Jason was a little short on creds, so he decided to get his mind scanned. It seemed like a good idea at the time: Get paid to license a copy of your mind for use in one of the numerous machines that run society. What could go wrong? Turns out, a lot. Jason wakes up in the middle of the radioactive wasteland that was created 50 years ago when aliens destroyed half the Earth. He has no idea why he's here, or what the hell he's supposed to do. Worst of all, he's no longer human.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Buried deep in the rugged Alaskan wilderness lies a secret that could alter the future of mankind - a secret that billionaire Elizabeth Grey has invested millions in solving. But when the dig goes silent, an elite team of battle-hardened military contractors is brought in led by former Marine Max Ahlgren. While the mission to make contact and rescue a team of scientists and engineers working on an “archeological” project seems like an easy payday, once on ground, the team discovers the grizzly truth that this is no ordinary rescue.

Publisher's Summary
Antibiotics. They have failed. All that's left are the Strains - bacteria so strong, they have brought the world to its knees. But humanity has fought on, carving out pockets of civilization in a wasteland known as the Sicklands, creating the super high-tech Clean Nation cities.
From the cities, GenSOF has been born - Genetic Special Forces Operations. An elite military branch of the government that enlists men and women with specific genetic anomalies that allow them to be hosts to bacteria that even the Strains cannot defeat. Under the watchful eye of Control, GenSOF protects the Clean Nation cities from the ever-encroaching Strains and the diseased inhabitants of the Sicklands.
But now, Control has other plans for GenSOF, and possibly the Clean Nation cities themselves, and it is up to the operators of GenSOF Zebra Squad, and their cloned Canine Units known as bug hounds, to find out what those plans are.
Or die trying.

Pretty Cool Story
In the future, bacterial germs have wiped out most of humanity. People live in small cities, separated by hundreds of miles of wasteland. The cities are filled with sterilization technology to prevent anyone from contracting illnesses, leading to mild paranoia and prudishness. Meanwhile, some poor souls inhabit the wastelands, struggling to survive. The only interaction between the groups occurs when a rare breed of people with specific immunities, who are recruited to a special forces unit, venture outside the cities on missions.
This story has a unique spin on the apocalypse, and humanity’s attempt to reclaim the planet. There is plenty to enjoy in this story, though it isn’t my favorite Jake Bible book. Still, I am intrigued by the series and will continue it.
Joel Richards does a solid job narrating this story. I particularly like how he voices the AI characters.
