Publisher's Summary

Perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Uprooted, this stand-alone, fantasy romance about a human girl and her marriage to the Elf King is impossible to put down! The elves come for two things: war and wives. In both cases, they come for death.

Three thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella's village to be their Human Queen. To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark 19-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she's dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town's only healer.

That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives...for her. Everything Luella had thought she'd known about her life, and herself, was a lie. Taken to a land filled with wild magic, Luella is forced to be the new queen to a cold yet blisteringly handsome Elf King. Once there, she learns about a dying world that only she can save. The magical land of Midscape pulls on one corner of her heart; her home and people tug on another...but what will truly break her is a passion she never wanted. A Deal with the Elf King is a complete, stand-alone novel, inspired by the tales of Hades and Persephone, as well as Beauty and the Beast, with a "happily ever after" ending. It's perfect for fantasy romance fans looking for just the right amount of steam and their next slow-burn and swoon-worthy couple.

A big unanswered question.

I get the mixed reviews, but it is a cute story. There isn’t any cheating in the book, but it is discussed that the king only has heirs with other Elves, to keep the bloodline pure. I want to know if he’s still going to hold to that or not. That changes everything.

Not as good as I hoped

I really wanted to like this book. It had a cool world and an interesting concept. But Luella was so frustratingly blind that I spent a good deal of time muttering under my breath, calling her an idiot.

The audiobook narration was alright. The production quality was good.

it was fine.

It was just okay. It flows, but I think it wasn't the most interesting thing. didn't struggle to finish it, but I definitely jumped around to other books while listening cause it couldn't keep my attention fully.

characters lacking

The beginning of the book was promising, but the author uses exposition too much.

The male characters lack motivation beyond wanting to marry the main character.

The main character is annoying. She's frustrating in a 'written by a teenager' kind of way. She's argumentative when she should observe the works around her, and asks questions instead of investigating and discovering.

The author needs to trust the reader more.

Protagonist Dummy

The protagonist is supposed to be a powerful, smart queen but so many of her thoughts and actions are SO dumb.

The love story here is cute.

Decent story and I was entertained.

Disappointing ending

The world building and premise was good. I enjoyed the first 2/3rd of the book. The ending was incredibly predictable and dragged out. Also, minimal spice. Great voice acting though.

Fades to black

The romance does fade to black. But I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for a sequel or next book in the universe- apparently they’re all stand alone but not on audible yet!

Mostly good but tedious at times

I originally loved the headstrong lead character but she got in her way too much.

Major Meh

Nothing really stoles the heart in this story. I couldn't relate to MC with her constant talk about duty. All felt very repetitive, predictable.
The way Evans reads men sometimes just don't do it for me.

Nice surprise

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Came across it because the of narrator. The story's is short and sweet. Kova managed to make likable charectors in a short time and creates a pretty word to explore. Recommend it.

A very enjoyable Story

Loved the story and characters. left me wanting more! the characters were nicely fleshed out and although it was easy to see where the story would end it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the book.

The only saving grace is the narration

Not the worst book I've ever read, but a far, far cry from the best.

While the bare bones premise of A Deal with the Elf King was promising, the execution left me totally unsatisfied.

For a new adult novel, the character development is limited, the chemistry between the female MC and her king/husband/captor/love interest was lacking, and the potential for a killer magic system was squandered. If you want true magic, you won't find it here. What you will get is speedy plant growth; a knife summoning in one, measly sentence; and what is essentially teleporting through shadows. ADWTEK has the depth of a YA read, just with adult characters. In saying that, I've read many, many YA novels that have a better plot and more thorough world building than this. And vastly more interesting characters. The side characters had potential but they were really only there to walk Luella from one room to another, or help her make a tincture or two.

ADWTEK had the perfect setup for a socio-political plot between the Elves and the Fae, which really could've been explored had the book been longer. It's a total missed opportunity for a duology centred around Luella and Eldas, post coronation, and with alternating chapters between their points of view. It could naturally lead into a second duology focused on the Fae kingdom and magic system. Why have three stand alone books in the one world when there's so much potential for a more fleshed out story between the two warring societies? Speaking of war, I believe I was promised a crumb of it, and I've been left starving. Not that I particularly enjoy reading about wars, but it would've made the stakes higher. Like, A LOT higher.

In terms of what was good, it really boils down to a few tender moments, and a wolf that can be summoned out of the ominous Fade. Hook (a very, very good boy) turned out to be more useful than the Elf King himself, and far more charming—and he's literally a dog who can't even speak.

Overall, I'm not at all inclined to read the second book, A Dance with the Fae Prince, considering this book took at least 30 chapters to pick up the pace and intrigue, and had an incredibly rushed ending. There was not a single surprise in terms of the villain, the key to ending the need for human queens in the elf kingdom, or the plot in general. It was really one trope after another, complete with an icy, dark haired male with a secret heart of gold (hmm was his heart even that golden, or was it just marginally better?) and, of course, the infamous 'there was only one bed'. I see what you did there, Eldas.

Really glad I didn't buy a physical copy considering I fell asleep multiple times, but I wish I could get back the hours I spent listening to it. There's definitely no second read value. It has left me wondering if it's worth reading Elise Kova's other series. I don't know that I'll ever be willing, though Air Awakens and A Trial of Sorcerers have great ratings. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you have a day or two to kill, and really, really like dogs.

a very sweet YI Hades and Peresephone retelling.

yes it's full of miscommunication, but that's life, how we can so easily misunderstood what someone is saying or meaning and we apply our own interpretations and judgements.
dealing with two people that feel worthless of love and bound to duty, possibly to avoid romance, but in Luella's case I feel she found her worth in what she did for others and didn't see a place for love in her life..
for some reason she did assume the worst of Eldas at every turn.
I did cry at some of the things in the dynamic between Lualla and Eldas, I found it very touching.
but this book is very much YOUNG young adult and the smexy scenes are a little cringe/ basic.

Elizabeth's narration is very good.. they have a very nice voice to listen to. my only issue is the made Willow a MALE elf sound like an old granny when he wasn't much older then Lualla, this was very confusing.

Cringe-worthy

If you can handle the narrator's annoying vocal sliding then brace yourself for the lack of substance in this cringe-worthy tale. The author has tried to make the main character an independent woman but has failed miserably, reflected in an abundance of immaturity.
