About this listen

Private investigator Atticus Priest is employed by a disgruntled ex-husband to dig up dirt on his estranged wife. But when she goes missing after swimming in the River Avon, Atticus uncovers a conspiracy between five lifelong friends that goes back years.

The friends did something when they were younger that they're not proud of. It's something that would land them in a world of trouble if it ever came to light.

Something they've been trying to bury ever since.

But Atticus finds one secret and then the next. The friends have a lot at stake—what will they do to keep him off the scent, and what will they do if he gets too close to the truth?

Because there's one thing about dirty secrets . . . they're never as buried as you think, and once they've been dug up, they can destroy everything.

I love Aticus Priest and his independent way of investigating the bad guys. The narration makes it even better. Mark Dawson is one of my favorite writers and I'm really looking forward to the next book.

Another winner!

Love this series and LOVE the narrator. Beautifully told. Well crafted mystery and interesting characters . Nothing boring or cookie cutter here.

Another great Atticus story

I am a huge fan of every Mark Dawson book I have read, and I have read many. What I especially liked about this one was all the different storylines seamlessly weaving their own stories and coming together perfectly. It’s a great one!

Thrilling

I loved listening to this book. The story is complex and twisty and Simon Vance's narration is sublime. I absolutely can't see why these novels are so "under the radar" - they are as good as any detective novels I've listened to - and I've heard a few!

The only suggestion I would have is to listen to the four (so far) novels in the proper sequence. All the Devils Are Here makes reference frequently to the previous novel, and of course there are many ongoing characters from the previous stories.

Excellent all around. Can't wait for the next one!

I am a pretty huge fan of Mr. Dawson and I think that I am reading (or have read) every single series that he has out. He currently has about 3 or 4 (or possibly more) series that are current and that he is currently putting books out in. I am invested in each one.

This series- involving Atticus Priest - is so very different from his other series such as the John Milton series. Atticus is a man with some major issues, but he is also an EXTREMELY brilliant detective who sees things that no one else can see. Unfortunately, he lacks any sort of self control and tends to find himself in trouble A LOT because he gets completely invested and blindly single minded in solving a puzzle when on a case and sometimes forgets that there are rules that he has to follow. But it sure is fun watching him figure these things out.

In this case, he (and Mack, and Francine) are dealing with several different cases that do not seem to be related in the beginning, but as the book progresses, we see how all of these roads converge into a single circumstance.

I read a review that said this book was too complicated, but I think that it might have seemed that way because this book in particular REALLY pulled from the history that we have learned as we have followed along from the first three books and Mr. Dawson didn't really take the time to go back and repeat things that we readers already knew. So if you were reading his as a stand-alone, I can see how it might be confusing at times. Personally, I had no issues with it and enjoyed seeing how the many lines ended up being connected.

As always, love the narration - but then again.... I do love the English :)

Atticus does it again

Great performance, love Atticus Priest! And what will happen with Mac and Atticus?
Looking forward to the next in the series!

Fabulous story

First, I love Narration by Simon Vance. Second, Atticus is a quirky detective. Third, Dawson’s plots are engaging.

Worthy Series

I like the way this book tied in (mostly) everything from the earlier books. For me, the storyline was not as streamlined as the first three books. I want a fifth book with these beloved characters, which is seemingly setup in the Epilogue regarding one of the ancillary characters’ secret(s). I hope so, but we shall see.

A decent bow on a great series

Dawson is the best enjoyed him much better than others! The story has the perfect balance of police investigation, romance and intense human interaction!

How all the details are stitched together.

I have tried to like the main character, but I just can't. I know he has issues and is really smart, but I hate how little regard he has for DCI Jones. And , I really hate the way a female officer is treated in this series. The MC shows more love for his dog , than the woman who's life he is wrecking. both her personal and professional life is in shambles for 1 man. I am not sure what this says about her...but it's how the author thinks a woman will behave.
The narrator is one of my favorites and why I listened to the series. If not for him, I would have given up after book one.
This is an okay listen, but difficult if you are a female reader. At almost every turn I kept thinking, what is this woman doing with such a jerk? Still don't have the answer.

Dislikeable MC
