Story
For centuries the gospels have been cherished devotional literature, and under the guidance of preachers and priests, they’ve been understood as reliable depictions of Jesus. But even the most devout Christians stumble across sayings of Jesus that don’t sound quite right. In fact - if we’re honest - some of them are alarming. But the problem won’t go away, even if many of the faithful file these troublesome texts in a mental drawer marked “Too uncomfortable to think about”. In fact, the problem is much larger than many people suppose.

The Jesus movement of the '70s was a heady time. It was a time of Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. It was a time of the Doobie Brothers telling us that “Jesus Is Just Alright with Me”, and Norman Greenbaum singing about a “Spirit in the Sky”. It was a time when Jesus was going to return any day, according to the best-selling book The Late Great Planet Earth. It was a time of the Rapture, Armageddon, and the Antichrist. This explosive work of history unearths clues that finally demonstrate the truth about one of the world's great religions: that it was born out of the conflict between the Romans and messianic Jews who fought a bitter war with each other during the first century. The Romans employed a tactic they routinely used to conquer and absorb other nations: they grafted their imperial rule onto the religion of the conquered.

Story
The scholarship of theology and religion teaches us that the God of the Bible was without a body, only revealing himself in the Old Testament in words mysteriously uttered through his prophets, and in the New Testament in the body of Christ. The portrayal of God as corporeal and masculine is seen as merely metaphorical, figurative, or poetic. But, in this revelatory study, Francesca Stavrakopoulou presents a vividly corporeal image of God: a human-shaped deity who walks and talks and weeps and laughs, who eats, sleeps, feels, and breathes, and who is undeniably male.

Publisher's Summary
Seth Andrews wasn't an idiot during his 30 years as an evangelical Christian. He wasn't unintelligent, nor did his IQ shift when he ultimately left religion entirely. He considered himself thoughtful, moral, reasonable, and at least as smart as the average person. In other words, he wasn't an idiot. Yet strangely, he often sounded like one.
In any other context, Christians would likely smirk, scoff, or recoil at many of their "normal" beliefs and practices, reenacted Easter crucifixions, eating monthly communion "flesh", singing hymns about being washed in blood, and the embrace of a Bible containing scripture verses about golden hemorrhoids, apocalypse dragons, and human sacrifice, So what gives?
Are these notions embraced only because they're familiar? Do they make any sense? And, do they cause otherwise reasonable people to sound like idiots?
Seth Andrews admits that, for himself, the answer was a definite "yes". For everyone else? Listen to the audiobook and decide.

good listen
I loved the original speech this book expanded on, and the book did not disappoint. It is nice hear a common sense look at all the parts of Christianity society seems afraid to question.
All while being respectful to believers, just not ignoring the many problematic aspects of beliefs themselves. Bonus that Seth is an excellent narrator.

Ok, first thing I have to mention is Mr. Andrews voice. I like it when an author reads their own work, but Seth brings it to a whole new level. Very pleasant voice on a long ride. I recently began the process of deconversion and this book gave more reasons to believe I am making the right decision. Perfect balance of outrage, humor and common sense.

I’m done being an idiot
This book points out the foolishness of Christians. The language is easy to follow and is relatable and I think it’s a very helpful tool that Christian and atheists alike can learn from while enjoying sophisticated humor which keeps things interesting and flowing it doesn’t get boring and drawn out, stale or dull kept my interest. In fact, as soon as it finished I quickly started it over. Each listen brings out new thoughts, insights, and points of view that may have not been completely apparent during a prior listen. Seth Andrews is more or less a genius and delivers his book very strongly and clearly. Thanks Mr. Andrews for this wonderful work

Entertaining and Enlightening (No Pun Intended)
I have all 4 of Seth's books on Audible, and this one is my 2nd favorite (my first being "Deconverted", which is one of my all-time favorite audiobooks and one of the few I've listened to multiple times). His presentation his excellent, and the material in-depth and informative. I especially like that he included the audio of his speech with the same name, which had been uploaded to YouTube years ago, as part of this audiobook.

An Intelligent Eargasm
The uncomfortable truth of leaving faith, spoken in mellifluous tones with great humor.
It really is possible to leave behind irrationality, but it is humbling (and humiliating) to look back through clearer lenses at what we used to be like.
Also, what about donated organs from believers during the rapture? Do they just drag along their hosts, or do they get torn free for their reassembly in heaven?
A delightful book, if sometimes an uncomfortable mirror.

An excellent account
Seth has a true grasp on the subject and understands the troubling account of the Christian doctrine that causes so much mental anguish driven by fear. Seth draws on his own experience and sharp insight to provide solid reasoning and more than a little wry humour to bring a clear focus as to why Christianity is so flawed and promotes so much hysteria. Great work Seth keep them coming
