Publisher's Summary

In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning. This is not merely a travel guide; it is a beautifully written and highly personal view into one man’s journey and the insights gained by abandoning what is comfortable and routine.

What the Critics Say

"David Miller’s AWOL makes you feel the pain and joy of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike.... In vivid colors, David paints a picture of his memorable journey." (Larry Luxenberg Director of the Appalachian Trail Museum)

    "Inspiring"

Listened to 2 times. Visited Harper's Ferry while working out of town. Hiked the C & O trail accidently, but while lost saw tons of monuments from the Civil War which gave me a lot insight on those soldiers lives before and after if they lived. After about 18 miles I ended up in boonsboro. My first hike and I could only take baby steps I was so sore.Anyhow. The following week I went back to Harper's Ferry and did enter the AT. I hikes approx 10 miles slept in a shelter by myself, hiked back to Harper's Ferry and my truck. Now I just listened to AWOL for 2nd time and I want to make a thru hike in 2018. I'm very inspired to go. If its calling you, then go. Right?

Thoroughly enjoyable and an excellent story of something we probably should all do. The mental images created let you take the hike along with the author.

"Great listen but very foul language used towards the end. "

I really enjoyed the story but when you have to use the F word 5 times in a row to let listeners know what an old fart is saying about not carrying a knife is appallingly. I get the point when you tell us he uses the F word 5 times telling me what a fool you were not to have one, I get the point. I have my granddaughter in the car with me when I listen to these stories and I had hoped this one was not R-rated. I would have given it a 5 star for the the story if not for this.

    "what a wonderful book/story."

one would not think that a book about hiking would be interesting. this one is. maybe the difference is talent the book takes about 12 hours to listen to. it never gets boring. part of this may have to do with my own wanderlust ? my own traveling adventures ? in any case if you ever thought what it would be like to hike over 2,000 miles, this will give you an idea ! it's about the AT. the appellation trail. the really long hike from georgia to maine. if you do not have a sense of adventure, the need to escape the ordinary - then this book/ story may not be for you ? to me it was a page turner !

"I'm Sure a Few AT Hikes Started with this Book!"

Definitely a must-read for anyone with a passing interest in hiking the AT. It's extremely well-written - humorous, yet at the same time informative. I've hiked parts of the trail and found the descriptions spot-on.

    "excellent read!"

A very interesting well narrated book about hiking the Appalachian trail. Even though the book explains the unpleasantries of hiking so far, it is still inspirational and makes you wonder if you yourself could accomplish it.

I loved davids account of his travels on the trail, amongst the best diary stories I've read in a very long while, a hearty well done.
