Did you know there is an area of your brain known as the "Lizard Brain" that thinks only about the immediate moment and your means of survival? Yes, in certain circumstances, your "Rational Brain" can effectively "shut down" and you are at the mercy of a reptile... dry-mouthed, sweating, queasy, unable to think clearly - even though you know better. When does the Lizard Brain run the show? It can happen in any number of unfamiliar, uncomfortable, challenging, or "stressful" riding situations. But here's the thing: with the right kind of training, you can learn to manage the reptile within.

Story
John Saint Ryan has travelled the world working with horses. John's behavior with all students, whether equine or human, is aligned with his principles, which is a rare practice, and he is also able to share his knowledge in an agile and even poetic way, with openness, humor, and grace. John has drawn from life experiences as diverse as martial arts and acting to develop the self-awareness and poise that make him the excellent educator he is for horses and riders today. He debunks myths that are still prevalent in horse training, like dominance strategies and coercive practices.

Publisher's summary
Monty Roberts has traveled the world working with difficult horses. He has trained Queen Elizabeth's yearlings, jittery stallions on movie sets, and million-dollar race horses. In each case, he controls the animal without using force or inflicting pain.
Monty's father, a traditional horse trainer, had taught his son to dominate a horse in order to "break" it. But when he was 13, Monty made a discovery that changed his life. As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding.
Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer. Now, in his own words, he shares the story of his memorable life.
An immediate best seller, The Man Who Listens to Horses is filled with courage, compassion, and Roberts' vast affection for his best friend, the horse.

I thought this book might be more of a didactic read but found the story surprisingly engaging. Monty Roberts is a legend but I knew little of his teachings and less about his life. Highly recommended for anyone interested in horses and animal behavior.

Inspiration
it was interesting. I wish it explained in more detail, how to read horses. I did learn from it. I live in an area where the old cowboy way is still prominent. I much prefer this style and need guidance. I did not grow up around horses and have only had one for 2 yrs now. I love it . The people around me however, sound like Monty's father. I'm glad he shared his story. it gives me hope and I will continue to look for someone like Monty to train myself, so I may learn to talk too and establish a partnership with my horse.

The narrator and tone for the introduction (and last chapter) almost had me returning the book immediately. Hated it. Once you get into the book it gets much better, however I have come to learn at least 50% of it is BS. Still a pretty good story though!

A big story full of amazing smaller stories .
This life of a unique and inspirational man is unbelievably believable. My personal favorite sub story in this book was the communication with deer! So interesting!
When he talks about his dad; I wished I could give a comforting hug to the boy inside the man.

Story
Many horse trainers, even those who espouse the so-called natural horsemanship approach, take the position that horses who fail to obey a human's request are doing so as much out of perversity as ignorance. That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time....

That's not Mark Rashid's view. In his words, "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all. Story
In this illuminating book, brain scientist and horsewoman Janet Jones describes human and equine brains working together. Using plain language, she explores the differences and similarities between equine and human ways of negotiating the world. Mental abilities—like seeing, learning, fearing, trusting, and focusing—are discussed from both human and horse perspectives. Throughout, true stories of horses and handlers attempting to understand each other—sometimes successfully, sometimes not—help to illustrate the principles.
