Publisher's summary

“I can unequivocally say that this is the book every man needs.”Mark Groves, human connection specialist and founder of Create The Love

Suck it up. Stuff it down. Pour a bottle of whiskey over the top. Rinse and repeat until sufficiently numbed. This is the step-by-step doctrine men are taught. Men have traded in their internal leadership, sovereignty, and even masculinity for comfort, validation, and an escape from the mundane boardroom of their existence. Where is the modern-day strength training for the hearts and minds of men?

In Men’s Work, ManTalks founder Connor Beaton offers the tactical, self-led guide men have been looking for. Here, he destigmatizes inner work by reframing it as a kind of psychological warrior training that many men can relate to and have been craving. Beaton walks you through a framework for facing the hidden and rejected aspects of yourself—factors that lead to self-sabotage, anxiety, and depression. Through real-life stories from men he’s worked with and guidance in practical, accessible exercises, he takes you on a three-part journey to uncover and free yourself from the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that hold you back.

When you face off with those pieces in place, that’s when you’ll:

  • Live with clear purpose and direction
  • Build your skills to win at relationships
  • Gain better control of your anger
  • Learn how to regulate your mind, body, and emotions, even under stress and conflict
  • Become fearless and at peace with your journey

Men’s Work focuses on the unique challenges that men with psychological and emotional wounds so often grapple with—while giving you the tools to heal and return to society in a way that is both empowering personally and beneficial for all. “The goal of this work is not only to become a better man,” says Beaton, “but a better participant in the collective enterprise of living. True freedom awaits.”

Critic reviews

“Every now and then I come across a book that triggers a voice in my head that proclaims, ‘Damn, I wish I had written this—this is really good.’ My book-envy short list just grew by one more title: Men’s Work. With this watershed book, Connor Beaton accomplishes the Herculean task—advanced by the forefathers of the modern men’s movement: Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Robert Bly—of creating an actionable game plan for alchemizing men’s confusion, anger, and general male stupidity into purpose, healing, and mastery. From the Introduction on, Men’s Work grabbed me by the mind, heart, and balls, and didn’t let go. I am grateful to call Connor a friend, and I am even more grateful for the immeasurable gift he has given men and mankind with this book.”—Dr. Robert Glover, author of No More Mr. Nice Guy

“Having known and worked with Connor throughout his journey, I can unequivocally say that this is the book every man needs. Connor does a beautiful job of inviting and leading us through our pain and back into our hearts. He reminds us that our darkness is to be embraced, not avoided.”—Mark Groves, human connection specialist and founder of Create The Love

“In Men’s Work, Connor Beaton eloquently illuminates the path for men to find deep healing and true freedom in their lives. A heavy burden is placed on men in our culture, and without guidance, they often suffer in silence. Connor is an incredible teacher and true alchemist—taking his own pain, sitting with it, and lovingly pouring the wisdom he gained from his own personal journey into this book so that others do the same. Men’s Work is a hero’s journey that I highly recommend to anyone looking to create a more peaceful, fulfilled life of purpose.”—Dr. Nicole LePera, New York Times bestselling author of How to Do the Work

Explore the Divine Masculine in yourself

I really appreciated his matter of fact approach without it feeling like negative self talk, which i struggle with. It's truly a tool that deserves to be used by any man looking for life long change, or any person seeking to understand the divine masculine. Cuz let's face it, we as a society are so focused on what the toxic masculine is that we don't even really know what is the divine masculine or how to channel it. Especially since it is inside all of us, men and women.

This book is a game changer. It's absolutely the tool that I've been missing for that deep change that I've been after. It has taught me so much about why it is that I operate the way I do. As a man with a lot of pain, it is difficult to open up, but with the format of this book, a lot of the opening up starts with yourself and your journal. I truly feel like if I put in the work, the results will come, and I'm feeling really good about these results so far.

The author makes the topics of this book very approachable. He himself is also very relatable. I have enjoyed deep diving into the depths of my inner being and exploring myself on a deep level.

Thank you so much for this comprehensive book that helped me start on my journey of healing. I hope every man who is ready for healing and change comes across this book.

Should be required reading for every man

A master course in healing yourself as a man disguised as a fun, easy to digest read. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

Very grateful for this book, but be aware

Men’s Work describes the reasons for my struggles with my emotions and negative habits, or coping mechanisms, and offers questions for each chapter which are teaching me to become more aware of them. This is helping me create more space from them so I can more easily respond instead of react. I’ve read many self-help books, this one positively challenges me and is helping me get to know parts of myself and emotions better. Be aware though, if you are unable to show up for yourself, if you are still struggling with unresolved emotions and have not yet learned how to be there for yourself with intense emotions, find support or an IFS therapist first. I spent years looking for ways to be there for myself and my emotions, I found them, and because of that this book is helping me strengthen my ability to show up for myself and my emotional reactions, instead of helplessly living as them. Thank you Connor. I’ll forever go back to it for guidance, knowledge, and insight, and offer it to others.

From a woman’s perspective

I bought this book as I was having difficulty understanding my partner. It is such an eye opener! I truly believe that developing and maintains a healthy relationship does require work and understanding (as we are all so biologically, chemically, and emotionally different). I also forwarded this book to my partner because at times he is so overwhelmed by his job and balancing visitation with his children, I wanted him to be able to have a more grounded and connected experience with life. The best part of this book, for me, was the healthy description of masculinity and the guided practices to help the reader really get involved in addressing some barriers they may not even know existed. Great read, very therapeutic (even if it’s not technically “therapy”).
