Publisher's summary
Can it ever get better? This is the question Benjamin Watson is asking. In a country aflame with the fallout from the racial divide - in which Ferguson, Charleston, and the Confederate flag dominate the national news, daily seeming to rip the wounds open ever wider - is there hope for honest and healing conversation? For finally coming to understand each other on issues that are ultimately about so much more than Black and White?
An NFL tight end for the New Orleans Saints and a widely read and followed commentator on social media, Watson has taken the Internet by storm with his remarkable insights about some of the most sensitive and charged topics of our day. Now, in Under Our Skin, Watson draws from his own life, his family legacy, and his role as a father to sensitively and honestly examine both sides of the race debate and appeal to the power and possibility of faith as a step toward healing.

The belief that all lives matter is at the heart of our founding documents - but we must admit that this conviction has never truly reflected reality in America. America's problem with race has deep roots, with the country's foundation tied to the near extermination of one race of people and the enslavement of another. Racism is truly our nation's original sin. "It's time we right this unacceptable wrong", says best-selling author and leading Christian activist Jim Wallis. Fifty years ago, Wallis was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered dealing with racism to be taboo.

Though the host of MSNBC's PoliticsNation is as fiery and outspoken as ever about the events and issues that matter most, he's learned that the only way we can get right as a nation is by getting right from within. In this, his first book in over a decade, Rev Al will take you behind the scenes of some unexpected places - from officiating Michael Jackson's funeral, hanging out with Jay-Z and President Barack Obama at the White House, to taking charge of the Trayvon Martin case.

Story
Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove grew up in the Bible Belt in the American South as a faithful church-going Christian. But he gradually came to realize that the gospel his Christianity proclaimed was not good news for everybody. The same Christianity that sang, "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound" also perpetuated racial injustice and white supremacy in the name of Jesus. His Christianity, he discovered, was the religion of the slaveholder. Just as Reconstruction after the Civil War worked to repair a desperately broken society, compromised Christianity requires a spiritual reconstruction.

And yet, there are many in the church who want to call them good, even as America begins to unravel under their influence. In Eraced, John Amanchukwu Sr. dispels the myths surrounding abortion and critical race theory, and uncovers the Left's sinister plot to destroy the Black community and divide the church. Along the way, he brings to light important gospel truths to help all believers learn to think biblically about some of the most important and explosive issues of our day.

Incredibly Insightful For A White Woman From The Suburbs
This book was so insightful to me as a white woman who knows nothing about the perspective of being black in this country. I feel naive to the inclusiveness I felt we all had, and ignorant to the issues black Americans have to deal with. Though it was sometimes hard for me to hear, I am thankful to Benjamin for having the courage to write it and teaching us that Jesus Christ is the only real way we are going to experience true change within ourselves. I wish ALL my friends and family, black and white, would read this book.

A Must Read for Everyone
What did you love best about Under Our Skin?
The candid exploration of race in America and from the from the various views of everyone involved. The acknowledgement that we can't fix the sin that caused the problem but that God can.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Ben Watson for his introspective revelations of his own prejudice and his attempts to view the issues from all perspectives. He brings an objectivity to an issue that is so entrenched in an "us and them" mentality.
What does JD Jackson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The reader brings the words to life with a depth and emotion that vividy reflect the joy, sorrow, and gravity of each moment.
If you could give Under Our Skin a new subtitle, what would it be?
