Excellent

Excellent story, excellent narration, excellent character development and world building. Mafia type violence and some graphic sex scenes.

Romance

At first the book started slow and I wasn’t that interested. Then it got better as Ari and Sam got older. I’m happy the way it ended but wanted more. Does Sam and Ari find each other in the end? So they run the new empire together? I hope there is a second book coming.

Beautiful voice work and gorgeously written.

Been a Marie Lu fan for years now and it’s so fun having adult books to read now that I’m no longer a younger fan.

The magic system is so unique and interesting, the world building was great too. Anyone who complains about the romantasy aspect of it clearly didn’t look at ANY of the marketing. They made it clear the tropes and the kind of story that would be told. It’s not marketed as a high fantasy adult book.

I don’t actually really like romantasy but the diversity and the way this author is so well written made me fall in love with the story.

A MUST READ. And I hope it’ll get romantasy readers into the fantasy genre more, certain aspects of this book feel very similar to Mistborn.

Didn't expect a sex & violence filled romantasy

The only thing that makes this book "adult" rather than YA is the amount of graphic sex and violence. This is a romantasy novel for people in their teens and 20s. Also uses 2 of the most obnoxious romance tropes as the premise for the book. Too bad. The writing, audio narration, character and world building was all good. The relationship between Sam and her mother Connie was excellent--probably the main thing that saves this from one star.
