Publisher's Summary

Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible. Building a mind so strong would take years of effort and discipline, but it would propel Kastor to the pinnacle of running - to American records in every distance from the 5K to the marathon - and to the accomplishment of earning America’s first Olympic medal in the marathon in 20 years.

Let Your Mind Run is a fascinating, intimate look inside the mind of an elite athlete, a remarkable story of achievement, and an insightful primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can give anyone a competitive edge.

Critic Reviews

"Inspiring, fascinating and insightful... Some inspirational books make you feel, 'Wow, I could never do that.' Let Your Mind Run makes you feel, 'Wow, I can be better today.' By focusing on the mind game, Kastor and Hamilton make this book practical for anyone trying to overcome the biggest impediments to climbing that next hill of growth." (Shawn Achor, New York Times best-selling author of The Happiness Advantage and Big Potential)

"Engaging... [ Let Your Mind Run] is a gift to all who are passionate about running and who seek to find balance with mental conditioning... A heartfelt and impressive memoir from one of America's treasured runners." (Booklist)

“There are running legends, and then there's Deena Kastor. I've always looked to Deena for inspiration in racing and in life. What she has accomplished is incredible, but how she's done it is fascinating. In her captivating new memoir, Kastor takes us on a run through her psyche so we can learn from a true master. Let Your Mind Run will fine tune your mindset for optimal performance both on and off the road!” (Scott Jurek, champion ultrarunner and New York Times best-selling author of Eat and Run)

I've always admired Deena Kastor. Afer reading this book i admire her even more!!! I loved reading her story, hearing her perspective on racing. She has amazing mental strength and was able to reach her peak performance by changing the way she talked to herself and the way she reacted to negativity. She's a total badass!! I'm so inspired.I cant wait to incorporate her methods into my training. this book will make you want to go for a long run, it'll make you want to push yourself to the next level. Thank you Deena!!!

Great book

If you ever seen Deena Kastor, she seems to smile A LOT. After reading the book, I now know that the smile reflects her way of thinking. I am not a positive thinking person. Sometimes I get put off by people who are overly positive. But that says more about me than it does about them. The thing I discovered in this book is that I could be positive, too. In my running. In the way I interact with people. In the way I live my life. I’m kind of an old fart, but I’m also willing to try new things that will make my life hopefully more enjoyable. This is a very enjoyable book, even if you don’t run. I would highly recommend it. Thanks, Ms. Kastor. Great job!

Impactful, inspiring, and beautifully written!

What an amazing book. hard to stop listening to. I heard Deanna at Dr. Radio Sirius XM' orthopedic show. her passion came through her voice. As a holistic health and personal trainer, I help transform people's lives so that they can as well have energy and health to do what they follow. Mindset, vision, values, attitude, positivism, and goals are essential to a successful journey. I am always looking for ways I can get this message across to my clients. I thought this book could be great for one of the clients I've started to work with since she was also an athlete. Immediately after the show, I head to Amazon, read a couple of reviews, bought it, and started to listen. wow, I thought. this book is a perfect fit for that one client and about anyone alive...of course, as long as they are willing to receive the information through a growth mindset. I finished the book very quickly, record time actually. I will be listening to it, for sure. I absolutely LOVE IT. It spoke to my heart, experiences, learnings, and teachings. It made me cry, laugh, envision, think, reflect on ways I push myself to be a better person and coach to my clients. it's about the value I add. I also enjoy 'travelling/running' with Deanna as beautifully described her journeys with nuggets of personal growth opportunities. I can tell this book was written from the heart and with the purpose to inspire and change people's lives. thank you for sharing your story. congratulations for your accomplishments. all the best!

Really enjoyed this story and message

I really enjoyed this book. The story of Deena's running career along with the growth of her positive outlook and mental toughness had me glued to each chapter. This story is also read by Deena and you get her personal inflections throughout the book at the key points.

It works

Loved this book. I used the positive thinking strategies she outlined in a recent marathon and was able to push through what had been challenging miles in the past.

So positive & uplifting!

I just love Deena after reading her book! She did a great job reading it for the audio book! It reads like a story (so it’s really entertaining) but she includes many pieces of knowledge that would be worth taking notes on.
I want to go back and read it again or maybe save it for my next taper before a race to get mentally strong.
