Publisher's summary

When a woman mysteriously vanishes, her sister must tally up the clues to discover her fate.

Marguerite, a beautiful woman, has disappeared from her small town in Upstate New York. But is foul play involved? Or did she merely take an opportunity to get away for fun, or finally make the decision to leave behind her claustrophobic life of limited opportunities?

Her younger sister Gigi wonders if the flimsy silk Dior dress, so casually abandoned on the floor, is a clue to Marguerite's having seemingly vanished. The police examine the footprints made by her Ferragamo boots leaving the house, ending abruptly, and puzzle over how that can help lead to her. Gigi, not so pretty as her sister, slowly reveals her hatred for the perfect, much-loved, Marguerite.

Bit by bit, like ripping the petals off a flower blossom, revelations about both sisters are uncovered. Subtly, but with the unbearable suspense at which Joyce Carol Oates excels, clues mount up to bring to light the fate of the missing beauty.

Quiet Horror

This is a very quiet story of a disappointed girl. She decides to try and mold her life around her in a way that will bring her some satisfaction against that disappointment.

Oates is a master at story telling and this one will keep you enthralled until the end...

Clever and horrifying

Another great cliffhanger from the inimitable JCO. She is fearless. This novel was deeply fascinating and horrific, but very quietly horrific, and leaves much to the imagination. Not sure about certain things still. The narrator got it exactly right, in my opinion. Just the right combination of young girl and clever fiend.

just OK

The story was engaging enough but the narration was poor. Mispronunciations and wooden phrasing frequently.

Gripping, a subtle, but horrifying story from the master.

Joyce Carol Oates has done it again. I highly recommend the Audible version of this book. The narration is excellent.

Amazing storyteller J. O. Carole

Carole takes you on a journey of words and if you are closely listening you build and dismantle your own hypothesis over and over through the book. She is a master at keeping you guessing. Loved this one and will continue reading her books.

Big disappointment

I need my mysteries to have more resolution and clarity. This had neither. Too esoteric for me.
