Publisher's summary

With great corruption comes great power.

Jack is pretty sure that's the way the saying goes. It's a good thing, too, for the war in Ter’nodril, which he’d hoped would spell the beginning of the end for the DIR, instead left him corrupted, body and soul. The good news is that the Fallen used the Blight that now fills his veins as a weapon in their war against the gods themselves. He’s sure that he can find a way to use it, too, to destroy Valia Online once and for all. He even knows exactly who he'll test its power against first: Manhart.

He must find an answer a question he’s wanted to ask since they first met: What sound will the lich make when he’s dying?

just not as good as the first 2

book 1 and 2 rock great story, great narration, good plot twists, but this book just all over the place and the end of the book makes me sick just thinking about it

WTF

Well I loved the first two, but the ending to this one is a punch to the neck. Like game of thrones kinda ending. Will there be a come back? Or will we being listening to a puppets story. Disappointing to say the least. Shame... Performance was great.

Written well, but...

i mostly liked the story, but the twist ending was disappointing. Not that it wasn't written well, I just was hoping it wasn't going to be the ending mid way through my listening. It breaks the story. Making it unrecoverable for some listeners. For me this series is over, and if another book is made I will not be picking up.

skip this one because spoiler makes it pointless

The book skips a period after the climax of the previous book and frustratingly only drops tidbits of how Jack got free every few hours, BUT there's no indication that those parts are in the past. Instead, the book spends an agonizing amount of time dealing with gameplay mechanics (it even goes through patch notes at one point) and training periods. It's very tedious. Additionally, Jack sort of regresses as a character and is being a selfish dickhead for most of the time. If you want an evil protagonist, he certainly is one in this book. Sam also feels different. A bit more emotional, but since her player was role-playing, it's hard to really have a good bead on the character or the player sometimes.

MASSIVE SPOILER BELOW!!!!

It turns out the reason how he escaped in the real world and why he has regressed, as well as Sam being different, is because it's revealed in the last chapter how they got into the first login of the book: we're not following the characters from reality anymore; the game made AIs of them to continue to further Jack's mission to destroy the game. For some unrevealed reason.

Not as creative as the first two

I'm still invested in this story but it lost something in this book. Lost the grind or the hustle or something maybe it just felt like more fantasy then litrpg but I am still here for it.

Unfortunate end?

First two books were great and this third started out similarly. The end to this book just kinda ruined the whole story. Could have been so much better.

great twist

I didn't see that ending coming. This book was different than the others. it was annoying that some questions were left unasked /answered.
but was good that it didn't follow the standard story arc, if it's the last?

great narration as always.

wow

I understand why some people are bashing this book but at the same time it was a ridiculous ride and really enjoyable. It's rare that I can't guess a twist but this definitely got me. I'm now hooked to this author.

Wow!

Best one yet with the most wild ending ever! Now I can't wait for the next one. As always Jeff Hayes adds the power of his voice bringing life to all my favorite characters. Wish you both the best speed and inspiration with the next volume.

Book 3

Another great performance by Jeff, enjoyed the book though sceptical about its ending... best get book 4 done ASAP so I can decide if I want to feel outraged or not :-)

Not a book to be missed by any online game player ;-)

Great story

A great continuation of the story, I thoroughly enjoyed this book the narrator did a amazing job of bringing the characters to life. I like many others, have a bit of a issue with the ending. I will be interested to see where the author takes the story next. I will continue with the next book.

So Very Mixed

No spoilers.
Performance is excellent, consistency in character voices, great range of emotion.
The story is a massive risk. I felt cheated, I felt like it was a total waste of time and as if the author gambled and failed…. However, a fourth book could save it.
If I only had one credit a month, I wouldn’t use it on this.

The best at what it does,

Firstly, spectacular narration as always; Jeff, it was as usual, masterful.

When you're in the LITRPG genre and you don't have a game that the character can escape from, you obviously need a story for outside the game. Quite a few series fall short on that point, but this one doesn't, it is just as string outside as it is in-game. Quite excellent.

This series is getting better and better, can't wait for the next one.

Gratifying yet I feel so hollow by the end.

without giving away spoilers its a good fantasy story but the politics got annoying after awhile and the in and out game story which didn't make alot of sense till the end and when you found out the twist that puts everything on its head I just felt hollow and ungratified in the end so I won't be getting the next book. As obviously it's not my type of book that makes me what to find out what happens next because I just felt ungratified. So if you listen to the book be prepared for a twist and a flick of the events that happen.
