Originally developed for the treatment of borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, has rapidly become one of the most popular and most effective treatments for all mental health conditions rooted in out-of-control emotions. However, there are limited resources for psychologists seeking to use DBT skills with individual clients. In the tradition of ACT Made Simple, DBT Made Simple provides clinicians with everything they need to know to start using DBT in the therapy room.

Story
People who have experienced a traumatic event may feel a wide range of emotions, such as anxiety, anger, fear, and depression. The truth is that there is no right or wrong way to react to trauma, but there are ways that they can heal from experience and uncover their own capacity for resilience, growth, and recovery. Psychotherapy is a crucial component of mental health treatment. Three of the most common approaches are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

Publisher's Summary
The pioneering originator of ACT teaches us the core principles and methods of this innovative, evidence-based model of life transformation.
Have you ever tried to "think” your way out of emotional turmoil - and ended up feeling even worse? Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) emerges from a remarkable insight: that when our normal problem-solving skills are applied to painful thoughts or feelings, suffering often increases.
Dr. Steven C. Hayes, ACT's originator and codeveloper, has found this to be true in almost every area of life's struggles. "Fortunately," he begins, "we have discovered why this is, and we have developed ways of correcting it."
For more than 30 years, ACT has been used effectively to treat not only mental and behavioral health problems such as anxiety and depression, but to help support workplace success, sports performance, weight loss, and social change. ACT works by helping us to accept and learn from our emotions, to think more freely and flexibly, and to find a liberating new perspective that allows us to take action based on what matters most to us.
Here, you will join this pioneering researcher to learn firsthand about the essentials of ACT. If you're seeking to improve your life, these sessions offer an immersive way to understand this demonstrated path to greater happiness and well-being.
Highlights:
- Session one: "Learning to Let Life Be Your Teacher"
- Session two: "Examining Your Sense of Self"
- Session three: "Opening Up to Letting Go"
- Session four: "Living Within Your Yes"
- Session five: "Coming into the Present Moment"

Good Ideas Unevenly Shared
To be sure, ACT is a theory to be taken seriously, and Steven Hayes is an expert. This particular effort has truly great moments and some good segments. And Hayes' passion and expertise and kindness are all evident. But the audiobook is marred by peculiar presentation features. Some segments are so bad that I wonder if Hayes has reached the point where being venerable means that others (producer, sound engineer, etc.) fail to provide accurate feedback, redirect, and re-record. Initially, Hayes engages in a style of speech known as puking in radio (an exaggerated affectation that serves as a parody of a particular style); that first section came out sounding like a combo of time-share sales pitch, Stuart Smalley, and satirized guru. That's not really Hayes. Someone needed to tell him, "yeah, that didn't work, and here's how you can adjust in the next take." Hayes comes closer to hitting his stride later in the audiobook -- providing compelling logic, fascinating stories, and truly engaging warmth. Still, the pace remained so ponderous that the entire audiobook needed to be experienced at 1.30 speed (his vocal timbre is so good that this worked fine). What Dr. Hayes achieves in this complicated audiobook is impressive, but he was failed by those around him resulting in that achievement being unpalatable to at least some listeners.

insightful yes, but cant get through it.
Struggled to finish, infact I didn't finish. I threw the towel in, after the "2nd session". Steven Hayes is incredibly bland at reciting his work, he sounds like he himself is struggling to get out his own material. I even put the speed to 1.10 and it was still difficult to get through.

This is a great audiobook. Get it, take notes, follow along. The narrator reading his material only makes it better. This would be a $4000-6000 course per chapter if he hadn’t made this audiobook. Not that he would charge that, but that’s been my experience with his peers.

Do you want to hear what helps or what's easy?
It's nice that someone made one of these things that ISN'T full of crap. People often get lost in their own verbal behavior simply because they haven't developed the muscles to steer the boat. This is a great starter on the topic. I also kept laughing hard at a lot of the author's anecdotes. I think he's HILARIOUS, though I am also often told things like "I get that you are trying to be funny, I just don't get it..." So maybe take that part with a grain of salt.

Great Content; Terrible Narration
I’m an avid ACT student. I own all the audiobooks that discuss the topic and have listened to each one several times. I was excited to find a new book on the topic, as I’m always eager to learn more. Despite my intense interest, I had a very hard time getting through this one because of the narration. I suspect the author wanted to use a conversational style, but I found highly distracting and even somewhat annoying. This is a shame, given how helpful I have found ACT to be for me.

Useful to me
What did you like about the book? The subject matter, the practical exercises, and the conversational style in which Dr. Hayes presented the material.
Whom would I recommend this book to? Anyone wanting to expand their toolkit to better understand themselves and live a more fulfilling life.
Why did I choose this rating? I found the subject matter extremely useful and helpful. Dr. Hayes gave great explanations of ACT, how and why to put it into practice, and a thorough explanation of how to continue developing the skills after concluding the course and where to find additional resources. The course is a great gift to humanity. His style in presenting the material was down to earth, very accessible. I didn’t feel lectured to but rather felt his sincere wish to help and provide useful information.

More mindfulness than CBT but very good
MBCT is basically 99$ mindfulness and if you're lucky 1% CBT(still very good and highly recommended). ACT is closer to a 50/50 mix The mindfulness does have some exercises I didn't already know that will wind up being helpful. There is some visualization there that's not really my thing. I'll get better at it. Since ACT is a third wave CBT, it does have some CBT in it. Where ACT and other third wave CBT's differ from is they preach acceptance of things where CBT preaches challenging them. I think the best response is actually both. Those subtle challenges and trimming the edge off of things makes them easier to accept. Defusion is a great thing to learn and is the form of acceptance usually used in all third wave CBT's but it takes time to get to that point. The commited action part of ACT makes a ton of sense and comes up in other programs. It involves you finding what's important to you and making a conscious effort to make it a part of your life. Standing up for what's right is what's important to me. That's an awfully tough thing for me to make a conscious part of my life because I tend to pay the price for this more often than not. I'm not alone in that either. It's actually pretty much an accepted part of it. This is actually the cause of most of what brought me here to begin with. If I search deeper, I might be able to find something that fits the bill without the downside. There are some other fairly useful exercises in here. I still think the best overall answer is to study mindfulness, CBT and all the different third wave versions of it and apply all the best features that the most sense to you to your life. I still don't think any one is perfect for individual.

Steven C Hayes has the most amazing voice, hr sounds so empathetic and soothing, I was thrilled to find this, especially after "The Liberated Mind" was narrated by someone else (who was actually really good, but just didn't quite have Dr Hayes's unique expressiveness).
So it was a real treat to find this online course available on Audible and it's an absolute pleasure to listen to.

WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY
This was 'By Far' the biggest waste of time I have ever spent in my life listening to this book.
The book is a complete waste of time and money. I got to the end of the book knowing absolutely nothing about the subject, but had to endure the rantings of Steven Hayes with no further increase or improvement in my knowledge of anything, besides maybe never, ever listen to his rubbish again.
I am learning about ACT and 'any' other author on this subject would have to be more informative and educational than listening to this druel.

Only get this book if you're ready to Grow Up
If you are still on a hamster wheel of looking to others to fix your issues, searching for the "thing" that will make your life "right", for a way to escape whatever was done to you in the past, then this book probably isn't for you. The narrator's style often rambles in that self indulgent American way. He doesn't try to make you like him, and at times places uncomfortable truths right in your face. But the content is powerful. He explains science based tools to change the hard wired thought patterns and behaviours that cause you to struggle. It's not neat solutions or easy promises, but it's a way forward if you are ready to grow past damage in your past. Easy to listen to and great content.
