From the multi-million copy bestselling author comes a chilling tale about life flashing before your eyes—including terrifying scenes you don’t remember.

When Damon survives a near-drowning, his life flashes before his eyes. Every memory is crystal clear—except one. A dead boy. A face he can’t place. A moment he doesn’t remember living. At first he tells himself it’s a trick of the mind. But everything else he saw was real. So why not this?

With his waking life stalked by the disturbing scene, confusion quickly turns to obsession. Desperate for answers, Damon digs into his fractured past, and becomes convinced that the only way to remember…is to die again. And again. And again. When he meets a perfect stranger who’s all too willing to help, the stage is set for his dice with death.

But if this is what it takes to uncover the truth, maybe some memories are better left buried…

I normally enjoy John Marrs but this I could not say I did. I finished it, but its unrelenting misery, suffering and depression with no redeeming light. Not a happy book.

Unrelenting misery

I absolutely loved Dead in the Water—John Marrs hooked me right from the opening chapter and never let up. This is peak psychological thriller: dark, obsessive, full of buried secrets, and loaded with twists that kept me guessing and genuinely shocked the whole way through. The premise is killer—a man haunted by a forgotten memory after a near-drowning—and the story builds into something truly unhinged and unforgettable. Multiple POVs, short punchy chapters, and revelations that hit like whiplash... I couldn't put it down (or stop listening).
The audiobook narration is wonderful overall—the voices (Will Watt, Elizabeth Knowelden, and Debra Michaels) bring the characters' emotions and tension to vivid life. My one minor gripe: in a few quieter scenes, the volume drops so low that I had to rewind and max out the sound to catch every word. It was frustrating in those moments, but it didn't detract from how gripping the performance and story were once I adjusted.
If you're into mind-bending thrillers with massive "wow" moments, this is an absolute must. John Marrs has another winner here—highly recommend!
