Publisher's summary

In the words of Lee Child on Gone to Dust, “I want more of Nils Shapiro.” New York Times best-selling and Emmy Award-winning author Matt Goldman happily obliges by bringing the Minneapolis private detective back for another thrilling stand-alone adventure in Dead West.

Nils Shapiro accepts what appears to be an easy, lucrative job: find out if Beverly Mayer’s grandson is foolishly throwing away his trust fund in Hollywood, especially now, in the wake of his fiancée’s tragic death. However, that easy job becomes much more complicated once Nils arrives in Los Angeles, a disorienting place where the sunshine hides dark secrets.

Nils quickly suspects that Ebben Mayer’s fiancée was murdered, and that Ebben himself may have been the target. As Nils moves into Ebben’s inner circle, he discovers that everyone in Ebben’s professional life - his agent, manager, a screenwriter, a producer - seems to have dubious motives at best.

With Nils' friend Jameson White, who has come to Los Angeles to deal with demons of his own, acting as Ebben’s bodyguard, Nils sets out to find a killer before it’s too late.

Chill

Mr Pinchot does a fine job here. Of course he is different than Mr Andrews, but the idea that his voice is sexist or racist is quite a reach. We do get used to our readers, but the comments on this one were a little harsh.
For me this was the least engrossing of the series, but I would still recommend it.

Fantastic!

Great story, hysterically funny, and the narrator was spot on!!! I listen at 1.7x dprrd and I highly recommend you you try it. I would read every book ever written by this author if read by Bronson Pinchot. I will definitely read the other books read by others and hope for another stellar reader!

Bronson Pinchot does not get this book

Rapid fire monotone combined with really weird accents and emphasis.
The narration ruins the enjoyment in such a good story.

Uneven performance, good story

Great story. Grand characters. The reader ruined parts with arbitrary pauses and bizarre accents. Luckily, it all smoothed out by the end.

Needs a new narrator

Great narration for every character EXCEPT the lead!! It’s difficult find the transitions from the storytelling and the lead character’s dialogue. The cadence for the lead character rarely matches the situation. He does a great job with ALL of the others but I had a hard time getting through this one.

Mixed review

I absolutely love these stories but the reader made it almost torturous to listen. Almost every sentence is made to sound like a question and I almost stopped listening several times. I will be previewing all my books from now on because if I can’t listen to the reader, I’ll just buy the actual book.

Another great story, but narration was a distraction

The change in narrator was not a good choice. The pace and phrasing of the narrator was annoying and distracting. I love this series. I hope that the narration on the next book is improved! Loved the previous narrator.

Cheesy

Not nearly as good as the previous in the series. Felt pretty cheesy and contrived.

McLeod is Nils!

Extremely hard to be invested 3 books into a series to experience a major narrator change. The slow deliberate delivery of Bronson does not fit the quick witted humor of this character.
