Publisher's Summary

Dead mothers, missing husbands, disgusting dates, perverted "reverends" seductive gurus, infamous ingrates, and cheese thieves. These are just a few of the cast of characters that pepper Valerie Gilbert's true tales in Raving Violet.

Enter the world of a solitary but intrepid New Yorker. Orphaned as a young adult, this divorced, smartass metaphysician has sought solace and insight from philosophers, seances, channels and mediums: a path that has, inevitably, led her back to her formidable fortress within.

Join Valerie as she scales the castle walls on her journey for love, sex, sass, a chuckle, and really good chocolate. Love and Loss! Love and Glory! Love and Nausea! Raving Violet has it all.

So much more...

Where does Raving Violet rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

#1

Which character – as performed by Valerie Gilbert – was your favorite?

Valerie!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes...it took two. :)

Any additional comments?

I loved this book. Yes, it’s loads of fun…it’s all that the Publisher’s Summary says that it is. But it’s so much more.
Valerie bares her soul while recounting her life’s journey and the stories that have shaped who she perceives herself to be. But these are more than “stories”—all good books are. They are treasures pulled out of hiding places and laid out in the sun; they are sparkling with life and promise and wisdom of times past and futures coming. They are gems conveying our very human shortcomings and imperfections, but allowing us to see life as beautiful, full of potential, and bursting with soul-stretching possibilities. Ultimately, that is what this book is—an outlet for a soul to share its very human self with others who walk similar paths. With others who struggle to live their truths in this linear world... who seek, who falter, and who continue to wonder of what they are truly capable.
Valerie’s book is indefinable in such a perfect way, much like the city from which she hails. Her stories are entertaining in and of themselves—I laughed and I cried and I wanted more. But perhaps more importantly, they are imbued—quite naturally—with challenges to expand ourselves, with metaphysical teachings and lessons, and with gentle guidance to find a new way. Through Valerie’s willingness to share herself and her perspectives, I experienced my own “aha” moments. What could be better? Bravo, Valerie! (And on your audio recording, too. The theater is lucky to have you.)

A great memoir

Loved this memoir.

Having the story narrated by the author added another level of connection to the listener. The use of emphasis and voices, made it even more real. I love how honest and raw this book is. I had no idea what it was about going in, but the reviews and the sample intrigued enough. What an great surprise. I can relate to so many things in this story. It was like talking to an old friend, I hadn't seen in a long time.

Raving Violet Rocks the World

Wow. Thank you all so much for opening and helping to heal my heart. Your stories voice and experiences shook the stone from in front of my heart. It's lovely to finally hear real news about my life. About what is real and what is fake. What I need to take care of as long as I am on this wheel of suffering as I like to say, EXCEPT when I hear stories that rock my world with light, laughter and fun. Thank you....

Stunning

When I started to divulge into this book I thought it was just going to be a series of rants, and in some cases it was. However, more than anything it is a snapshot of a real woman's life as she grows and navigates through herself in the world. It's funny, it's humble, it's humiliatingly honest, and it was a joy.

Her journey just might inspire yours

Life and losses are serious business until one turns it on it's ear and learns to deal with it all with wry wit. There are lots of laughs here, and a lot to learn from the author's spiritual journey. I was fortunate to be able to have it on audio, read by the author (truly fantastic this way). Besides giving you a lot of laughs, this book will give you a whole lot to think about.

Buy this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. First of all, it is narrated by the author… something I love (no narrator can inflect the thoughts and emotions quite like the person who wrote it). With that being said, the narration was flawless. Valerie is well spoken, clear and engaging throughout the whole performance.

With regards to the content of the book, I loved the stories. As they were real life stories, I found them captivating. Some were hilarious, some made you annoyed (because you will no doubt have had the same experience), but all of them were excellent!

Overall, this is a great book that you should definitely read. In the words of the author – “Don’t postpone joy.” Pick up this book!

This Was An Awesome Listen, Loved It!

I enjoyed listening to RAVING VIOLET so much that I had a hard time turning it off to go to sleep. It was filled with life experiences with people she knew, exploring spirituality and the metaphysical. I also always love when I find someone else who reads the Sedona Journal of Emergence. Much, rather ( ALL) of Valerie's book resonated with me at that level. I love the way she calls out the phony psychics. I especially loved the part at the end where she meets with the medium who DID communicate with her mother.

VALERIE GILBERT is an Awesome writer and I suspect she's a pretty cool person. I agree that the other world is right here alongside us. Perhaps not visible but they let us know in their own way.

A few places I bookmarked were where she talked about love being our new baseline, how the heart chakra will be the new root, and above the heart, there'll be a turquoise truth chakra. Also, don't talk about it; be about it, and that she's a spiritual adventurer.

She hands down does a great job narrating her own book. I'd definitely recommend listening to her.

Audiobook received for my honest review.
