Publisher's summary

India Ashton has traveled the world with her adventuring father searching for Pagoria, a city so ancient only legend gives it life. After a period of captivity by a band of rebels and the death of her father, she returns to England, only wanting a place to heal and call home. Thomas Hadley, Viscount Ridgewood, or "Ridge" as he is better known, is a restless spirit who longs for adventure. When he comes across the journal of a famed explorer, he believes he has the key to finding the lost city of Pagoria, only he needs India Ashton's help to decipher it. A letter from the father she believed dead forces India to make a difficult decision.

In order to save her father, India must join forces with the viscount, a man she feels too much of a kinship with, and a man she must betray if she is to be successful in her quest. Within the journal lies the unbelievable - proof that the city still lives, a civilization still thrives within its walls, and it has a connection to the viscount he never imagined. Together, India and Ridge unlock the pieces of the puzzle and embark on a journey that will change their lives forever. India's betrayal threatens the growing bond between them, and in the end, India must choose between the man she loves, a city as old as time itself, and the security she craves.

Contains mature themes.

Engaging

The romance was slow, easy, and predictable. Still, the characters made it interesting within the context of the mystery and the narrator was exceptional. The story had a small mystical supernatural component that didn’t kick in until the end. Expanding the mystical influence within the storyline would have lifted the plot providing uniqueness and surprise and less predictability. I recommend the audible book as the narrator adds to the suspense and tension via his emotional range.

The Opposite of Hurry Up & Wait

I have only listened to 3 of Maya Banks books but it seems that so far they all have the same issue... The story is amazingly detailed & really solid... it holds your attention through a little bit of mystery & expectation....the entirety of the story leads you to grand anticipation... However, you have hours of the lead-up which again... is a great journey... but even though the couple always end up together it is... Such a Let Down... all of the outstanding story telling goes flat.... lasts no longer than mere minutes... & then the book ends...total downer...

Rather like...

Being told on Monday that you will be going to the most incredible place for dinner on Friday... you discuss it everyday with your friends causing more & more expectation to build on what you begin to anticipate.... It is finally Friday... you arrive & the place is incredible... just like everyone described but your friends decide to get the food to go... You still get the yummy food & you saw the lovely atmosphere... but now it is over...

Very unrealistic... bleh

There is so much in this book that is just not real... (for you to decide if its true).

India is a bit dense and makes silly decisions. I couldn't get pass this woman. I like to see strong minded smart women in books. She's not it.

The narration is awesome as Tim Campbell really knows how to bring books to life.

At times I was frustrated by the events or decisions that were being made. That's when I lose interest.

To be honest, the next book in this series (Until Midnight) is amazing. I couldn't put it down and when I finished I re-listened to it again. It's that good! ;)

Not Lost Horizon but not bad.

Not bad although India is an idiot. Tim Campbell is great as always. I would love to hear his adaptation of Conway's and the High Lama's discussions in Lost Horizon.

There is some good philosophical talk in Beyond the Night and I loved the references to the fall of Lucifer. Good stuff. But for sheer poetry and elegance of thought...here is my favorite quote from Lost Horizon to show the way!

"The first quarter-century of your life was doubtless lived under the cloud of being too young for things, while the last quarter-century would normally be shadowed by the still darker cloud of being too old for them; and between those two clouds, what small and narrow sunlight illumines a human lifetime!”
