Publisher's summary

Once Olympia Wingfield had been free to devote all her time to her true passion: the study of ancient legends and long-lost treasure. But now, with three hellion nephews to raise, the absentminded beauty has very little time for research. Which makes it seem all the more serendipitous when a handsome stranger strides into Olympia’s library unannounced and proceeds to set her world to rights....

Tall and dark, with long, windswept black hair, Jared Chillhurst is the embodiment of Olympia’s most exotic dreams…a daring pirate, masquerading in teacher’s garb, whose plundering kisses and traveler’s tales quickly win her heart. Yet all too soon innocent Olympia will discover the enigmatic and wickedly sensual Mr. Chillhurst is no lowly tutor but a future earl with a wealth of secrets – the kind that will lead them both on a perilous quest for a hidden fortune and a love worth more than gold.

Critic reviews

"A featherlight, warmhearted fantasy with lots besides bedroom frolics going on, and it's all in a modern idiom (only one "mayhap'"). Fans will welcome this perfect little popover of a romance." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Terrible narration...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think I should have read the paperback book rather than listening to the story. The narrator just made it impossible to get fully into the story. The dragging voice, ridiculous tone inflections on certain words was almost comical at times. The narrator is really doing a dis-service to the book...

What was most disappointing about Amanda Quick’s story?

The story was light. It's an easy book to read (again insisting on reading it and NOT listening to it due to the terrible narration). I enjoyed the story.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anne Flosnik?

Anyone but her!!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story is definitely light and easy to read.

Poor narration

I can't say for certain that the story itself is bad. I had so much difficulty getting past the annoying narrator that I could barely concentrate on the story. Normally I enjoy Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz, so it is possible that the story was entertaining. Unfortunately, the narrator thought it was necessary to whisper-growl most of the voices and most statements were made in an exclamation with the last word of sentences being drawn out. It is sad but true that a narrator can make or break a good book. Perhaps this particular book should be read in paperback form rather than listening to the audio version. So, I will not comment on the storyline itself, just be aware that the narrator will pull you out of the story almost continually. I found myself dwelling on her pronuciations and excited whispers.

Delightful!

Best of the new Quick books IMO. I like Regency though tire of oft repeated plots. This takes a different slant and not always predictable. It's fascinating to hear the developing relationships of all the characters especially the interchanges between the two leads, starting from the introduction of the "tutor" into a madcap household. Both main characters are quite unique and balance each other very well as does the storyline. Definitely fun for summer read ...or anytime.

Great Read!

Deception has everything required in a great book--love, suspence and likable characters. Anne Flosnik is a talented narrator, having the ability to bring each character to life with recognition.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.

At last my Favorite Quick Book!!

This is my favortite Quick book. I grabbed it the day it became avaiable. love the story, the wit, the danger, and gotta love the In-Laws!! i have worn out several paperback versions and a hard back...now i listen in the car and on my MP3 palyer!!! Her older books are my favorite. I also like that she doesn't feel the need to give the reader(listener) a history lesson when telling her tale! Just plain FUN. I hope some of the older ones like Mistress, With this Ring, I Thee Wed and a few others will come out with unabridges versions. I have the tape versions......./sob...i would love a unabridged verson not the horriable abridged ones they have avaiable.

Lots of fun!!!

This is not the Great American Novel, but it is HUGE FUN!!!! Definitely worth the credit, especially if you are already a fan of Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz).

(Note on date-published: This new recording may be 2009 & 2010, but the actual storey's original copyright date is 1993.)

Still great even as a reread

reread, snarky, humor, pirate-treasure, historical-romance, cartography
Read from January 01, 2013 to July 10, 2016

This is one of my *go to* books that I finally had to get in audio. Whenever real life needs to go away for a while, I need one of my *go to* books.
Sure, it's a kind of formula novel, in the same way as a video game, but the author is the one with the imagination, and no quick reflexes needed.
Olympia is a single guardian to three boys who, like her, have been orphaned and passed around to distant family members. Her heart is definitely in the right place, but her brain is into research in books.
In walks a one-eyed man who looks like a pirate, makes his money legally, and has a family crazier than mine.
Let the romance begin.
A fine tale with lots of twists, snarks, and situational guffaws.
I still think that Anne Flosnik would make an old time radio player blush. Or silent film star.

her portals of womanly passion.. Classic

I met the narrator, Ms. Flosnik, at a function in New York and she asked me to judge one of her books, so I stepped out of my usual genre and thought I'd listen to a romance. I rated this four stars (3.5 stars for Amanda Quick and 4.5 stars for Anne Flosnik). It is a light hearted and entertaining listen. Though it is the stereotypical romanance novel, full of cliche sexual references at every sex scene. Anne did an excellent job and I plan on hearing more from her! I'm usually hard on female narrators as they usually over-do male character voices and wind up sounding like shool boys pretending to be adults so they can buy beer - but Anne's male voices were very easy to listen to.

I knocked her down half a star for two reasons. As she does not have a "Truly-Scrumptious-from-Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang" voice in real life, I noticed moments where the sentence flow was a little staccato as she worked on trying to read in perfect elocution. I also wish her voice was a little more "pirate" like for Jared's father and uncle as they were decended from buccaneers.

The book itself is "cheezy" at times. It would not be hard to imagine a different cover for the book that had a bare chested Fabio in a pirate shirt with a raven haired beauty pawing at his shaved chest in front of a firey sunset... But it was fun and I was thoroughly entertained!

Good work Ms. Flosnik!

Waste of time

What would have made Deception better?

The narrator.

What could Amanda Quick have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It simply wasn't my type of book. There was too much romance/passion/sex in the book that were not written very well. Reminded me of Barbara Cartland romance novels I read as a girl. I've moved on from that phase in life! The description didn't lead me to believe it was this type of book. It was much more about the relationship between the 2 principals and their "passion" then the mystery.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Way too much drama and attempt to depict the "passion" of the novel. Did not depict the characters voices well at all.
