The apocalypse didn’t break Plynthia. The nobles did that long before the end came.

Len and Rick survived its fall—barely.

Sent into dungeon after dungeon to map, clear, and die for noble profit, they earned their stats the hard way: one scar, one kill, one body at a time.

Now they’ve gone back. Not by choice. Not by magic. By system design.

The cracks they remember are spreading again.

Trapped on the frontlines of the Stained Mountain Range, they're under siege by mana-mutated beasts. Their only shot at saving the firebase? Dig through the mountain to reach Goran before Halem Forest spills over and devours them all.

But Goran isn't a rescue. It's a powder keg.

The kingdom’s lords are circling—offering bribes, spinning promises, preparing for a civil war that hasn’t started yet... but will. Len and Rick have seen this game before, and they know how it ends: with bodies stacked in dungeons and nobles squabbling over the loot.

This time, it’s not their war.

But if they walk away, it might be everyone’s last.

Against Ruin’s Fate is Book 2 of Restarting the Apocalypse, a gritty Regressor LitRPG series by international bestseller Michael Chatfield.

Expect: Dungeon warfare

Crafting-based progression

Military realism

Zero plot armor

Power earned, not gifted

Rage, rage against ruin’s fate—and change it.

I have a love hate for politics yet the buildup of ego only to be squashed by reality is always exciting

what an incredibly fun book. I had this one marked in my calendar. I really enjoyed the world building and the way both MC's are written. The writing is sharp and funny. I laughed out loudly several times. I registered to the first book before I started the second. Now I am eagerly awaiting book 3.

Fantastic listen

Great Series
Only issues was several bad edits dropping words or repeating a word.

Great Storytelling but…

story and performance were great. but words at the end of sentences seemed to be chopped off. the first 2 letters of the last word or phrase would be sounded, but then fade to black and then the next sentence would start. pretty frustrating

bad editing.... or something

this book was committed the greatest sin you can with an audiobook it is boring. they had a ton of side characters but we're supposed to care about storage progresses oddly. it lost any semblance of what it seemed like it was supposed to be in the first book . I wanted to like it I really did instead it was like homework a struggle to finish
side note the narrator did fantastic

boring

There was way too much low-stakes fighting, and the dungeon delving didn’t even feel like side-quests. They were just used as devices to power up the characters and city-building with no feeling of adventure or risk for reward.

Ironically it was when the story got away from the action and focused on the characters and the overall plot, this audiobook was much better served.

I will continue this series, but Chatfield clearly still needs to continue to improve his editing process. At least the writing/grammar mechanics have improved in this series over his previous books… I didn’t notice any blatant examples like using the word “body” 10 times in a single paragraph.

All in all, it was worth the credit and I will continue the series. In spite of missed opportunities and some pacing issues I am still interested in seeing where the next book goes.

Not as good as the first book. But the overall story is still engaging.

So far, I haven’t read a book yet that he has disappointed me on. This was another good book in this great series and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Fingers crossed at the next door will be a bit longer.

Great book

I should love this book, it has most of my favorite tropes - a regression setting, powerful characters, base building, and overarching plot alongside slice of life elements - and the writing is good. Unfortunately, I was bored out of my mind, the first 5 hours were especially tedious and I nearly gave up. The remainder picked up a bit, liked the visit to the new city and some of the kingdom intrigue, but not enough to redeem this one.

This is purely a matter of preference to be clear, it is well written and you can tell the author has a plan. But for me, it feels like the story keeps getting bogged down in engineering and millitary minutia at the cost of character development and world building. For example, when a couple of their soldiers died/were injured, it held no weight since we'd spent almost zero time getting to know any of them besides name and rank. Could have used a couple alternative POV chapters instead of more discussions of locomotive engineering...

I'll very likely get the next one though. This whole book felt annoyingly like setup, but I do like the direction the author is setting up for, so I'll give it a try.

I really want to like this, but it could not hold my attention
