Publisher's summary

Death comes for everyone, even Drake Chandali. The aging process that twists all unmated dragon shifters’ bodies into something useless has taken hold of his body centuries early. A mate could have reversed the process, but now it’s too late. To protect his team of enforcers, he leaves, and comes face-to-face with the woman he’d thought was human when he saved her from a fire months before.

Except she’s not human. She’s a mate.

Camilla Carrillo almost lost her family to wildfire. To discover she’s fated to mate a creature made of flame and rage, and become one herself, should be terrifying. But somehow a rightness settles inside her, especially when she’s around the glowering red dragon shifter who wants nothing to do with her.

When Drake learns Cami bears his mark - the same mark as the High King - he refuses to believe she’s meant to be his. It’s too late. How could he turn Cami only to take her with him to the grave? At the same time, he can’t walk away. Hiding her from the corrupt, rotting High King might be the last honorable thing Drake ever does with the little time he has left.

Heartwarming, steamy and suspenseful

I loved Drake and Cami’s fated mates dragon shifter romantic suspense tale. The book will give you all the swoony swoons while also pulling at your heartstrings with all the emotions. Drake is a dragon shifter who has been a member of the Huracan enforcers for centuries, protecting humans from dragons, putting out dragon fires, and keeping the secret of dragon kind. Unfortunately, he is unmated and due to his age, a degenerative nerve disease has started to kill him. Cami is a human dragon mate who has started to show dragon sign after a fire at her family’s ranch. She is currently hiding with Rune , a dragon shifter who helps dragon mates. When Drake comes to live with Rune to hide until his death, he meets Cami for the second time. While there is attraction whether they are mates is unknown. A mate could save Drake or could kill her, either in the mating or with his death. While they are working on whether or not they’re fated mates, they need to deal with Cami’s family issues, Drake’s weakness, hiding from the mating counsel, and protecting his team of enforcers. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. This shifter romance includes all the goodness that you’d expect from this genre - sweet moments, steamy scenes, fighting, dangerous situations, evil actors, henchmen, loyal friends and family, painful pasts, political machinations, mystery, revelations, plot twists, big feels, and laughs. This is the 4th book in the Fire’s Edge series. While this is a standalone and you will not be lost if you have not read the other books in the series, there are some overarching storylines that you’ll enjoy more if you read the books in order. This series parallels the Inferno Rising series and some plot lines crossover with that one. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Brian Pallino and Melissa Moran did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly. I really love the added dimension listening brings to a story.
