Carter Westwood is a living legend.

Well…maybe that’s just his ego; but he does have a legendary reputation in the small town of Terracotta, Georgia, where fires seem to rage only when he’s on shift at his department.

The one thing Carter loves more than being a firefighter is the prospect of being a husband and a father one day. Ready to put his days of one-night-stands and no-strings-attached relationships behind him, Carter meets a woman who is everything he’s ever wanted.

Just one problem:

She’s not looking for anything serious.

Inspired by the passionate love affair between Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, and Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and fertility, comes the story of one firefighter’s desire to settle down with a labor and delivery nurse whose biggest fear is commitment.

This was absolutely beautiful.

Carter and Venus' love story is so raw and so real!

I cried of cause because then it wouldn't be an Ariel Anderson book lol but seriously the ending and when she saw him and she knew she couldn't live without him. I LOST IT!

RIP Trevor. That was hard to read but it shows what kind of person Carter is. and Venus stayed with him through the hurt, through the pain, and through the messy.

Also the ending could not have been more perfect. 100 stars.

Another beautiful story from Ariel Anderson ❤️

Audio:
The book was amazing and the audio is just as amazing! The narrators did a fantastic job bringing this beautiful story to life! I highly highly recommend!

Oh my heart. Ariel N Anderson is a fabulous author, but she certainly likes to tear my heart out and slowly put it back! This may be short, but all the feels come through with every sentence. Carter saw Venus and he was taken. A night of passion, no names revealed, and he knew. But she is broken and has no interest in any connection deeper than sex. One night turns to two, and they start spending and now he knows his first impression was right. She is the one. But have her feelings changed? Anderson took me for an emotional ride, wringing me out in the best way. Tears and smiles make this the best kind of listen.

Amanda Willow is "V" and she is fabulous. Emotionally disconnected, she frustrated me creating her to be exactly as she should be. Nelson Hobbs is Carter, and he brings it. The pain and the passion are portrayed so genuinely, it was easy to understand and fall for him. Loved it!

This is a short, sweet, funny, and steamy read that will pull on your heartstrings. It made me feel everything from sadness, heartbreak, frustration to joy. The well-written characters pulled me in from the start. Vulcan is a swoon-worthy firefighter who falls first and hard. Venus is a labor and delivery nurse who’s emotionally guarded and not looking for anything serious. What begins as a no-strings-attached arrangement soon evolves into something real. Watching Venus and Vulcan's connection grow was super satisfying. I loved the push and pull between them as they worked through their feelings, wants, and needs. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their banter was hilarious. Venus and Vulcan's journey to love was raw, emotional, complicated, and messy. Their story includes some heavy topics, but it is also healing and full of hope.

Narration:
Amanda Willow and Nelson Hobbs performed this audiobook in duet. This story is an emotional ride, and both Amanda and Nelson nailed it. This was my first time listening to these two perform together, and I will absolutely be looking for more of their work. Amanda and Nelson were the perfect voices for Venus and Vulcan, and really brought the characters to life. Their performances elevated my experience with this story, and made it feel real.

Ariel N. Anderson, you broke me….again! This book made me experience every emotion and I was left sobbing too many times because you know how to write tragic love in such a hauntingly beautiful way that it literally changes our hearts and souls ♥️ I love this book so much and would give it infinity stars if I could!

The banter was so good and mixed with the scorching chemistry, led to some great spice! Carter Westwood is now my favorite Firefighter MMC forever! Venus…I wanted to reach into the book and shake some sense into this L&D Nurse or slap her…but she redeemed herself in the end.

This is a shorter book but it didn’t feel like it at all! It gave me everything I want in a love story! I can’t wait to own this in all formats ( because apparently I like to cry🥹🫶🏻).

PS~ thanks for putting the final stamp on pancakes being forever ruined for me😭🥞💔

If you need me I’ll be crying into my pillow💔

This was a very beautiful story. The plot isn't complicated, but it's the canvas for the characters to shine, because the characters are what makes this brilliant.

Carter is wonderful, sweet, loyal and so lovable. He falls first and falls oh, so hard! I loved him instantly, with his big heart and incredible patience. The way he tried to navigate the complicated relationship with Venus was so relatable. There were parts near the end of the story that were heartbreaking. This does end with a HEA, and it's hard-earned. This was my first time listening to Nelson Hobbs, and I enjoyed a lot his performance. He was a wonderful choice for Carter and when the last few chapters came, he left me speechless with his performance.

Venus was mysterious, complex, and so scared of falling in love. She has her reasons , and even though I disagreed with her, the way she was written- I felt her fear, and I understood her reasons why and accepted them. Amanda Willow brought her to life beautifully. She was fantastic! When a character is more guarded with their feelings, often I find it hard to connect with them. The performance has to be really good, to be true to the more reserved character, and somehow still show enough emotions, for me to like it. Amanda did an incredible job with this! The distance that Venus was putting between her and Carter - I felt it. Her falling in love despite not wanting to - I felt that, too. And when Amanda got to show all of the emotions that Venus had been holding back... absolutely brilliant performance.

A very emotional book

Amanda Willow stole the show on this one. She is the reason I finished the audio. I just was not feeling the story which was odd because I loved Under Your Scars (both the book and the audio). I am a lover of all things small town but struggled with this one.

I did really love the character of Carter though!

Not sure what I feel about this one

Amanda Willows and Nelson Hobbs brought this story to life in the best way. The dual narration made Vulcan and Venus’s personalities shine even brighter—his warm, playful tone versus her sharp, cool delivery perfectly matched that golden retriever/black cat energy I adored in the book. The chemistry between the narrators elevated the banter and spice, making it an even more immersive listen. Highly recommend grabbing the audiobook if you want to fall even deeper into their world.

So worth the lack of sleep

I was really excited to listen to Venus after falling in love with Ariel Anderson’s debut book, Under Your Scars. I couldn’t wait to see her take on a small-town romance, especially with a setup featuring a firefighter hero and a labor and delivery nurse heroine. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me.

Carter’s character, while clearly meant to be intense and devoted, came off more obsessive and annoying than sweet and endearing. His fixation on Venus after their one-night stand felt over the top, and their emotional conflict never quite felt believable. It was hard to connect with either of them, and the overall tone and writing style felt so different from Anderson’s earlier work. Honestly, it’s hard to believe this came from the same author who delivered such depth and emotional weight in Under Your Scars. The writing here felt simplistic and unpolished, and the reference to her previous book within this one felt unnecessary and distracting.

That said, the narration was the standout. Amanda Willow brings a fun, sassy energy to Venus, and Nelson Hobbes did a fantastic job as Carter. Both narrators elevated the material and made the story easier to get through.

In the end, Venus just didn’t work for me, but the narration was strong enough to keep me listening.

Missed the Mark

The whole book was just a woman not into a man who is obsessed with her, and for no real reason. No real connection or depth in the book. Last chapter has all the excitement, but this book did nothing for me.

Flat story
