Publisher's Summary

The devil you know is never the one you should trust.

Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the Morrigan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to Election Day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second.

But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the case: a standoffish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister. Fighting Hannah and the Dominion Sect provides Patrick with a sinister reminder that some blood ties can never be cut.

Left behind in New York City, Jonothon de Vere finds himself targeted by hunters who will go through anyone to kill him - including the packs under his protection. With a bounty on his head, Jono is forced to make a choice that Patrick would never approve of. Doing so risks breaking the trust he’s built with the man he loves, but not acting will give the rival New York City god pack leverage Jono can’t afford to give up.

When Patrick and Jono reunite in Chicago, Patrick must confront the fraying of a relationship he’s come to rely on for his own sanity. But fixing their personal problems will have to wait - because Niflheim is clawing at the shores of Lake Michigan and the dead are hungry.

A Vigil in the Mourning is a 102,000 word m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Crown of Iron & Silver. Listening the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

It just keeps getting better!

I (im)patiently waiting for this book to come out on audio. I've read the ebook version and I knew the audio version would take the action to the next level. I was not disappointed. Patrick was out of town for work this time and Wade came with him. I adore Wade more each book, but in this one, he really showed his badass side. Jono, strong and Patrick's rock, as always. I just love the two of them together. They keep getting stronger, their pack as well. Hailey did amazing with the battle scene in this book. It's so good, I felt bad for the city of Chicago!
I can't wait for more adventures of Patrick and Jono and I keep hoping that maybe in the next book, Patrick will say 'it' back to Jono. It's a thing now for me.
Gary Furlong definitely brought this book to life!

Wade comes into his own..

For those following this series, Wade has been a wonderful oasis of comic relief. He has some choice moments in this book, plus the ongoing allure of this ongoing saga of a mortal mage, his noble werewolf lover, and the gods who continue to f#ck with their lives. Terrific performance by Gary Furlong, whose command of accents and vocal nuance brings these characters to life.

an absolutely must read/ listen to series

so before it even became available once I send it up here I pre-ordered this same with the actual book. I have to say that I used to pass up all the books. David kept popping up look for some reason I just have passing them up. until one day I decided what the heck I guess it wants me to buy it. so when I bought the normal regular book one I realized that there was an audiobook attached to it. so I decided why not just get the audio as well. I'm busy so I didn't get to physically read the actual book but I listen to the audio. and that was it, I was hooked. not just in the story. which by the way is amazing braids character-building world-building just overall a wonderful magical fantasizing extraordinary book. I what is 2 chapters in before I decided to go back on to the audible and Kindle and by the second one. and pre-order the Third. that is how amazing that book was. Not only was the book amazing but they chose the best narrator for it. after listening to this book I looked up the narrator because I fell in love with their voice because of this book. and a lot of my other purchases that I own are some this narrator. this book also was amazing as soon as I seen it for available for just a book I bought it or pre-ordered it anyway same what I noticed and I checked every day for the audible. and once became available I pre-order it. the author is an amazing talented writer and I just love this series of theirs. I just found book 5 of this series and pre-ordered the book I cannot wait the book 5 Audible. and I am sure that it will be as amazing as the last four have been. I can't wait. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves fantasy, Magic,Fae, vampires, werewolves and so on oh and yeah can't forget one Kick-Ass SOA red-haired agent.

Holy Norse Gods!!

Could this be my favorite of the series this far??
Maybe!! 4.75 Stars!

Welcome to the Windy City as Patrick investigates the whereabouts of a missing relic and soul payments. See Wade eat his weight in hot dogs.

Meanwhile, back in the Big Apple, Jono wheels and deals for recognition of his god pack while avoiding deadly threats.

Distance does make the heart grow fonder, but also makes for keeping secrets. Ahhh, not your best moments, Jono. Patrick is right to be pissed with you.

Worry not, Jono does not end up sleeping on the couch & the make-up sex is divine!

Lots of Norse gods and immortals about, so brush up on these wintry deities. My favorite? The Valkyries—wait ‘till you get a load of their rides!!

Sublime narration by Gary Furlong!

My rec? Hel yessssssss

Exciting Plot

4.5 Stars. I really love this series but it is just not quite as good as the 3 previous books by just a bit. Surprisingly it isn't because Patrick and Jono were separated for the first part of the book. In fact, shockingly enough I really enjoyed that. Patrick is sent to Chicago for a case and he takes Wade with him. Jono has to stay in New York. Jono is being hunted and in order to keep himself safe he makes some decisions that Patrick will not like and on top of that he doesn't tell him. Patrick and Wade are also dealing with problems including the pack in Chicago. I really loved that chapters were switched between Patrick's and Jono's POV . Both plot's were exciting and kept my interest. I was also happy when Patrick called Jono to Chicago and I loved that they made up quickly and while they might still be upset they put the relationship first and acted like two mature adults in a relationship!

The only issue I had was that the entire Chicago part felt a bit like a re-hash. The Dominion Sect led by Patrick's father and sister were after a godhead once again. I also apparently don't remember as much about the Norse gods as I'd like because I felt a tiny bit lost a few times with so many names being thrown around. It didn't help that I listened to it (don't get me wrong the audio was wonderful - I just retain information much better when I read vs listen). What I really want to get to is Jono and his battle with Estelle and Yusef.

I surrender.

I have read the first 4 books in this series. I don't know how the author keeps it all straight.
There are just too many characters, too many relationships and too many conflicts among them.
The mind boggles..
What there is not too much of is love and romance. There is really little to call this M/M except for a few brief occasions when the author pays lip service to the gay characters,...So, I give up!

Exciting and fantastical world

To really enjoy this audiobook, I suggest listening to the first three in the series, you won’t regret it they are just as good as this one.

Hailey Turner writes action, adventure and suspense unlike any other I’ve read so far. Turner has an incredibly ability to draw in listeners/readers with the story and keep you hooked. The characters are funny and endearing. Each with their own incredible personalities and quirks. The plot is insane and action packed! You never know what’s going to happen next and your never disappointed.

Greg Furlong did an amazing job with this series, especially this book. Always crisp and clear, concise in tone and wording that the story comes off extremely well presented. From one scene to the next, Furlong bring life, passion and oomph to the story. You can tell he is really interested in the stories as he reads them, and as excited about what is happening as we are.

This series keeps getting better

I can’t believe how much I love this series! The paranormal world is truly at its best in this series, and this book tops them all! I absolutely LOVE the variety of characters and the relationships between them. Plus this book has truly everything: love, family, friends and action, all set in a great city that can be its own character!
Gary Furlong does an outstanding job bringing these characters and their amazing story to life! This has easily become favorited mine to listen to!

It just keeps getting better!!

The world, the action, the twists and turns! This series is AMAZING! Another story, another case for Pat and another challenge to face with Jono at his side.
I love the mythological detail and depth. every god and creature seems to have a roll, I look forward to the next adventure!
Now I have to say, WADE is awesome! He's a standout in this story and adds a lightness to a somewhat heavy story with his unique humor and typical teenage behaviour. I think he's my favourite character at the moment and I can't wait to see him grow into his own!
an unique and complex world and easily one of my all time favorite series!!! can't wait for the next one 😁

Magnificent!

This is another fantastic part of Patrick and Jono's story in Hailey Turner's alternate fantasy world. I love the mix of magic and myth. Wherever Patrick goes, trouble follows (or maybe he just unearths it), and this time Chicago is in the cross hairs. I love the way the Gods all come and go at will, and how they have adapted to exist in the modern world. I love Patrick and Jono! They still experience some growing pains in their relationship, and sometimes get pulled between wanting to protect each other and keeping communication open, but there can be no denying how much they love each other (even if Patrick can't say it.) Then there is Wade...dragon fledgling, pickpocket, always hungry, and a constant source of humor and amusement. He can be bratty and pouty, but he is also loyal and protective of Jono and Patrick when things get rough. I absolutely love this series, and hope Hailey gets the next one out soon. I want to know if Patrick will find a way to save his sister.

The narration is always fantastic. I cannot say how impressed I am by the way Gary Furlong makes all those long and complex people and place names roll off his tongue like a second language. The sound editing is perfect, and I never hear a stumble or mistake. Really helps the listener get (and stay) immersed in the story.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Gay Romance Reviews and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Testing the Soul Bond

When Patrick is sent to Chicago on business, Jono is left in New York to defend his god pack. Being apart doesn’t work well for these two as they both get into some serious trouble. I watched that and counted down the minutes until they could be together – and then watched the metaphorical fireworks when each found out what the other had been up to without them.

Hurt feelings and anger, anyone? Then the mother of all reunions. Poor Wade. And how is our friendly fledgling dragon doing? Well, he’s still eating continuously, getting into mischief, and then shifting when his help is really needed. So basically being Wade. Oh, and Hermes is up to his old tricks. The trickster indeed.

This book is fast-paced and full of gods, vampires, wolves, and everything else I’ve come to expect from Ms. Turner’s Soulbound series. At times I would almost get lost then I’d be anchored by some point of reference. Also, I had high hopes something good might come from Hannah’s reappearance. Patrick’s twin sister isn’t faring well these days.

So, yeah, action, adventure, the mother of all showdowns in the windy city, and a satisfactory ending. Everything I was expecting. I will say that fortunately I’ve read the three previous books as I think this is a series you need to read in order. Could someone with an agile mind and an ability to absorb many characters do okay? Sure. But it’s so much more fun to follow these two and their merry band from the beginning.

As always, I have to give a shout out to Gary Furlong. As a narrator he’s everything you would wish for when you’ve got dozens of characters with a myriad of accents. He delivers another tour de force performance. I’m glad I listened and I can’t wait to see what these guys get up to next.

Loved this series so much

Everything I could want in an inclusive urban fantasy series. A little disappointed about the fat phobic comment in this book, but I've seen far worse in other books so I'll give it a pass for now.

Adore the characters and I'm praying there's another on the way to give closure to the final plot threads.
