Relationships have always been essential to human survival. Our bodies and brains are programmed to seek out connection, whether familial, romantic, or platonic. And yet, these vital bonds are often at the root of our deepest suffering. While our hearts are primed for compassionate connection, our nervous systems—which store all our past hurts and disappointments—are wired for threat and negativity.

Story
When a parent singles out a child for special privileges and attention, that child is often unaware that the relationship is unhealthy - even incestuous. As adults, these children struggle to feel validated, because while they have not been directly abused, they feel a sense of violation and crossed boundaries - usually done in the name of 'love' and 'caring'. The parent's love feels more confining than freeing, more demanding than giving, more intrusive than nurturing. Yet these children suffer from what psychologist Kenneth Adams calls The Silent Seduction.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Relationship Essential
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is essential reading for anyone in a relationship whether it's going well or not or how new the relationship is. In fact, I believe everyone would benefit from reading this book.
What did you learn from Your Brain on Love that you would use in your daily life?
I thought I was good at relationships but this book and the attachment theory model has broken down all of my old beliefs and I'm now installing new ones. I've had a paradigm shift and my priorities (values, if you will) have been re-organised. I now see that the relationship is paramount, not the individual. Two people together in a secure functioning relationship can achieve much more with their lives than if they were to operate independently. I will apply what I have learned here and with further study I will become a better man and help my partner feel understood and secure in my love.

Everyone should read this book before entering a relationship and before they decide to make it a long term commitment read it together.

So insightful
This was a great read. I only wish I had found it sooner in my last real relationship. I now know what I've done wrong all this time.

Bueno, pero muy general.
Es muy grato ver al autor dando información sobre este tema. Es más bien introductorio para quienes están iniciando está búsqueda relacional.
