Publisher's summary

Decades ago, rogue dragon shifter Rune Abaddon took a stand against the decaying, corrupt systems governing their people. He now uses his bad-ass reputation to protect the innocent as it all comes crashing down. But he's pushed the limits one too many times. His hideout is destroyed, his few allies are scattered and hiding, and the Alliance has placed a dead-or-alive bounty on his head, making him the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere.

And then the most enticing woman he's ever met barges into his mountain, demanding an audience.

Hadyn Reece's future was ripped away long ago. The man fated to be her mate was murdered alongside her parents before Hadyn was old enough to be turned, leaving her to be raised and trained by her dead mate's parents in the dragon shifter world. Now, the Alliance has come for the only family she has left. It's a good thing she was raised by dragons, because the only one who can help her save them is a traitor she'd be smart to fear.

Especially when his dragon decides she's theirs.

Contains mature themes.

Rune and Hayden - a perfect swoony, exciting HEA

Oh my goodness. This book is everything. It was a masterpiece of suspense and romance. I knew where the story needed to go but I was not sure how we were going to get there. Fortunately, the journey was even better than I expected. Expect to feel all the things while reading this book - expect to swoon, to bite your nails, and to cry. The Traitor has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, fan your face steamy sex, dangerous excitement, cut throat and loyal supernatural creatures, and even some chuckles, all set against the backdrop of a continuing conflict in the dragon world. I love a book that includes a grumpy, tortured hero or a capable self-rescuing heroine and this book includes both. Rune, is a rogue dragon who has made it his personal mission to go against the dragon counsel and save unmated dragon mates. He believed in his cause enough to abandon his team of dragon enforcers decades ago and become a hated dragon. Rune feels like he is so unworthy even though he’s not. He’s a good guy and you just know love will let him see he’s such a kind, sweet, good guy who deserves all the good things. Hayden is a dragon mate whose fated mate died when she was a child before they were mated. Her adopted rogue dragon parents have recently been captured, imprisoned and are awaiting execution. Hayden is more than capable on her own for most things but this is beyond her so she turns to Rune to help her save them. On their way to their HEA while trying to stay one step ahead of their enemies, Rune and Hayden have to both learn to let down their walls - to let go of their pasts and where they thought they were supposed to go in order to embrace a life neither one thought was possible for themselves. With The Traitor, Abigail Owens once again proves she’s a fantastic world builder and story weaver. While the book is a standalone, there is an overarching story arc that threads through the series so they are best read in order. And while this book is the end of this series, the dragon conflict and war continues in the parallel Inferno Rising series.

I usually prefer dual narration but Melissa Moran did a good job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.
