Publisher's Summary

Audible Studios presents a brand new recording of Charles Dickens' timeless seasonal story A Christmas Carol, performed by Hugh Grant.

First published in 1843, it tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and unpleasant man who dislikes people generally and Christmas especially.

One Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and given a glimpse of the many homes and lives which Scrooge has touched in his wretched life to date. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

Featured Article: It’s a Wonderful Life—Book vs. Movie

It's a Wonderful Life is widely acknowledged as the best Christmas film of all time. So, it's kind of hard to believe that when the film premiered in 1946, it was considered a near-flop because it didn't find immediate financial success. It wasn't until the advent of television programming and a clerical mistake in licensing that It's a Wonderful Life was played on TV, again and again, propelling it to become an enduring favorite among audiences, especially at Christmastime. But like the film's origins, "The Greatest Gift," the story that inspired it, also had a fraught beginning.

Christmas Classic Given New Life

I absolutely love the life that Hugh Grant breathes into this story. Read this in one sitting Christmas Day while working on things around the house. This is a reading of the story I can see myself returning to every year.

HUGH GRANT MADE THIS FANTASTIC!

I have read or heard the Christmas carol so many times I don't believe I could count them. Patrick Stewart did a stellar job, and so have many other really talented narrator's but I have to say, Hugh Grant made this story human and touchable and so uplifting and so much fun to listen to that from now on, he is my favorite bringer of Dickens at Christmas!

The Eternal Christmas Story

I love this story! The narrator did an awesome job!
I'm glad I listened to the eternal Christmas story that reminds us what the Spirit of the season is all about and the reason that Jesus was born - to save us from ourselves and our attitudes.

Exceptional Performance

Hugh Grant provides a masterful performance of this Christmas classic. No matter how many times and how many film/TV versions you have seen, there are humorous and moving nuances to the written text that do not come through in even the finest productions. I recommend this Audible production of the Dickens’ novel unreservedly.

AMAZING PERFORMANCE!

Truly, I know this story like the back of my hand, and Hugh Grant's performance brought me to tears no less than 12 times. Unbelievable. I dare you to be unaffected by it, even if you're Scrooge himself!

Read, not Performed.

Unfortunately, Hugh does not bring his acting abilities to this performance. If you like having a story read to you, Hugh reads well. If you are looking for a more animated version of this classic, Tim Curry’s performance is much better.

Perhaps the best unabridged version I have heard.

I collect all things Christmas Carol by C. Dickens. I have many audio versions but this is the very best I have heard to date. Hugh Grant's voice hits the right notes; no silly voices, no over acting, just a superb narration.

Hugh Grant Christmas Gift

Hugh gives the Christmas gift of narration to this holiday classic. His story telling gave me a new appreciation of just listening rather than tradition of watching the movie. I loved it!

Just delightful. Perfect.

i think I have all of the "Christmas Carol"s from Audible, and enjoy them immensely. This, however, is the best. It is perfect. It's Charles Dickens as Charles Dickens would have read it, I'm sure.

I would now like Audible to engage Hugh Grant to read the rest of the Dickens canon. Seriously.

An excellent tail let down by a Poor narration

I came across this free gift whilst browsing the audible bestseller lists. I love a Christmas Carol, it’s sheer magnificence, power and emotive force keeps me coming back to read every year so when I came across yet another recording, I was excited as I own several. First, the recording appears to be very short and I know why, Hugh Grant reads the book as if he needs to get as much said in the shortest possible time. This does not leave any scope for him to use his undeniable voice acting talent to give the book the emotive force and the characters their individual voices. It feels to me as if he is just reading the book and rushing through the story, paying little attention to the undeniable Roth of Jacob Marley, the tenderness of Christmas past, the merriness of Christmas present and the bleakness of Christmas yet to come. I was fortunate enough to download the Tim Curry presentation audible released in 2009 and this version falls a long way short of that standard. By all means collect this as a freebie however there are better performances out there for discerning listeners of this undeniable classic.

Pure joy and delight. Merry Christmas, everyone!

The ultimate Christmas listen - beautiful and uplifting. Regardless of how many times I've read/listened to this masterpiece, it never gets old. Every year I enjoy the anticipation of Christmas even more thanks to this beautiful story by Mr Dickens.
Hugh Grant's narration is superb. This was my first audiobook narrated by Mr Grant and I absolutely adored his performance - can't wait to listen to more of his narration.
Thank you, Audible, for such a generous and wonderful present!

Really enjoyed

I suppose like many people I had see the Disney movies of this but had never read the book and I am very glad I did. Really enjoyed and it feels so fitting that I read this before the new year.
As the quote by Lao Tzu goes 'If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading'. And a great reminder to reevaluate.

perfect accompaniment to painting

Listened in one hit as I did some pre Christmas wall painting. How perfectly lovely and great narration. I realised I hadn't read it before when it came up as a podcast subject on "In Our Time" from the BBC. I highly recommend listening to that also if you're a podcast fan.

Listen to this version even if you think you know the story already

Hugh Grant’s voice is melodious and weighty. Perfectly pitched for this beloved story which we assume we know too well. His range of voices for each character and story telling chops enliven Charles Dickens’s thought provoking cautionary tale. Heartily recommended without caveat.
