Publisher's summary

"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

sublime

the best book I've done on audible. if you can get through the slow and theoretical second act, the first and third parts of the book are some of the best committed to writing

Great on many levels

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The detail of the whaling life is obvious, but the underling need for conservation is there, too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Too long to fit into my lifestyle.

Any additional comments?

A really good read/listen.

"And Jonahh... JOOONNAHHH!!!"

What made the experience of listening to Moby Dick the most enjoyable?

The Narrator was FABULOUS! I listened to the sermon of the priest over and over again, just because of the power that the narrator brought to it.

What does William Hootkins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accents, the voices, the thrill. A powerful voice perfect to convey the dark depths of the mad sea and its men.

first time making it through

the performance was an amazing! I feel like this book is lost in most children who are required to read it, probably could do without the huge middle section.

Long winded Poetic writing

I have always wanted to read this book. Though the 12 hours seemed daunting I knew that audible was the only way it was going to happen. Like many classics of its time there are sections that are irrelevant and rather boring but the narrator is amazing at his voices and inflection and keeps my interest. I would recommend this recording to anyone that had a desire to read this book.

great narrator

The narrator is fantastic! He made the story come alive. There was more to the story than just the hunt for the whale, and the narrator had a great way of drawing in and together all the parts of the story.
