The voice acting in this book is phenomenal. It definitely grips you, and you just want to listen to more.

Author working out his bullying trauma

The whole first third of this book is just dragging out the whole "MC was bullied unfairly" trope in a way that feels like the author is venting and working through his own bullying traumas. He's literally beating this dead horse for hours. 99% of other books I have read can get this concept of the MC's backstory/character trait/trauma through to the audience in a chapter or two, but here, its been hours. I dont know if I'm going to be able to keep listening much longer. The author is extremely verbose, and I keep waiting for something to happen, but its just more bullying. I heard this is a good book, and maybe it is if you can stick it out through the beginning, but this is TOUGH to keep listening to. And with how long this has dragged out, I worry for the rest of the books.

I feel like I'm somehow supposed to give the author a virtual hug or something to get the story to move forward off of this 4+ hour (I haven't reached the end of it) long "The MC is being unfairly bullied" arc.

edit: stupid audible has erased this section twice now because my phone changed orientation... argh!

So i finished the 6 hour "bullying prologue", and got another 3-4 hours into the meat of the story and I think I'm done. The MC is oblivious and dumb. His dialog reminds me of a virtue signaling, white knight, forum posting SJW to the point that I groan with half of his lines /thoughts. The author's style is too verbose for me and often feels like he's beating a dead horse.

The narration is great, and I think the plot has solid potential, but personally, I can't listen to the MC without arguing with/complaining to the recording, out loud, which makes me look insane. I find him annoying and I think the author is using his obliviousness as a plot tool, which is frustrating for me. You don't start with above average and almost super human intelligence and wisdom respectively and still walk around as a clueless idiot.

To give you an idea of my taste, as all reviews are colored by the critics taste:

Other books I didn't care for: Wandering inn, double blind, ripple system and a few others that I found too slow, had annoying MCs, or were irritating for similar reasons as above. I'm also not a fan of weak and/or beta male protagonists, as I find them unbelievable.

Books i do like: defiance of the fall, hwfwm, primal hunter, unbound, ashborn primordial, path of ascension, 1% lifesteal, the first great game, and hundreds more.

Hope this helps y'all and steers those who would like this book towards it, and those who wouldn't elsewhere.

the character building and story development

This is a great pickup if you have gotten any of the other books. I enjoy multi-books like this so you don't have to switch titles every book, and that was a lot before. The story grabbed me and kept me engaged throughout the series, and I have listened to the series multiple times. I can't wait for more to be put on Audible! 📚📖🎧🤩 #Books #Series #Audible #Story

Never change Wes Malcolm

Im not going to lie my favorite series of all time. If you want more audio book as of 08/28/25 you can follow the kickstarter to help what audible screwed up back in book 2. The Narration Jessica Threet and Christopher Boucher put in is next level.The emotions the two put into this series made me laugh cry and shout for joy more than any book I've read before. The way the author goes about dealing with trauma and abuse is secound to none. The action is all amazing and just keeps getting more epic as the books go on. Some of the best side characters in any story. This had probably my second favorite power system after Unbound. The way he explains how stats work makes so much more sense than 90% of all other litrpg syatems.
Please help support the author.

Third time listen to these books. because Nathan A thompson is doing a kickstarter on Facebook rn, I thought why not, ill buy this 3 in 1 and re listen to them. and I absolutely still love all 3 books. really hoping he can rise enough money to fund the next 3 like he's trying to do! ive seen a few people pledge 1k, and that right there should tell you how much people love these books! is currently we are at about 16k out of 18k that is needed for the next 3 books! so looks like we're gonna make it, and thats all in just the first day. so if your considering buying this, id give it a chance. ive been waiting years for the next audio books, im so hype for this!

Great characters and greater story

The voice actors absolutely nailed it, bringing a haunting and thrilling energy that makes the story hit even harder. The characters are written with real depth, and it sets the perfect tone for how the rest of the series is going to unfold. The cast does an amazing job of pulling you in, and the villain (name withheld for spoilers) actually sounds terrifying, which makes every moment with him that much more intense. Overall, it’s a fantastic mix of great performances, a gripping story, and a rock-solid foundation for what’s to come.

Excellent story and character development. Loved the narration from both narrators. I cannot wait for the next book to be available on audible.
