Publisher's Summary

Bloomsbury presents A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer, read by Melissa Bayern, Matt Reeves, Kate Handford and Davis Brooks.

In the sequel to New York Times best-selling A Curse so Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places.

Find the heir, win the crown.

The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.

Win the crown, save the kingdom.

Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret. On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen - until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

The heart-pounding, compulsively listenable saga continues as loyalties are tested and new love blooms in a kingdom on the brink of war.

Narrators, eh, story, great

The male narrator was fantastic, but the female narrator could get very screechy. This book was better than the first!!

amazing sequel!

absolutely LOVED the first book. Couldn't put it down. For some reason it took me a little longer to get into this one but once it got me hooked, I couldn't stop. I'll be impatiently waiting for the 3rd book!

Great sequel!

I liked this even more than the first book! Grey is a great character and I really liked the addition of Lia Mara. Grey is pretty selfless and trying to do what he thinks is right and will help Rhen and the kingdom. He likes Harper, but she doesn't return his romantic feelings so it's good to see him find someone else who does care for him. Lia Mara was pretty good for the most part. She knows her mother is bad and that her sister is following in those footsteps. I wish she had stood up for what she thought was right sooner, but her relationships with Grey, Jake, and Tycho were sweet and she did try to do the right thing.
The story flowed pretty well, the rotating points of view helped with that. I would've liked more of Harper, to see what's happening in the castle. The ending was crazy and now I'm sad that we have to wait so long!

I liked this one better than the first!

Really got to know some old characters more and meet some amazing new ones! Voice actors were great! However, I would love for future books to always use the same voice anytime that character speaks. Instead of having the one voice actor speak for all the characters during their chapter.

Meh...

I was so excited for this book to come out but I gatta say, I was let down. This book is no where near the book that A Curse so Dark and Lonely is. I will stick with this series to the end because I am invested already. Book 3 better be ah-mazing!

Character Development Takes a 180

I loved the first book. It was fabulous fresh take on a overdone story. But this one turns the characters you grew to love and were led to believe have grown from the first page to the last, into the villains. Harper and Rhen are now the “bad guys” I strongly disliked this. It seemed unnatural to the the story line. I powered through it just to end it.

Not my favorite narration

The story was good, although COMPLETELY different from the first, but I had a hard time enjoying the female narrator. While she did a wonderful job expressing emotions, her characters came across a bit whiny...almost cartoonish at times.

suffers from second book syndrome

loved book one, this one is just lacking until the last 3hrs. I enjoyed Greys story but the other characters lacked depth.

Still loving the story

I enjoyed this one. However, as much as I loved Curse, book 2 took that and expanded the world and the characters we hear from. And while I loved hearing more from and about Gray, I guess I still wanted more with Harper. However, all that still cannot take away from hearing from 2 new voices - Gray and Lia Mara. So in many ways it was a brand new story. But for me, a tiny smidge of the "magic" (no pun intended) was missing for me and I can only give this 4 stars. I do, however, look forward to book 3 and finding out the conclusion of what happens to everyone (even though that is more than a year away!!).

The narration was great again. I've liked the cast selected for the series so far.

Better than the first book

A really easy listen that developed characters from the first book. Ends on a cliff hanger.

Keep on reading!

Book two in the Curse-breaker series is absolutely brilliant! I enjoyed book one (a curse so dark and lovely) but there were moments that I felt like I was reading a child’s book - Harper’s character does not have much depth but there was something overall that kept me interested.

This book is great! A story of friendship, romance and adventure- more colourful & interesting than the first. It goes beyond the main characters and brings so much more to the book with the fabulous Grey, Lia Mara and so on...

Highly recommend

Amazing Voice Acting, Story a bit of a letdown

After loving the first book in this series, this second one doesn't live up to the hype. But it was still an enjoyable listen, and I absolutely loved the narrators, especially the female narrator. You could really hear the emotion and meaning in every line and it made her chapters seem to go so quickly! The male narrator was great too but she really stood out. Looking forward to the third book as well.

A good story

I loved this story and can't wait for the next one. The ending explained so much of what was happening. I liked the overall male narrator but the female narrator was a bit shrill in tone escpecially when doing the voices of the queen and sister (mostly at the beginning)

Very annoying female narrator

The voice for Lia Mara was extremely whiny. She was almost too emotional and always sounded as if she were on the verge of tears. She also gave some of the other characters terrible voices. For example, Lia Mate's sister and their advisor. The voice was so annoying that I couldn't wait for all of Lie Mara's chapters to be over. Grey's chapters were always a huge relief because his narrator was nowhere near as awful.
