Publisher's summary

In 10 Principles for Doing Effective Couples Therapy, two of the world's leading couple researchers and therapists give listeners an inside tour of what goes on inside the consulting rooms of their practice. They have been doing couples work for decades and still find it challenging and full of learning experiences. This book distills the knowledge they've gained over their years of practice into 10 principles at the core of good couples work. Each principle is illustrated with a clinically compiled case plus personal side-notes and storytelling.

Topics addressed include:

  • You know that you need to "treat the relationship," but how are you supposed to get at something as elusive as "a relationship"?
  • How do you empathize with both clients if they have opposite points of view? Later on, if they end up separating does that mean you've failed? Are you only successful if you keep couples together?
  • Compared to an individual client, a relationship is an entirely different animal. What should you do first? What should you look for? What questions should you ask? If clients give different answers, who should you believe?

Contains mature themes.

Excellent

Easy listen. Not too clinical. Humble and helpful to better understand Gottman integration into couples work.

Profoundly accessible and immediately relevant for practice

This book provides theory, case studies and practical interventions. It’s a great addition to any therapist’s library, while also being accessible enough to offer clients as general psycho education.

Excellent book!

I truly enjoyed this book. Having spent about two years working on my own theraputic journey and having tried to seek couples therapy with an ex, I truly appreciate just about everything I heard in this book. I found it to be easy to listen to (despite some emotionally challenging content) because the author seems very genuine, honest, down to earth, humble and has a pleasant sense of humor. I found much of this book and the autgors presence to be relatable. The Gottman's approach seems very respecful. I can't help but wonder what my couples therapy experience would have been like with them and if it would have changed things or the outcome with my ex.

Well narrated

It's a good book on couples counselling.
Informative. It is simple and well narrated. At times the approaches lack the depth and can potentially create a traumatising situation for the abused partner. It doesn't touch on essential topics of power balance and control. Or what is the abusive relationship, and how important is it to acknowledge and support the victims instead of mediating the reconnection first.

Robotic

The book is pretty good overall but the reader seemed so painfully robotic to me it was hard to get through.
