Mostly noise

A one pager turned into a boring book. I forced myself to listen to the end, but the book is an endless repetition of the same arguments. It is mostly noise...

Interesting, but detailed for audiobook

The subject was tough for an audiobook, but the narrator did well with it. I am interested in the ideas in the book, but for whatever reason, I was never able to access the pdf document that was supposed to come with the book. I have been able to access pdf docs with other audiobooks, so I'm not sure what the issue was with this one or how to resolve it. The content is important and much of it was presented in a way I had not considered before. If this content is extremely important to you, I recommend getting the physical book instead of the audiobook. I want to capture the essence of the decision hygiene, as explained in the book, but wasn't really able to fully capture it from listening. I think I would need to see it written in the book. I oversee various qualitative case review process in my line of work, so we have been working to increase inter-rater reliability, which seems consistent with the ideas in this book about noise reduction. We ultimately want the case review data to be reliable and valid, so we need the case reviewers to follow the protocol and rate according to the criteria. As such, the concepts in this book were helpful and give me additional ways to communicate the importance of following the guidance and not trying to be creative with the review tool. Where there is judgment, there is noise.

Very Intriguing Listen

Very informative on several levels. Kahneman does a wonderful job of explaining noise and showing it’s effect on all of our experience.

This book is not a continuity of Thinking Fast and Slow, but it is as good as, because it not only shows those cognitive knowledge in action, it also calls for actions ourselves.

if noise is addressed, society will improve and become more just and equal. when unattended, noise can make a benign tumor to go into a chemotherapy with lots of emotional consequences. as well as it can put several years of a person behind bars when a different hour of the day would make the judge give public service as a sentence.

I hope you'll read, and become prepared to make your workplace, your house and your brain able to tell when noise is happening, how to distinguish bias from noise and their values, even when you should not address it.

Repetitive

It isn't exactly a thriller. The book is kind of repetitive. I would not recommend.

Uneven quality

The first part of the book is relatively simplistic and gets to be repetitive. The second half of the book which specifies the sources of error (variance/noise) in human judgements is much better. The advice on reducing variance -- multiple independent judgements, specification of methods and domains, and group discussions are all worthy of implementation in many fields.

No Noise Is Good

Forget the long drawn out explanation you get at meetings and start preparing to get the information you want. Noise helped me see how easy it can be to shift out the information from talent and get them to focus on the facts. In today's world where noise equals ratings it only works for media. Companies need to understand how important it is to make sure the employees don't drift into a comfortable environment of decision making. Good read.

I like this book over All, I bet long.

I like this book of overall it should have been a bit shorter. the ideas presented were interesting and informative and reasons for why we should follow procedures and protocols that reduce noise clearly presented. the problem is I felt like I was forced to listen to a very long series of examples demonstrating and usefulness the techniques for reducing noise. I was hoping to learn a bit more about system noise and what can be considered a noisy system and why and whether or not all systems appear to be noisy are in fact noisy. he also didn't spend much time examining this possibility rather just assumed that all systems that have large amounts of variability we're in fact an error because there was one correct solution.

seems like a new topic, I feel, there will be more to come. I will keep an eye out for more books like this.

Insightful but repetitive

Interesting and insightful, though not surprising to anyone who has studied even introductory psychology. Also, consider the dead horse beaten. The points are introduced, retold, summarized, repeated, and reintroduced. The book could have been half the size or included twice the number of demonstrative examples.
