The highly anticipated sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black's stunning adult debut, Book of Night. This program features multicast narration.

"[Narrator Sara] Amini's narration captures Charlie's trademark cynicism, as well as her heartbreak and feelings of vulnerability... As more characters are introduced, Amini expertly differentiates them, including several sinister-sounding shadows." — AudioFile (Earphones Award Winner)

There'd always been something wrong with Charlie Hall. Crooked from the day she was born. Never met a bad decision she wasn't willing to double down on. She may be good enough to steal a shadow from a tower, but will she be good enough to steal back a heart?

I really enjoyed this story. Very unique theme as far as fantasy fiction goes. I didn't always follow what each title a person (or not person) had for what they were/could do and whatnot but it wasn't super confusing or anything like that. Reading a physical copy for something like that helps me follow each persons ability and what that means so listening to the audiobook made it only slightly difficult for the visual person I am. Either way really loved this ending. It was very.... sweet? and on point. :)

Great ending to an interesting duology.

It was so exciting to revisit this series. The first book touched my life just as grief did. It was a nice escape. This one was just as compelling, It made me wish I had a quickened shadow I could send to shake up a few doctors, coroners, politicians and liars. At the end I caught myself wishing my husband's shadow could be here. Great story.

Oh Charlie I'm so....

Oh man, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this sequel since I finished the first. I was truly anticipating it. I remember checking whether a second book was coming right after the tragic cliffhanger at the end of The Book of Night. I’d say the wait was about 8/10 worth it. The book kicks off strongly, keeping me engaged from start to finish. It’s more of a journey than just an adventure. The first book provided the informative backstory of our protagonist, Charlie, and how she turned into a con artist who believes in true love, even if it costs her. This sequel really hits the ground running, picking up immediately where the last left off. I had hoped for more romance in the first book, or at least more interaction between her and Vince, and this book delivered that. Vince/Red is the protagonist alongside Charlie, but I still felt I didn’t get enough time with them.
I really enjoyed the book, but now that I’ve finished it, I wish there was more to explore. There was romance in the story, but we didn’t get to see it fully develop. It’s hard to put into words. I need to process it a bit longer, but I believe the premise is wickedly interesting, and I love how our main character is portrayed with genuine human flaws in a world full of shadow magic. This made her even more relatable to me and made me want to root for her and Red to be together. I would love to read a novella about what happens next. A romance novel exploring their love story would be amazing. That said, this is primarily a fantasy detective story, not a romance, and I understand the difference. As a fantasy, I really enjoyed listening to it and would definitely recommend it.

I really enjoyed this story. A wonderful wrap-up to this duology and just in time for autumn. One star taken off of the performance only because the audio editing is a little choppy in some places and I felt Red’s voice actor was miscast. Pretty perfect other than that!

Excellent
