Buried under "You Are What You Eat" headlines is another perspective supported by the latest research: You are, actually, how you move. Move Your DNA explains the science behind our need for natural movement - right down to the cellular level. It examines the differences between the movements in a typical hunter-gatherer's life and the movements in our own. It shows the many problems with using exercise like movement vitamins instead of addressing the deeper issue of a poor movement diet. Best of all, Move Your DNA contains the corrective exercises, habit modifications, and simple lifestyle changes we need to make in order to free ourselves from disease and discover our naturally healthy, reflex driven selves. The "movement is not optional" argument is so convincing, this audiobook was designed to be listed to while walking - each chapter listing the mileage for that section. An average walker will complete 20 miles while listening! From couch potatoes to professional athletes, new parents to seniors, listeners will love Katy's humorous, passionate, and - above all - science-based guide to restoring your body and reclaiming your life.

Bowman is very upbeat in her narration and presents a new way to look at exercise and activity. The explanations of how movement effects our bodies down to the cellular level are fascinating. This book will change the way you think about the dynamics of health, strength and what is considered healthy exercise. Bowman is all about healing chronic physical issues using body mechanics, kinesiology and prescribed movement.
I had read some negative reviews for the recorded book because people found the "exercises" too complicated to understand without pictures. The verbal descriptions being too hard to follow. So I bought a used copy of the paperback book instead of buying the recorded version. Suffice it to say that the physical book just sat on the shelf--not being something that sparked my interest enough to really engage.
Then I went back and checked the reviews here again and found several positive comments about how motivating the audio recording was. So I bought the audible book too. Success! I find having the motivational quality of the author's reading and the physical book with the photos to be the perfect mix.
Be prepared to have everything you thought you knew about exercise and building a strong body turned upside down. Really worth the time. I would suggest starting with the recorded version first and seeing if you need the back up of a print version once you've listened. For me, having both versions has really worked. In hindsight, it might have been enough to have borrowed the print book from the library just until I got the images down and understood the visual concepts. Either way, a highly recommended listen.
This is the right book at the right time. Katy goes quite in depth in information but delivered in an easy to listen to and enjoyable way . I'm listening for my 5th time in 2 weeks and getting more and more evert time.I have had a twisted back and hips for a long time and this is the best re balancing book i have come across. Thank you.
I can find a book to love in any genre -- a beautifully written classic, an interesting mystery or sci-fi, a trashy romance. Bring it!
STORY (health/science) - Consistent with all the interest in the paleo lifestyle, this book compares the movement, or lack thereof, of modern man to that of our ancestors. Ms. Bowman's theory is that our bodies have adapted to a culture of prolonged sitting and that, even when standing or walking, our posture and gait are affected. Further, our one-hour exercise sessions after a day of sitting do not begin to compare with the day-long wanderings of our ancestors and, thus, are grossly inefficient. She also states that though our heart pumps blood, it is basic movement that causes our tiniest capillaries to PULL blood and oxygen from the larger vessels, supplying vital oxygen to our cells and DNA. Thus, in order to supply all our cells, we need to move our body in a variety of ways throughout the day as much as possible.
I'm very glad I listened to the book and gained this information, but it's depressing to try so hard to get in a daily workout only to hear Ms. Bowman say it's nowhere near adequate.
She suggests many exercises that I don't think anyone could possibly do without diagrams of the positions, and it's boring to hear her describe them in such technical terms when you can't visualize what she's talking about. And there's a TON of exercises. You might prefer a printed version of this book.
PERFORMANCE - The author reads her own work and has a young, enthusiastic voice. She does a good job. She also includes recording bloopers at the end, which are fun to listen to.
OVERALL - Ms. Bowman's theory is interesting and makes good sense, but it's somewhat new and controversial. I'm glad I listened to the book and gained the general information, but I don't plan to buy the paper version or do the myriad of exercises.
this is an excellent book about movement. however, I think I need a hard copy to see the subtle therapies described. they are well-defined, but I am more visual.
I have been testing her ideas by stopping running cold turkey for over 6 months. I used Apple Watch to complete the Workout, Exercise and Stand rings everyday. I used to run between 30-50 mi & 4,500'-,7500' of elevation gain/loss every week. Now, I only walk 8-10 miles everyday at 7:30AM, 10AM, Noon, 3PM and after 6PM. I walk about 60-80 mi/week at work without spending extra to work out or go to the gym. It has been great. I feel just as good without running.
I actually bought this book when it was released but didn't make time to read it. Audio was the trick to suck me in & get me moving. I did walk while listening. I found myself creating reasons to go on a walk so I could hear more.
I'm finding lots of little changes to work on every day. I've been slowly changing my DNA via Katy's advice for over a year.
Love Katy's voice. There is so much info, it was good to be able to get it audibly while I walked.
I don't know of any book like it.
KATY... of course!
Yes I did! It was a relief to hear that what I had believed all these years had science behind it.
The information is solid but to get the whole experience you have to get the print version. Pictures!! There are lots of pictures! And they are very helpful. You will use them over and over again as you practice the movements she recommends.
Thanks, this is truly an eye opener for me on my parts and how my everyday movements influence my body in every way. I have already begun my awareness with better walking patterns, squatting movements and moves. Great book!
This is a really fun book to listen, it teaches you about your body and about the human condition. Katie really want's you to walk while you listen and you should, so be prepared.
Our lives are getting away from the true nature of our bodies and we are detaching ourself from our being.
Please read this to become a better human.
I'm thinking of ordering the paper book anyway just to have the images for the exercises, but that's just me.
Walk, squat, MOVE!
Katy's narration is the best I've heard. She brings what could be a dense, scientific (i.e. boring) subject to life with passionate expression and witty humor...all the way to the VERY end!
Definitely an eye-opening book. I was already very much into quality food and the effects of good nutrition on health, but was surprised to learn in this book the detail about movement mechanics and the effects of movement on health all the way to the cellular level.
"Well worth a listen"
A fantastic book to challenge dominant ideas about exercise and movement. Theoretically interesting and practically helpful. Well worth a listen.
"Absolutely fascinating and very inspiring"
Its applicable nature and the amount of information shared.
It does get quite technical. I'm fine with that but it's worth being aware that you will learn a lot about how your body works and a lot of new terms.
"Everyone should read this book"
Fascinating, accessible and impeccably researched; this book should be essential reading for every human. Bowman's premise is that the body needs movement in the same way that it needs food; but that there is a huge difference between exercise (akin to vitamin pills) and natural movement (a wholesome, nutritious and balanced diet). Can't recommend enough!
"Informative and funny! Great book."
My first purchase from Audible and I am thoroughly pleased with the book. It all makes perfect sense as far as modern living (compared to living in captivity) and its effects on health. It's very well narrated by the author, who explains the science behind her findings in fairly simple and easy to understand terms. More so, the book is funny and uses vivid imagery about our own bodies, other animals and nature in general. I found that I would probably have to revisit the chapters where Katy talks about specific exercises to undo the modern living, or have them in print in front of me to be able to follow the instructions and do them correctly. Other that that, it's an absolute gem that will enlighten you about how you can live a life more attuned to what your body is programmed to do to function optimally.
Katy distills a complex topic and makes it absorbable and applicable. I have benefitted by following her advice. This book literally makes me feel good.
"knowledge to reform our time culture & habits."
Loved this. scientific quality information made accessible. Read well by author. Highly recommend for health seekers.
"Brilliant look at the workings of your body"
The top - I've listened to it twice already and will definitely listen again - I've never listened to anything twice before.
It was both informative and entertaining.
I love the author's voice - and I think that the fact that the author is the one reading the book really enhances the experience.
"Genius look at biomechanics"
At the top. Relevant to life, clear narration, upbeat perspective, practical application and hope.
Katy of course.
She manages to pull off funny with serious. Mostly.
It made me want to WALK!
