Great Dramatization!

I used this with my 7th grade English. The students were struggling to understand the text because most 13 year olds don't read iambic pentameter well, not to mention archaic words. We were into the third act when I used an Audible credit to get this version. Tbe kids loved it. Their understanding increased and when it did, so did their enjoyment. I'm so glad their introduction to Shakespeare turned out so well!

Very Romantic and Tragic

This audiobook is so amazing. It is romantic but tragic. Romeo and Juliet never gets old. It is definitely one of my favorite books. The narrators are great. I highly recommend to all.

A good place to START! Especially for Americans who are new to Shakespeare.

A fine, solid performance, if you don’t mind American accents. No offense intended! I speak as an American. I doubt I will ever experience the full measure of Romeo and Juliet’s pleasure when performed by anything other than British voices, but for someone not so readily put off by our Colonists’ way with the language—to my ear, unrefined, almost uncouth, or simply inappropriate, for Shakespeare—this could be A GOOD CHOICE.

For many, Shakespeare is an acquired taste, and the process of acquiring it can seem daunting. Sadly, many give up too soon, incapable of fathoming that the reward for their perseverance will, in the end, far outweigh the cost.

For most Americans, the world and words of Shakespeare are so old as to be utterly new. Initial exposures to the great bard can leave a person with the strange sensation of listening to a foreign language, even as the characters speak the listener’s native tongue.

In this production, which is authentic enough to be true to the tale and to the unrivaled talents of its author, American listeners can focus on decoding unfamiliar words and wordplays, without the added challenge of deciphering unfamiliar accents.

But this must be considered a mere REHEARSAL! It is JUST THE FIRST STEP, a prelude to the far fuller joy of listening to a performance by a cast of Brits.

There are several worthy options available through Audible. I’m sorry I can’t direct you to one or two off the top of my head. You’ll have no trouble—indeed, will probably enjoy—seeking them out. If I stop to look for them now, I’m afraid I’ll get sidetracked and never get back to posting this review. Happy hunting!

A Pair of Star-Cross'd Lovers Take Their Life 🎭

This was a great listening experience, and I recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone from dramatic scholars who can recite Juliet's soliloquies by heart to junior high school students just beginning to appreciate Shakespeare. One mark of an excellent R&J is that it moves the listener (or viewer) nearly to tears at the scene in which Juliet finds that even her trusted Nurse is ready to abandon her to mortal sin and eternal punishment in the form of an adulterous marriage to Paris when she has already consummated her marriage to Romeo. Her "Thou hast comforted me marvelous much" should be delivered with a shocked coldness audible (and/or visible) to the audience; it should make the audience feel the horror Juliet feels, as she sees that ALL adults have betrayed her. This production succeeds in this regard. These Folger performances really are first-rate, and I hope to eventually acquire all of them. I'm sure I'll listen to this one many more times.

nothing less to be expected from Shakespeare

Quite the lovely story, the template for romance. Such a mark on history that to be someones's "Romeo" or "Juliet" is to be their true love, to death.

This is a good book if you like to listen to a play. It is a played out drama. My daughter had a hard time following what was happening because she hasn't read the book.
