Resumen del Editor

More than four million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's, and as many as twenty million have close relatives or friends with the disease. Revolutionizing the way we perceive and live with Alzheimer's, Joanne Koenig Coste offers a practical approach to the emotional well-being of both patients and caregivers that emphasizes relating to patients in their own reality. Her accessible and comprehensive method, which she calls habilitation, works to enhance communication between care partners and patients. By meeting the patients in their own reality, rather than trying to force them to comply with a world they may no longer inhabit, we are able to respond in a way that brings satisfaction and even joy to both patients and caregivers.

A Must for anyone caring for someone with Alzheime

Would you consider the audio edition of Learning to Speak Alzheimer's to be better than the print version?

Audio is better for those who do not like to read, or those who have time to listen to audio books on a daily commute, long drive, etc. I will order a print version to refer to for ongoing reference.

Who was your favorite character and why?

n/a

Which scene was your favorite?

The stories that are related from real caregivers and patients.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book did make me both laugh and cry. The topic of the book makes you cry, but you can learn to laugh through the pain.

Any additional comments?

A wonderful book which provides an alternative, positive guide for anyone who cares for someone with Alzheimer's or Progressive Dementia. I listened to this book while commuting to work, however, I am ordering a hard-copy version for myself and my father, so we can use it as an ongoing reference. The only reason for not giving 5 stars for Performance is that the narrator speaks a bit fast and sometimes doesn't pause for the listener to absorb what has been said, which would be helpful. Narrator sounds a bit "preachy", which could turn someone off of the book. The "preachy" tone is very much in contrast to what the author seems to be trying to project.

Home Caregiver tips

This was a quick read with many real-life examples. The author describes "habilitation care" philosophies with causes and effects of correct & incorrect approaches to patient care. Its intended audience is home caregivers & their loved ones in early to mid stage dementia.
