Publisher's Summary

Jane Austen's most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters.

    "Pride and Prejudice"

This audio book was wonderful. The voice of the reader was very easy to listen to, while still affording the ability to distiquish between characters. I listened to it on a flight to and from England and, remarkably, it made the flight enjoyable. I hope you enjoy hearing it as much as I did.

Miss Fox gives a wonderful read of this great book. I love the way she does the different voices. Her timing and inflections are wonderful.

    "Ah, Mr. Darcy!"

There is nothing like listening to your favorite Jane Austen book! Complete with the beautiful accent, it is almost as if she is reading it herself. I hated this to end!! The story was brought to life better than any Hollywood film could have!

    "PURE DELIGHT"

This book is my all time favorite. The dialog is stunning. The characters have become a part of my inner world, they are so real to me. It takes the ordinary theme of young men and women meeting and falling in love to a level that I simply have never encountered in any other story I've read. It is all done with brilliant and cleverly written dialog. To think that this was written by a young woman of her time is truly amazing, that is was so popular at the time is even more amazing and that it continues to be such a favorite is only well deserved.
I enjoyed this audio book very much and look forward to Part II. Although I have read this book at least a dozen times over the past four decades, it is always as delightful as it was the first time I read it.

    "Excellent narration!"

As a classic, this is an obvious must-read. I read it in school but the audiobook made the story so much more enjoyable due to the characters easy-to-understand accent and voice-impersonations. If you haven't read this in a while, definitely listen to the audio version, you will love it!

"Mrs. Bennet is even more annoying on audio"

While this is my favorite book, I had a hard time with the narration. To make Mrs. Bennet so strident, the narrator made her very loud. Charlotte Lucas was narrated very softly. Consequently, I was constantly annoyed at having to adjust my volume.

    "Great reading!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this reading of P&P. At first, it drove me crazy when Ms. Fox would read Mrs. Bennett's lines - she would shriek and wail in a very obnoxious manner. Then I realized this is probably exactly how Mrs. Bennett would have spoken!

    "First Loves Never Die"

You ever notice how your first loves stay with you forever? It's true. Love for things as well sa people, you just... always remember. Well, that's my feeling about Pride and Prejudice. It was one of my first loves.
Jane Austin is an engaging writer. The characters draw you in, and you know who they are because they are people in your life somehow.
The story gets into you somehow and it breaths it's own passion.

I'm not sure what else I can say without giving away the plot, except that I highly recommend this book to anyone with a romantic soul.

    "A joy to read"

I don't feel at all qualified to review a book which has so long been the subject of literary and academic appraisals, so I will say only how much I enjoyed the reading of it. If I could give this six stars I would without hesitation. The story gave real insight into life amongst the landed gentry at this time, the pace was perfect, the plot complex enough to keep the reader intrigued and yet tight enough that not a single line was wasted on superfluous characters or unnecessary diversions. The characters are without exception beautifully and richly developed. The language is an absolute joy to read and reminds me how poor our everyday language is now by comparison. This was simply a joy to read from cover to cover.

    "Immersive storytelling"

This is an excellent performance of a timeless favourite. Emilia Fox uses different voices for different characters very effectively. Darcy is brooding and reserved, Mrs Bennett is shrill and embarrassing and Lizzie is just perfect. I love P&P and will listen to this version again and again.

    "May listen again"

I've read P&P several times and it's nice to be able to listen to a story you know well. The only thing that made it slightly less enjoyable was that I wasn't overly impressed by the attempt at male voices. However, I may still listen again another time.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite classics but Emilia Fox's reading is excellent. At no time did her delivery flag and her changes of voices were just right. Well done for bringing an excellent classic and an excellent reader together and entertaining the listener.

Would you listen to Pride and Prejudice again? Why?

I very much enjoyed this reading of Pride and Prejudice for two reasons. Firstly, this is one of my favourite books and one to which I return time and time again. Secondly the reader, Emilia Fox, is one of my favourite actresses. So, a good combination...

What other book might you compare Pride and Prejudice to, and why?

Any of Jane Austen's books are worthy of comparison.

What does Emilia Fox bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Emilia Fox brings a warmth and humour to the story which only enhance the book's natural strengths.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I prefer to savour the book by listening over several sittings.

    Any additional comments?

As this was my first audiobook I am now eager to listen to other favourite English classics in the same manner. Next up is The Barchester Chronicles by Anthony Trollope....

"Sometimes it's good to revisit the entire book"
    Any additional comments?

Andrew Davis's wonderful TV adaptation with such a memorable and brilliant cast took such a hold on us that sometimes you think it's the same as re-reading the whole book. Of course, it's not.

At first I found it a bit sticky to get into, even the gifted Emilia Fox not quite bringing it to life for me, but that didn't last long. As the book warmed up, so did her narration. By the time we'd reached halfway I couldn't wait to get out of the office at night and get into the car to continue listening.

I was ashamed to realise how much fine detail I'd forgotten from the book, perhaps blinded by Colin Firth's dazzling white shirt. Well worth revisiting, thoroughly recommended.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged..."

...that Pride and Prejudice is one of the greatest books ever written in the English language.

It is unlikely that anyone reading this review doesn't know the basic storyline of P&P already - it has been adapted in so many forms at so many times that you are bound to have seen at least one version of the satirical tale of a pair of would be lovers kept apart through, of course, abundant pride and misplaced prejudice. There can't be many women who haven't wished for a handsome (and very eligible!) Mr Darcy to fall madly in love with them and defy the wishes of their family and social convention to whisk them off their feet. Or is that just me?

However, despite the multitude of film and television versions, there is nothing quite like the original story - full of wit and vivacity (just like its protagonist Elizabeth), never overly wordy, with characters and subjects which, while firmly embedded in their time, feel incredibly modern and relevant.

This version is read by Emilia Fox (who starred as Georgiana Darcy in the BBC adaptation from 1995) who does a marvellous job with it - the characters are delineated without being too over the top (apart from Mrs Bennett who is of course by nature over the top in every way), the narrative rolls along at a quick pace, there are no mistakes or errors in pronunciation.

Overall this was a joy to listen to, I was quite sad when it was over, and I will most definitely be returning to it again and again, just as I do my DVD set of the BBC production.
