When 17-year-old Kai is exposed as a female sorceress, a moonburner, she knows the punishment is death. Despite the odds against her, Kai escapes her fate and undertakes a harrowing journey to a land where moonburners are revered and trained as warriors.

But the moonburner citadel is not the place of refuge and learning that Kai imagined. The ongoing war against the male sorcerers, or sunburners, has led the citadel leadership down a dark path that could spell the end of all magic. Armed with a secret from her past and a handsome but dangerous ally in the sunburner prince, Kai may be the only one able to prevent the destruction of her people.

This story grips you from the beginning to the end every moment is amazing. The characters seem very real and full of life. Feels like there should be yet another book in this and I hope there is. I highly enjoyed this book and glad I was able to listen to this. The narrator did an amazing job as well.

Any additional comments?

Amazing Story. The narrator Emma Lysy was hard to follow at first. The narrator grew on me as she grew into her character. I couldn’t get into the story the first chapter or so and had to keep rewinding it because I just couldn’t get into it. After the desert scene I started to get wrapped up more and more into this intriguing story. This is a wonderful story about Kai, a strong female lead who in her first 17 years of life has to pretend to be a boy. Girls who are born as Moonburners are killed by the king of the sunburners. The story unfolds amazingly and there are many twists and turns. When she is found out to be a Moonburner she is sent to wander the desert naked and alone with no water. During this her sieshen, Quitsu appears. I loved the bonding of animals to burners and the meaning of it for them. The biggest downfall to this story was that it too SO LONG for anything to really spark at all with Kai and Hiro. But the storyline will drive you on but if you are looking for a story with any romance in it this is not for you. But overall the story was amazing. I loved all the secrets that you get to see unfold and the creatures you get to meet. Overall I recommend this book and audiobook highly! It was a pleasure to listen to.

This book is brilliant and I feel like the narrator perfectly captured the spirit of the story and characters. I didn't want it to end so when I head "Epilogue" I was excited and sad. I definitely want to continue this series!

I really enjoyed this book! It was well balanced and I loved the female characters-both good and bad. I am pretty picky about narrators and I liked this one for the most part. Her "male" character voices weren't amazing but they could have been much worse. I would definitely recommend this to fantasy lovers.
