Publisher's Summary

The story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III rise to fame, through his dragon-training exploits, told in Hiccup's own words by David Tennant.

Hiccup was a truly extraordinary Viking Hero, Warrior chieftain, awesome sword-fighter and amateur naturalist. He was known throughout Vikingdom as 'the Dragon Whisperer' on account of his power over these terrifying beasts. But it wasn't always like that....

Worth It for David Tennant

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Overall, yes. Would I rather have listened to David Tennant read something more to my tastes? Yes. However, this is what was to-hand. The book itself runs a bit too much to gross humor and I'm not really comfortable with the lack of women in it. The movie actually much improved on the story.

What could Cressida Cowell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

How about some female characters? How about Toothless not being terrifying, rather than the adorable dragon in the film? I also thought the Vikings were pretty hard to sympathize with, and I think I was meant to feel for their plight. If you like gross humor and violence of the sort to appeal to kids, though, have at it.

What does David Tennant bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was everything to the story for me. I would not have liked this without his narration. He does great accents and brings a lot of emotion and humor into the novel.

Did How to Train Your Dragon inspire you to do anything?

Does scouring the internet for David Tennant gifs count?

Any additional comments?

As much as I loved Tennant's narration, I didn't like it to buy any more of the audiobooks in the series. If they were freely available at my library, yes, but not for money.

Love the story, love the narration!

Where does How to Train Your Dragon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I am an eight year old boy and this is my favourite series by far. I absolutely love it! We have read all the books, seen the movie but I still love to hear the narrator's voice. I cannot wait for all the books to come out on Audible. You and your kids will love this book!

Listening to the book beat watching the movie

If you could sum up How to Train Your Dragon in three words, what would they be?

entertaining, encouraging, educational?

What other book might you compare How to Train Your Dragon to and why?

The Hero's Guild to Saving your Kingdom.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes, the narration was excellent for the greater majority of the story, but it was agreed that Toothless was annoying rather than endearing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

When the manual doesn't help you, it is time to write one of your own.

Any additional comments?

It was much better to listen to the book in the car on a road trip than hearing the movie replay three or four times. It had a similar underdog story, so my kids could listen with out being boarded. Yet they knew the characters.

A heartwarming funny bloodthirsty scottish frolic

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator conveys a delightful sense of the unlikely relationship between a dragon and a boy. As in all the best kid's stories the grown ups come across as clueless and the bigger bullying boys as morons. Although the listener knows a happy ending is inevitable, there are still some twists and turns, battles and obstacles that keep the story moving. Above all - it is funny. My 10 year old turned up his nose and said the story was too young for him and then listened agog all the way through.

What does David Tennant bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His natural Scottish accent! He moderates it to adapt to all the characters and his stuttering Toothless the dragon is just adorable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh. A lot.

Any additional comments?

Worth it just for David Tennant. And the dragon-potty-training scene!

Charming and with Great Narration!

What did you love best about How to Train Your Dragon?

It is a charming and witty story. As a warning, if you read this expecting to get the movie then you are going to be disappointed. Dreamworks really took it upon themselves to change things when they made their film but that isn't to say that the book is bad. It is the original thing after all. I really liked it and will look into continuing the series.

What about David Tennant’s performance did you like?

David Tennant was superb at putting emotion and inflection into his voice as he spoke. His voice was neither dull or monotone but instead really moved with the story. He tried to make each character have their own unique voice and for the most part he really succeded. I loved him.

Fabulous series (and David Tennant is Awesome)

Would you consider the audio edition of How to Train Your Dragon to be better than the print version?

Having read the print books (yes, my kid has those too!) aloud rather a lot, Tennant manages to iron out some of the not-quite-rolling-off-the-tongue aspects of the style.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

To reach for the next book.

What about David Tennant’s performance did you like?

David Tennant does all the character voices - makes you feel like you're a kid again.

Any additional comments?

Great for big and little kids!

Being a hero the hard way!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! I think that any one at any age can relate to this book. It's a great story about building character and how to build honor not by your actions or being strong but staying true to yourself and following your gut.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hiccup was my favorite character. I admired how he stood calm in all situations even though he may have been afraid on the inside. He proved that true wit is more useful than strength.

What about David Tennant’s performance did you like?

I loved his accent and the different inflections he used in his voice. You could hear that he was really invested in the story and he kept you listening to every word.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Being a hero the hard way!

Any additional comments?

LOVED IT! Really a true pleasure to listen to! I am 24 years old and I think that this story is good for any one. There were a lot of great characters and the story ended differently than you typically expect from a tale of a legend.
