Publisher's summary

After learning how to use magic and fighting vampires, anyone would be bored going back to normal college life. As if that wasn’t enough, Jen didn’t realize how hard it would be to tiptoe around her nonmagic family and friends. She can’t even talk to her familiar, Rak, without making sure no one else is around! Worst of all, Jen misses the friends she made over the summer. Aside from Rak, they’re the only other magics she knows, and she hasn’t seen them in almost five months!

Jen is all too happy to accept an invitation to go skiing with the gang. She gears up for two weeks of snow, magic, and fun. Just when everything seems to be going great, an uninvited guest turns up. Soon, the skiers aren’t the only things going downhill.

Jen thought that vampires were just about the most dangerous thing the magical world could throw at her. Unfortunately, she’s about to learn that people with no magic at all can be just as deadly....

Fun characters and a very exciting plot

This is the second full-length novel in the More than Magic series of new adult urban fantasy by Elizabeth Kirke. It’s a complete story that can be enjoyed on its own, although I do recommend reading the entire series in order.

I love how this book starts out with warm, cozy scenes of a group of friends enjoying a ski vacation together, laughing and teasing each other and enjoying meals around a fire. Then the author slowly ratchets up the tension until I was so anxious to know what happens next, it was hard to put the book down. Who will live and who will die? What will the long-term consequences be of difficult choices?

I love these characters, and the rich magical world the author has created. There’s a lot of humor and very sweet scenes between the various characters, but also incredible action and suspense.

The audiobook production was excellent, and I loved Starla Huchton’s narration. She has good pacing and pronunciation, distinctive voices and speech patterns to suit each character, and the ability to convey mood and emotion effectively. The story works very well as an audiobook.

Fantastic job by Starla Huchton!

In Snow Bound, we learn that Jen must keep her new skills as a witch a secret from all non-magic people. She has been unable to share her experiences with her family, most notably her cousin, Shannon. Understandably Jen is very excited to be going on a ski vacation with Charlie, Danio, Marianna, TS, Thomas, and Ember. Finally, she won't have to hide who she really is and she can explore her feelings for Thomas. Of course their vacation is interrupted by the werewolf renting a house next door with his non-magic girlfriend, a stalker, and then Shannon shows up unexpectedly to add more chaos to the mix. The gang must defend themselves from the werewolf as well as an unknown attacker all while trying to hide their powers from Shannon. Shannon is too smart for her own good and this is where the mayhem begins. Snow Bound was even better than Semester Abroad.

I L-O-V- E this series from Elizabeth Kirke! The narrator, Starla Huchton is phenomenal! Despite having previously read the book, I still found myself holding my breath during the intense scenes. Huchton added a new life to the already well-written characters. Snow Bound is a story that I could listen to over and over.

non magic

Jen meets up with her magic friends on a ski trip and after her cousin's trip falls through she surprises Jen. So Jen and the gang have to act non magical. When things happen (not to spoil) Shannon learns more than anyone wants her to know.

Intense!

The second installment in the More Than Magic series is my favorite so far! It picks up a few months after the first story left off with Jen and her familiar Rack on their way to meet up with Jen’s magic friends and vampire crush, Thomas for a ski trip. One thing I really love about this series so far is that it follows one couple and their magical friend group and builds on those relationships rather than jumping from one couple to another in each book. This book gets a little more romantic and a lot more intense than the last installment. Just when Jen and Thomas make it official, Jen’s non-magic cousin Shannon comes along and throws a wrench in the group’s plans followed by a rule-breaking shifter, which the MES agents obviously can’t ignore! The narrator does an excellent job portraying it all - I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I can’t wait to listen to the next book!
