Story
Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time....

Story
Monty Roberts' father, a traditional horse trainer, had taught his son to dominate a horse in order to "break" it. But when he was 13, Monty made a discovery that changed his life. As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer.

Story
This is what happens when a writer, preacher, and lover of words encounters some of creation’s wisest theologians: horses. First, she argues with them. They are, after all, horses. What could they possibly know about life and God that theologians haven’t already written? But slowly, she engages their language and listens to their holy wisdom, attending to how they express their being, actions, and relationships. She allows horses to draw her out of the faith of intellect and into a deeper faith of emotion, body, and soul.

In the years that followed he became a part of their family. A Big Disappointment
What did you like best about A Good Horse Is Never a Bad Color? What did you like least?
The best part of the book is the beautiful cover photo.I could only listen to small bits at a time. The book is written with incredibly tedious attention to minutae that has nothing to do the title of this book. Plus, the narrator is a "gee whiz" type with a grating voice overperforming a boring story. It will take 5 minutes to hear how "The Old Man" (you will learn to cringe when you get hearing this word over and over and over....lit a cigarette. If you are have a basic knowledge of how to be nice to a horse you are too advanced for this book. It is for someone who has no idea how to be with a horse.Additionally, the book contains several sections about how the author witnessed, but did nothing to help, cruelty to horses ---even 30 minutes of someone misriding a horse he knew. Unbearable
And by the way, if you are expecting to learn something about horses with color, as indicated in the title, you'll be let down. I was hoping to learn more about the various breeds often considered "difficult."
What do you think your next listen will be?
I would love to find a good book on horsemanship that is informative and educational.
What didn’t you like about Mike Chamberlain’s performance?
Grating, annoying nasal sound and too forced performance. It's as if the whole book is read as an exclamation point. The book is too wordy and includes way too much irrelevant random details. (is there an editor anywhere?)
Did A Good Horse Is Never a Bad Color inspire you to do anything?
Remember to thank my horse

Nothing I did not know already
If you've taken the gamut of lessons or studied natural horsemanship, please pass this by. I can't say for certain I heard or learne anything new or original. It's the basis of horsemanship, but if you've been through that loop, save your money. I did like the storylines and delivery. All and all, it's good stuff, true to the heart of a humane approach to horses. If you are naive about this topic though, have at it.

Old Man?! He’s your mentor. Have some respect.
I enjoyed the stories of his mentor’s expertise up until I couldn’t tolerate the authors arrogance anymore. I am appalled by the exhaustively repeated degrading term “The old man” that he uses throughout the book to refer to his mentor whom he claims to respect and whom he claims to have learned his horse savvy from. So completely obnoxious and condescending that I had to stop listening half way through.

Another fantastic book from Mark Rashid
If you could sum up A Good Horse Is Never a Bad Color in three words, what would they be?
Inspiring, wise, warm
What other book might you compare A Good Horse Is Never a Bad Color to, and why?
Horses Never Lie
What about Mike Chamberlain’s performance did you like?
The narrator's performance was OK, and I definitely prefer him to some of the other narrators of Mark Rashids books, but he was a tiny bit stilted. It didn't detract from enjoying the book, or the quality of the content, however a more skilled narrator could have made this one of those magical audiobooks that you feel empty when they're over.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes absolutely! I do with all Mark Rashid's books. I always finish them within a day or two, and then immediately want to run out and spend time with horses!
Any additional comments?
With this book in particular, you hear a lot of stories about the Old Man who started off MR's own journey with horses. The author mentions the Old Man a few times, but always briefly, in his previous books, but you know that if he ever went into detail about the Old Man it could potentially be something really special, and this book lives up to all that promise and more. A really special and personal book from MR, it can't fail to touch you as well as teach you. I'll be listening to it again and again.

Story
A revolutionary approach to the techniques of working with horses, by a renowned instructor. In Horses Never Lie, renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid challenges the conventional wisdom of "alpha leadership" and teaches the listener to become a "passive leader" - a counterpart to the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to associate with and to follow. Applying Rashid’s principles and techniques helps cultivate horse personalities that are responsive and dependable regardless of the rider.
