Publisher's summary

They say when the demons come, you either fight or you die.

The Black Dogs know this all too well. For 300 years, the warrior priests have sacrificed their lives to keep the island nation of Abios safe from the flesh-eating Nostros, while the rest of the world fell under the demons' savagery. However, an armada now stands poised to invade mankind's last bastion.

Child thief Jack Frey is saved from the gallows and joins the mysterious order. Trained with the bullet and the blade, Jack finds himself on the front line of a centuries-old war.

Across the Angel Sea, Lin is fighting for her life. As a slave of the Nostros, she knows death can strike at any time, either at the hands of her masters or her fellow humans.

Little do they know mankind's fate lies in both their hands.

truly evil enemies

The nostros are truly diabolical - which makes the action sequences very suspenseful. I liked the character of Jack a lot - not perfect and reminded me in moments of another fictional Jack I like (Reacher - from the books not the movies of course!). Simon Vance is fantastic as usual and I'm looking forward to hearing what happens in the next tale.

best new series I've started in a long time

I really wasn't ready or prepared for how in-depth the story became truly a wonderful and enjoyable book

Great start to a series

I think the most helpful reviews are the ones that list similar books. The story was great, characters were great, narration was great.
If you liked the warded man, or blood song you’ll enjoy this.

Great Listen.

Simon Vance is a master of his trade and Morris' story makes it easy on him in this one.

Good story with a small scope.

This wasn't epic fantasy, though it did have some of the devices and trappings of the genre. It was sort of a small story in that you really only got to know the two MC's as fully fleshed out characters. All the other people in the story were kind of two dimensional levers interacting with the MC's.

That said it was well written, professionally edited, entertaining, and enjoyable, though maybe not the most complex story ever written. I would disregard the negative reviews that claim that this book is derivative or played out. I felt that it was pretty original in a number of ways and the parallels to other books were at worst superficial. Definitely worth a credit if you're looking for an entertaining listen.

Simon Vance is a great narrator.

Good story, excellent narration. I thought it was a tad bit formulaic, but formulas exist for a reason. I found the story enjoyable, but I might have been tempted to put it down, were I reading it. Simon Vance really brought it together and gave the setting a more legitimate feeling.

Did a publisher write this book?

The characters and story are as derivative and predictable as the prayers the preists repeat throughout the book. Its like when someone takes a poplular song, puts it in a commercial and replaces the lyrics with something about Ford trucks. It's 9 hrs of checking off dark fantasy boxes complete with narration by Simon Vance.... Of course.
Vampires (nostros) are literally the ONLY original thing about this book and even they are one dimensional Dominos to be knocked over. I won't be following up with this series.
