‘If you can’t love me right, then love me wrong.’ My father gave me no choice. Marry his enemy to make peace. His enemy old enough to be my father, and with a penchant for leaving his partners dead.

Escape is my only option.

Using my father’s enforcer to create a diversion works, unfortunately it leaves him with a vendetta against me. Hot on my heels, he tracks me down, determined to take me home to be wed.

What happens when the man you are supposed to marry ends up killing your family and leaving you for dead and the man hired to cover it up kidnaps you?

Well, you try to run, you try to get away... Obviously.

Or you unexpectedly start to connect with him, understand his pain, feel things you only ever dreamed you would feel.

This is my first Effie Campbell and my first with both of these narrators. It was performed wonderfully in duet.

There were a few little things that bugged me but nothing that had anything to do with the main plot of the story. And I loved how both Pheonix and Laura grew to be stronger and better for each other. Obviously there was a lot of spice which did not disappoint.

This was a “short” and spicy book. I say “short” because it was only 304 pages…it felt much longer than that. The only reason it’s 3 stars because the spice was HOT.

I’m not quite sure what the plot truly was besides Esther running from an arranged marriage and Alec who was her family’s enforcer and for a LARGE price he went to go find her. Other than that the in between was just a lot of fluff.

I am obsessed with William Macleod and his growly voice. It truly fits his touch her and die vibes! This was my first audio with Betty Black and I really enjoyed her narration!

Betty Black and William Macleod did amazing! it's truly like listening to a movie. Their voice acting is just that, ACTING. I believe that they are the characters fully. Betty is so engaging, funny and charming. And Will... oowee his voice is HOT. The way he says good girl is panty dropping. The book/storyline itself is also really good! Perfect dark mafia romance. The FMC is no spoiled mafia princess, she's fiesty and has grit. The MMC so earnestly cares for her, it's beyond sweet. But also touch her and lose a finger.. Overall, LOVED. Cannot wait to continue the series!

Dark Escapes, is a standalone and book one in the McGowan Mafia series written by Effie Campbell. We follow Esther McGowan, a mafia princess who is desperately trying to change her destiny. Her father has promised her to an arranged marriage with a horrible monster of a man, Harold Thompson who has long terrorised her family,. Under the guise of being all for the good of the family. Esther wants none of it.

Betty Black plays Esther. Betty, your performance is the standout for me. I was taken by how you delivered Esther’s desperation, grit and determination to escape the man she hated. Esther’s tenacity and fight came to the fore, my favourite part of this story. Oh, and your voices for the supporting female characters are so good, especially the “crazy wonderful old bird Gladys”. Love her.

Having experienced a hardened past, now a dedicated enforcer, Alec has proven time and again his loyalty to the McGowans. Wanting to be accepted by them, he is trusted and tasked with capturing and bringing Esther home for her impending marriage. Alec is torn between his duty to the McGowans and his not so suppressed growing desire for Esther.

William Macleod played the role of Alec and the supporting male characters with a diverse range of strong voices for each. In particular the confrontation with the two families, each character is easily distinguishable.

The pairing of Betty Black and William Macleod performing Effie’s words kept me engaged throughout the entire story. I enjoyed their accents and felt they suited the characters well. The banter between them as hunter and captive is so good too. I did adjust the speed of this audiobook. Usually I am a 1.0x listener, my ears were happier with 1.2x. I feel this did not impact negatively on the story at all.

Thank you Effie Campbell for an enjoyable story. I am hooked and patiently await more in the McGowan Mafia series. Thank you to Blue Nose for this highly entertaining Advanced Listener Copy.

Effie Campbell’s prose is punchy and mood-forward. Short, clipped sentences drive urgency, then stretch into lush, sensory lines for intimacy. She leans on visceral detail—impact sounds, breath, texture—over exposition, which keeps scenes immediate. Dialogue carries much of the characterization; banter is sharp without feeling quippy, and internal monologue is sparing but strategic, letting subtext do work. The tone balances grit and tenderness, with violence described plainly rather than glamorized. Trope beats are familiar, yet framed with a grounded emotional logic; consent cues are explicit in the spicy moments, and Campbell uses praise and power exchange to deepen character rather than just heat. Pacing is kinetic, occasionally lingering a touch long in travel reflection, but the line-level writing remains tight and intentionally rhythmic.

The duet narration is a genuine asset. Betty Black disciplines the emotional range: crisp when Esther is calculating, raw when fear or resolve spikes, and she threads a consistent European accent that marks identity without muddying diction. William Macleod’s performance is measured and low-grained, shifting from restrained control to vulnerable charge in a way that sells the character’s arc. His praise-forward delivery in intimate scenes lands with precision and avoids camp; timing and breath work amplify tension. Chemistry between the two readers feels lived-in—overlaps and micro-pauses make dialogue sound like true exchange rather than alternating solos. Production is clean, levels are even, and scene transitions are easy to track. Together, the performances elevate the text, sharpening both the menace and the tenderness baked into Campbell’s style.

I may feel different if I had read the book. But I listened to the audiobook with Betty Black and William MacLeod narrating. They did a good job of bringing the characters to life. The plot was okay, but the spice was good.

Interesting story to start out a mafia series. Can be standalone but there are some great characters introduced that you will want to hear more from.

This one was just okay, the story just kind of dragged a little bit for me, but it was okay. I really enjoyed the narrators and definitely think they helped me like the story more than I would have just eyeball reading it. I will probably continue the series knowing this was a debut from Effie Campbell.

Now this is how you do a dark mafia romance. We’ve got a mafia princess shoved into an arranged marriage with a complete monster, and instead of playing along she bolts. Enter her father’s top enforcer—the guy who’s supposed to track her down and drag her back. Spoiler: things do not go according to plan. The chase, the tension, the danger… it was the perfect mix of plot and spice.

And the audiobook? Absolute chef’s kiss. Duet narration with Betty Black and William Macleod, and I swear they lived these roles. The emotions, the push and pull, the heat—everything landed exactly the way it should. Plus those accents? Deadly. Like, I was not prepared to be swooning this hard while someone was technically supposed to be hunting her down.

This one hit every single note I want from the genre. Dark, dangerous, a little twisted, and still giving me enough plot that I wasn’t just flipping pages for the next spicy scene. Four stars and definitely worth grabbing, especially if you listen.
