five stars is simply not enough.
