Publisher's summary

When a child is hurting, it can be the most painful challenge a parent will face. With compassion and perspective, Dr. Brad Reedy offers hope and wisdom for children who struggle and the parents who love them. The Journey of the Heroic Parent will take you on a journey to a happier, healthier relationship with your struggling child - and yourself. Through lessons learned, mother, father, and child will achieve greater understanding, love, and humanity - no matter what the outcome.

Every day parents face heartbreaking situations. Raising a child struggling with mental health issues, addictions, depression, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders or just the normal angst associated with growing up can be frightening and confusing.

When all you've done is not enough, when your child seems lost and you feel inept and impotent, Dr. Reedy can help you take the necessary steps to find your child, not with cursory cures or snappy solutions, but rather by effecting positive change in your own behavior.

On your journey, you will confront, reevaluate, and grow confident in your beliefs as a parent. You will learn how to lovingly and effectively communicate your intentions to your child.

Reedy's process will teach you how to find peace and security in your skills as a parent, and help you get comfortable exactly where you are. Even if you've made mistakes, even if you think you've failed, you still have the power to be a great parent.

Healthy parenting leads to a healthy life for your whole family, and The Journey of the Heroic Parent will be your guide as you walk the path to hope.

Who's problem is it anyway?

What a fabulous book as a follow up to Anatomy Of Pease. l don't know if l could ever listen to a more intriguing and impactful story than that of Lou's story of redemption. But The Journey of the Heroic Parent is excellent too with a similar theme and message. It too is one of those books that I will listen to again. Amazingly good.

Great book for ANY parent.

While the book focuses on parents of “troubled” children, this book should be required reading for all parents. There are so many things that were pointed out by Dr Reedy that made infinite sense…once he said them. “Yes, of course, that’s obvious” I would think to myself wondering then why I hadn’t realized the obvious before. Building a healthy relationship with your child (or anyone else) is not easy and not fast, but Dr. Reedy provides tools and different perspectives to try in improving your relationships in general.

Loved it! Will read over again and again!

I found this book to be just what I needed! Full of helpful stories and gentle reminders to be more authentic and interested in self-care. Sharing helpful ways to hold boundaries with people around us so we can prioritize our self-care. The author was vulnerable in sharing from his life, and emphasized the importance of taking care of ourselves and our wounded pasts. Letting go of the idea of controlling those around us. Another concept I liked was parenting our children with their needs in mind instead of our own. Brilliant. Will have to read again and again.

10 Stars ****

Life changing! And I don’t use the phrase lightly !
Perspective expanding ....
Not just a parenting book. It caused me to look inside at myself and it had a nurturing feeling alongside educational and informative.
I can easily say it’s the best book I have listened to in a long time . I will be recommending to all my friends, and I feel it’s content is valuable to even non- parents. As it is a book about oneself as an adult and interpersonal relationships, as much as it is about parenting.
The narrator’s voice is effective, and he did a great job .
I had previously listened to the author, Brad Reedy, on his podcast, I was used to hearing his voice, so it took a few minutes to make the shift.
I’m considering purchasing the hard copy book to have as reference, or to share also .
Great book!

One of the Best parenting books we have read!

We have read so many parenting books I can’t keep track of. I thought I knew a lot before reading this book. The in-sight and skills discussed were a fresh idea. Definitely worth the read and will listen to it multiple time to perfect the skills taught.

The parenting book that's changing my life

So many parenting books offer "the" solution. If we just gave more/fewer/different consequences or more/less structure or more/less (fill in the blank) -- if we just did that one thing, then our kid would respond.

This book is different. Disturbingly so, for me, at least at the beginning. The author's view is that only the parent can decide what's right for their kid. We can listen to experts, we can pick up communication skills, but no expert truly knows our kid like we do. At the same time, we need to accept that we have no control over our kids' outcomes. We turned out okay despite the mistakes our parents surely made.

Our job as parents is to first heal ourselves (put your oxygen mask on before assisting others). Then authentically engage with our kids. The idea is scary for any parent of a very troubled kid. The experts can offer pearls of wisdom. But it's only us -- as ill-equipped and untrained as we are -- it's only us as parents who can guide our kids.

I especially appreciate the author's humility. He is a therapist, the owner of a well-regarded wilderness therapy program, a dad and a husband. And he candidly describes the mistakes he's made as a dad and husband along his parenting journey.

This is the single most helpful parenting book I've ever read. I hope it touches you, too.

Thank you!

I am a desperate mom struggling to save her family, her marriage and her son. This book is helping me through one of the most difficult times I've ever been through and hopefully will ever go through. I'm realizing now that it is me I need to save.
