Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

A masterpiece

I'm no theologian or great thinker, so I can't comment in any way that seems weighty or impressive enough on this great work. Although I would recommend that you listen when you have no distractions: there is so much meat in every sentence that you'll miss so much if you focus on anything else! As I read every single chapter, I thought to myself that I must mark that particular one for the world-shaking epiphany it brought, but it kept happening, so I'll just recommend the whole book and undoubtedly listen again.
A book written in the voice of a demon might be hard to imagine or believe, but Joss Ackland's performance is not only believable but delicious in its subtleties and inflections.

Excellent narration for an excellent book

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this narration of The Screwtape Letters. Joss does a wonderful job impersonating Screwtape which gives a sinister and life-like perspective considering he is a devil. C.S. Lewis masterfully explores themes related to everyday temptation in an entertaining but realistic way. It is worth listening to multiple times. I definitely recommend this book.

Great performance by the narrator

Where does The Screwtape Letters rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Definitely on the Top 3 of audiobooks I've listened to so far.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Basically there's only one character: Screwtape.

What about Joss Ackland’s performance did you like?

I really loved his performance. Witty and brings the sarcastic tone of the book to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Can't really remember. But overall I've enjoyed it.

Any additional comments?

I don't really like the last part, "Screwtape proposes a toast".

Such a great reader and a new addition I hadn’t read previously

The reader is fantastic.

I had never heard of Screwtape’s toast which was apparently addended to this book by CSL himself after being begged for more.

Great read!

Excellent book and excellent to listen to!

This book is such an engaging book to listen to! As a Christian, I found it insightful into human nature, God's nature and the nature of the demonic realm. However, I think anyone would enjoy the story and find it challenging.

A mental and spiritual challenge

Screwtape Letters will challenge your thoughts, behaviors and perspectives. It should be read in small sections and processed before moving on. Lewis gives a new perspective on temptation, relationships, politics and how Satan is always conspiring against humanity to minimize the Christians impact on those around him/her and society and the church at large.
